Aqara announced it on October 3, 2024, and its U.S. store currently lists it at $229.99. Its main appeal is the combination of fingerprint unlocking, Apple Home Key, Matter over Thread, PINs, NFC, Bluetooth, and mechanical-key backup.
It is best suited to a compatible single-bore door such as a side entrance, garage entry, home office, basement, or storage room. Before buying, verify the door hardware and understand that Matter does not make every Aqara feature available in every smart-home platform.

What the Aqara U300 is—and is not
The U300 is a smart lever-set lock for common single-bore lever or knob installations. Aqara specifically positions it for doors throughout the home that may not use a front-entry deadbolt, including side doors, garage doors, offices, basements, and storage areas.
Recommended Free Tools
It is not a universal replacement for a standard deadbolt, mortise lock, multipoint lock, or unusual commercial hardware. Aqara lists compatibility with doors measuring 35–55 mm (1⅜–2⅙ inches) thick, but variations in bore geometry, latch design, backset, interior clearance, and existing hardware can still prevent a successful installation. Check the current product specifications and the installation manual before ordering.
#1 Best Overall
- Seamless Apple Home Key Experience: Tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, or use Siri for effortless hands-free access—perfectly integrated with the Apple ecosystem. *Note: Apple Home Key and all Apple features require a Thread-enabled Apple hub (HomePod 2nd Gen / HomePod mini / Apple TV 4K 2021/2022).
- High-Resolution Fingerprint Sensor for Faster, More Accurate Unlocking: Equipped with a 160×160 pixel sensor array—double the size of common 128×96 sensors—U300 captures richer fingerprint details for a truly instant experience. Achieves recognition in under 0.3 seconds with a False Acceptance Rate below 0.0001%, and supports up to 25 stored fingerprints for the whole family.
- Matter Over Thread for Multi-Ecosystem Compatibility: Built with Matter over Thread, the U300 can connect to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy the unique features of each ecosystem. Thread offers faster response, more stable connectivity, lower power consumption, and secure data transmission. Note: A Thread-enabled Matter controller from each ecosystem is required for its respective platform.
- Long-Lasting Power & Secure Design: Runs up to 10 months on just 4 AA alkaline batteries (alkaline required to avoid malfunction or instability). In emergencies, dual USB-C ports provide backup power. All sensitive data—including fingerprints—is stored locally with full AES encryption for enhanced security and peace of mind.
- Smart In-App Controls via Bluetooth: Connect the lock to the Aqara App over Bluetooth to customize your experience—set auto-lock timing to fit your routine and enable Scheduled Quiet Mode for silent operation during nighttime or specific hours.
Black and silver versions are listed, although availability can vary by market. If your door is outside the United States or Canada, confirm regional hardware and cylinder compatibility rather than assuming that the U.S. model will fit.
What Matter over Thread means in practice
Matter is the smart-home interoperability standard. Thread is the low-power wireless network used by the U300 for its smart-home connection. A compatible Matter controller manages the device, while a Thread border router connects the Thread network with the rest of your home network.
The U300’s listed wireless protocols are Thread, Bluetooth, and NFC; Wi-Fi is not its primary connection. Thread can be useful for a battery-powered lock, but it is not self-sufficient. A Thread radio in the lock does not replace the controller or border router needed for ecosystem integration, remote access, and automations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAqara claims up to 10 months of battery life when unlocking by fingerprint 10 times per day. That is a manufacturer estimate under a stated usage pattern, not an independently tested runtime. Temperature, door alignment, connection conditions, auto-lock behavior, usage frequency, and failed fingerprint attempts can all affect actual battery life.
Does the U300 require an Aqara hub?
Not necessarily for basic local operation—but advanced and remote features do require the right infrastructure.
- Basic Aqara Home use: Aqara says the lock can be used locally through Bluetooth without an Aqara hub.
- Remote Aqara control and automations: Aqara recommends an M3, M100, or G5 Pro hub for expanded Aqara functionality.
- Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant: You need a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. The exact hardware depends on the platform.
So “hub-free” is too broad a description. The accurate version is: the U300 can support basic local operation without an Aqara hub, while remote control, automations, and full Matter-over-Thread integration require suitable controller and Thread infrastructure.
Unlocking methods and everyday features
The U300 offers several ways to enter, giving it useful fallbacks when a phone or smart-home network is unavailable:
Rank #2
- True Hands-Free Unlocking with UWB Technology: Experience a new era of smart access — UWB (Ultra-Wideband) detects your incoming presence, direction, and intent to unlock automatically as you approach. It provides a faster, more convenient, and highly secure way to enter your home without touching the lock. Perfect when your hands are full, you're wearing gloves, or arriving in the rain. (Note: UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and is supported on Apple Watch Series 6 or later (excluding SE) running watchOS 11.5+ and iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE & iPhone 16e) running iOS 18.5+.)
- All-in-One Unlocking Options: Enjoy Apple home key tap-to-unlock (requires an Apple Thread-enabled Matter controller: HomePod 2nd Gen, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K 2021/2022), plus fingerprint, touchscreen passcode, voice assistant control, app remote access, NFC card support (card sold separately), and a physical key, giving you flexible, reliable ways to enter your home in any situation.
- Matter Over Thread for Multi-Ecosystem Compatibility: Built with Matter over Thread, the U400 can connect to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy the unique features of each ecosystem. Thread offers faster response, more stable connectivity, lower power consumption, and secure data transmission. Note: A Thread-enabled Matter controller from each ecosystem is required for its respective platform.
- Convenient Rechargeable Power System: Powered by a rechargeable and removable lithium battery that lasts up to 6 months per charge. Use the lock's USB-C port to recharge without taking the lock offline, or remove the battery and charge it separately. A low-battery voice alert will notify you when the battery drops below 20%, ensuring you never get caught off guard.
- Certified Security & Outdoor Durability: BHMA-certified for proven protection, mechanical strength, and long-term reliability. The IP65-rated exterior guards against dust and water for dependable outdoor performance. Plus, the rekeyable design allows you to change the physical key without replacing the entire lock cylinder.
- Fingerprint recognition built into the handle.
- Permanent PIN codes.
- One-time, temporary, or periodic passwords.
- Apple Home Key using a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Aqara Home or Bluetooth control.
- NFC cards.
- Mechanical keys.
- Matter-platform control and supported automations.
Aqara lists capacity for up to 75 codes, up to 10 NFC records, and up to 10 Matter users. Its fingerprint capacity needs more caution: marketing copy has claimed up to 50 fingerprints, while the specifications section has shown 25. Because Aqara’s current pages conflict, verify the capacity for your regional model or firmware rather than treating either figure as definitive.
Aqara also publishes a fingerprint sensor specification and a false-acceptance rate below 0.0001 percent. These are manufacturer claims, not independent laboratory security results, and they should not be read as proof that the U300 is categorically more secure than competing locks.
Apple Home Key
Apple Home Key lets a user tap a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch at the lock. It is one of the U300’s strongest reasons to buy, particularly for Apple households that need a lever lock rather than a deadbolt.
Home Key is not the same as ordinary Bluetooth proximity unlocking. For Apple Home integration, Home Key workflows, and dependable remote access, Aqara says a compatible Apple Matter controller and Thread border router are required. Aqara’s manual recommends current iOS or iPadOS software and lists Apple Home hubs such as a HomePod mini, second-generation HomePod, or third-generation Apple TV 4K with Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

