What the Aqara Hub M3 does
The Hub M3 is Aqara’s high-end smart-home controller. It combines several roles in one device:
- Aqara Zigbee hub
- Thread Border Router
- Matter Controller
- Matter Bridge
- Bluetooth connectivity
- Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi
- Ethernet connectivity through PoE
- 360-degree infrared blaster
- Local automation processing and storage
- Built-in speaker and siren
It is designed for households that already use Aqara accessories, want to add selected Matter products, or need Aqara devices to appear in several smart-home ecosystems.
Matter Controller versus Matter Bridge
The two Matter functions are different, and confusing them can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Matter Controller
As a Matter Controller, the M3 can add selected third-party Matter devices to the Aqara Home app. Those devices can then participate in compatible Aqara automations.
This does not mean every Matter product is supported. Compatibility depends on the device category, brand, firmware, Aqara Home support and regional software availability.
Matter Bridge
As a Matter Bridge, the M3 can expose selected Aqara Zigbee accessories and some IR-controlled devices to other Matter ecosystems. Aqara identifies support for Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings; Aqara documentation also identifies compatible support for Home Assistant and Homey.
A bridged device may appear as a more generic Matter device and may expose only some of its original features. A sensor, switch, camera or IR appliance will not necessarily retain every Aqara-specific function in another platform. Check Aqara’s current Matter-supported device information before buying for a particular accessory.

PoE and power-adapter detail
PoE is useful when the hub is being installed near a network cable or in a location where a conventional power outlet is inconvenient. It can receive power and network connectivity through compatible Ethernet infrastructure.
For standard power, the US listing says the box includes the Hub M3, a user manual, a USB-A-to-USB-C cable, screws, anchors and a mounting bracket. It separately warns that a 2A USB power adapter is not included. Buyers using USB power will need a compatible adapter; buyers using PoE need suitable network equipment.
Local automation: useful, but not completely offline
Aqara says the M3 moves many automations from cloud processing to local edge processing. Supported automations can respond more quickly and may continue operating during an internet or cloud-service outage.
That does not make the entire smart-home system independent of the internet. Aqara identifies functions that can still require cloud services, including:
- Push notifications
- Location services
- Geofencing
- Local weather conditions
- Sunrise and sunset data
- Some remote-access and cloud-linked functions
The practical benefit is better local resilience for supported automations—not a guarantee that every feature will work without internet access.
Infrared control for air conditioners and TVs
The M3 has a 360-degree infrared system for compatible devices such as air conditioners, air-to-air heat pumps and televisions. Aqara says it can detect use of a traditional IR remote and update the device status in Aqara Home.
An IR-controlled air conditioner can also be exposed to Matter in certain configurations, including when paired with an Aqara temperature and humidity sensor. The US listing limits this to one AC device exposed to Matter.
IR is not the same as native two-way integration. The M3 sends learned commands rather than communicating with the appliance through a full smart-device protocol. The available controls therefore depend on the appliance, Aqara’s IR command library and the Matter platform receiving the device.
Supported smart-home ecosystems
The M3 can be used with Aqara Home, Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings for supported device types and functions. Aqara’s developer documentation also identifies Matter bridging support for Home Assistant and Homey.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can it replace an older Aqara hub?
The M3 can become the lead hub in an Aqara installation and supports group migration from older Aqara hubs. That makes it a potential upgrade for users of the M2, M1S, E1, G2H or G3.
Migration is not necessarily a universal one-click replacement. Aqara devices may remain available in Aqara Home, while devices previously shared through HomeKit or Matter may need to be re-added or reconfigured. Not every Aqara Zigbee accessory can be bridged to Matter.
Before migrating:
- Write down existing automations and scenes.
- Record which devices are shared with HomeKit or other Matter platforms.
- Check Aqara’s current supported-device list.
- Keep the old hub available until the new setup is working.
- Expect some platform-specific reconfiguration.
Owners of the original Aqara Hub or Camera Hub G2H should not assume that a firmware update gives those products the M3’s edge-automation and migration capabilities.

Who should buy the Hub M3?
The M3 is a strong fit if you:
- Already have a substantial Aqara Zigbee installation.
- Want Aqara Home automations involving selected third-party Matter devices.
- Want selected Aqara devices available in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant or Homey.
- Need PoE or flexible wired-network placement.
- Want IR control for an air conditioner, heat pump or TV.
- Prefer a hub without a camera or microphone.
- Value local automation and Aqara’s encrypted local-storage claims.
Who should skip it?
The M3 is harder to justify if you:
- Only need a basic Matter Controller or Thread Border Router.
- Do not own Aqara devices and do not plan to use Aqara Home.
- Expect every Aqara Zigbee product to appear in Matter.
- Need identical features across every smart-home ecosystem.
- Already own a suitable Matter Controller and Thread Border Router.
- Want the lowest-cost Aqara entry point.
- Need every notification, geofence and remote function to work during an internet outage.
M3 versus the cheaper Aqara M100
Aqara’s US store lists the newer Hub M100 at $29.99. It is positioned as a lower-cost Matter hub with Zigbee and Thread support, a Thread Border Router, Wi-Fi 6, WPA3 and USB-A power.
The M3 costs considerably more because it adds features such as PoE, dual-band Wi-Fi, IR control and higher-end local and edge capabilities. The M100 may be the better choice for a new or budget-conscious Matter household that does not need those features.
If you already have a capable Matter controller—such as a compatible Apple HomePod mini, HomePod, Apple TV 4K, Amazon Echo or Google/Nest hub—you may not need the M3 as a general Matter controller. The M3 remains relevant if you specifically need Aqara Zigbee bridging, Aqara Home automations, IR control or PoE.
Bottom line
The Aqara Hub M3 is available now at an official US price of $159.99, but its launch was in 2024, not 2026. It is a powerful all-in-one hub for established Aqara households and advanced multi-platform setups, particularly where PoE, IR control, local automation or Aqara-to-Matter bridging matter.