Apple’s Thread support documentation lists compatible Thread-capable Apple devices and explains why Home users may see messages such as “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network.” A phone discovering the lock locally does not prove that remote Thread/Matter operation is configured correctly.
Passage mode and auto-lock
The U300 supports auto-lock and passage mode. Passage mode can be useful for parties, offices, or high-traffic side entrances, but it deliberately leaves the door unlocked. Aqara says it can be enabled or disabled directly on the lock; for safety reasons, it cannot be enabled remotely in the mobile app, although it can be deactivated remotely.
Use passage mode deliberately and disable it after temporary high-traffic use. It should not be treated as a security setting.

Platform compatibility: Matter is not feature parity
Aqara lists support for Aqara Home, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, IFTTT, Home Assistant, and Matter. That does not mean every platform exposes the same controls, user management, logs, automations, or password features. Aqara says third-party Matter ecosystems provide basic functionality, while Aqara Home offers additional settings and features.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Platform | What to expect | Infrastructure |
|---|---|---|
| Aqara Home | Local Bluetooth operation plus the broadest Aqara feature set | No hub for basic local use; M3, M100, or G5 Pro recommended for remote control and automations |
| Apple Home | Basic Matter lock control and Apple Home Key | Compatible Apple home hub and Thread network for remote use and Home Key workflows |
| Alexa | Matter lock control where supported by the Alexa implementation | Compatible Matter controller and Thread border router |
| Google Home | Matter lock control where supported by Google’s implementation | Compatible Matter controller and Thread border router |

| Home Assistant | Matter integration and basic controls, with feature coverage dependent on the current integration | Matter/Thread hardware and a current Home Assistant setup |
| IFTTT | Listed by Aqara, but automation paths depend on the Aqara service and supported triggers | Verify the specific recipe and account requirements |
If a particular Aqara feature is essential—such as temporary passwords, a specialized automation, or detailed management—plan to use Aqara Home even if the lock is also shared with another Matter platform.
Setup and Matter-pairing process
A practical setup sequence, based on Aqara’s manual, is:
- Install the lock and four included AA batteries.
- Power on and initialize the U300.
- Install or open Aqara Home, enable Bluetooth, and keep the phone close to the lock.
- Add the U300 to Aqara Home.
- Update the lock’s firmware before attempting third-party Matter pairing.
- To add it to another Matter ecosystem, press the lock’s Set button and scan the Matter QR code or enter the setup code in the target app.
- For additional ecosystems, use the sharing or commissioning process from the ecosystem where the lock is already bound.
Matter pairing can be stateful. Aqara says that after the first ecosystem is bound, the original Matter QR code may become invalid. If pairing fails after removing the lock, reset the Matter credentials or reset the lock as directed by the manual, then try again. Avoid repeatedly entering an old code and assuming the problem is necessarily a Thread signal issue.
For Apple Home, also check that the home hub is updated, the Thread border router is online, and the lock firmware is current. If Apple reports that a Thread border router is required, adding the lock over Bluetooth alone will not resolve the underlying infrastructure problem.

Door and installation checklist
Before purchasing, confirm all of the following:
- Your door uses a compatible single-bore lever or knob arrangement.
- The door thickness is between 35 and 55 mm.
- The latch, backset, bore, and strike geometry match the U300’s requirements.
- The handle orientation and interior clearance work with the replacement hardware.
- The door already closes and latches smoothly before the motorized lock is installed.
- The lock will not be exposed to conditions beyond its ratings.
- You are permitted to replace the hardware if you rent or manage a commercial property.
A motorized lock cannot compensate for a sagging door, misaligned strike, excessive friction, or a latch that does not fully extend. Correct those mechanical problems first; otherwise, battery life and reliability may suffer.

The U300 uses four AA batteries and includes two mechanical keys. It also has USB-C emergency power ports. Keep a mechanical key accessible outside the locked area and store a suitable USB-C power source where it can be used during a battery failure. Do not rely on remote unlocking if the batteries, home internet, Thread network, or controller are unavailable.

(Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.)
- 【Auto Lock & Do Not Disturb Mode】Thanks to the built-in gyroscope, the auto-lock feature locks the door for you after you close it. Alternatively, you can disable this feature and leave the door in the passage mode. Also, the Do Not Disturb mode can mute the door lock sounds within a certain period of time, to avoid affecting your family’s sleep when you get back home late.
- 【A Durable and Secure Deadbolt Lock with Long Battery Life】 The U50 is powered by 4 AA Batteries (6V batteries required, included) and has a long battery life of up to 6 months. Also, a USB-C to A port for emergency charging is available. The lock body made of zinc alloy has an IPX5 rating and complies with the same safety standard as BHMA Level 3. It’s capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -31°F to 150.8°F. Your sensitive data is stored locally and fully AES encrypted.
The lock supports local credentials and temporary or offline passwords, which can help when guests need access without a live remote connection. However, local unlocking and remote smart-home control are different functions.
Aqara rates the outer panel IPX4, meaning protection from water splashes. That does not make it waterproof or suitable for pressure-washing, standing water, direct spray, or every exposed gate or exterior location. Aqara lists an outer-panel operating range of −30°C to 55°C (−22°F to 131°F) and an inner-panel range of −10°C to 55°C (14°F to 131°F), with operating humidity of 0–93 percent without condensation.
Security and logging limitations
The U300 gives you multiple fallback methods, but redundancy is not the same as complete event auditing. Aqara’s manual says the lock does not generate a status log when the door is opened with the interior handle or a mechanical key. If you need a complete entry-and-exit audit trail, this limitation matters.
Also distinguish local credentials from cloud access. A fingerprint, PIN, NFC card, or key may work at the door even when remote app control is unavailable. Conversely, remote commands and automations depend on the relevant hub, controller, network, and platform integration.
Price and alternatives by installation type
Aqara’s U.S. product page currently lists the U300 at $229.99. Availability and pricing can change, so check the official product page before purchasing.
The most relevant alternatives are not necessarily direct feature-for-feature competitors:
- Schlage Encode Plus: Consider it if you need a deadbolt-oriented lock and Apple Home compatibility. It is not a lever-form-factor substitute. See Schlage’s official site.
- Yale Assure Lock 2 or Assure Lock 2 Touch: Relevant for buyers comparing keypad and biometric options, but verify whether the selected model fits a deadbolt or lever installation. See Yale Home.
- Level Lock+: Better for buyers who prioritize a minimalist exterior and Apple Home integration rather than an integrated fingerprint handle. See Level.
- Aqara U100: A possible Aqara alternative for deadbolt-style doors, not a direct replacement for the U300’s lever format. See Aqara’s official store.
Should you buy the Aqara U300?
Buy it if you need a smart lever lock, your single-bore door is compatible, and you value fingerprint access, Apple Home Key, and multiple local fallback methods. It is especially compelling for Apple households, Aqara users, side doors, garages, offices, and other locations where a deadbolt lock is the wrong hardware format.
Be cautious if you need a standard deadbolt replacement, want every feature to work identically in every Matter platform, dislike maintaining a hub or Thread infrastructure, require independently tested biometric and battery claims, or plan to install the lock in a heavily exposed location.
