Apple’s First Smart Display Was Expected in 2025. What the “homeOS” Rumors Say Now

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s first smart display did not arrive in 2025, despite a September 2024 report that it could launch “as soon as next year.” That forecast meant 2025. Later reporting pushed the rumored device’s timing into 2026 or possibly early 2027, but Apple has not announced the product, its name, or a release date. The software name “homeOS” is also unconfirmed.

What the original report said

On September 30, 2024, Thurrott summarized Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman’s report that Apple was developing a low-end smart display for the home. The phrase “as soon as next year” referred to 2025, and the proposed platform was called “homeOS.” These were reported plans, not an Apple announcement. Thurrott’s September 2024 report

The device was described as an iPad-like screen for controlling the home and accessing Apple services. Reported uses included Home controls, Calendar, Notes, and Siri, with Apple Intelligence positioned as part of the product’s appeal. Prototypes were said to attach magnetically to a wall or sit on a desk, potentially making the screen repositionable around the home. None of those details has been confirmed by Apple.

What “homeOS” is—and is not

In the original reporting, homeOS was described as a proposed platform based on tvOS, the software used by Apple TV. Later reporting characterized the rumored system as drawing on tvOS, iOS, and watchOS interface ideas. That remains a description of an unannounced project, not a published Apple specification. Apple has used the term in reporting and job-listing contexts, but there is no public Apple product page, developer SDK, or user guide establishing homeOS as a shipping operating system. It may be an internal project name; a finished product could use a different software name or a tvOS-based variant. “HomePad” is likewise a name used in rumor coverage, not a confirmed product name.

Two rumored devices, not one confirmed product

Coverage has described a simpler home hub and a more ambitious tabletop concept as separate products. Their reported characteristics should not be combined into a single set of expected specifications.

Rumored concept What reporting has described What Apple has confirmed
Lower-cost smart-home hub A roughly 6- to 7-inch display, built-in speaker, home controls, and possible Apple Intelligence features. Later reports also mentioned an A18 chip and household personalization or facial recognition. These details are unconfirmed. MacRumors, July 2025; MacRumors, August 2025 No product, size, chip, camera, or feature set has been announced.
Higher-end tabletop device The 2024 report described a larger display on a robotic or articulated arm, potentially priced at $1,000 or more, and arriving after the simpler device. That price and design are reported possibilities, not confirmed specifications. Thurrott’s September 2024 report No such device, price, or schedule has been announced.

The lower-cost hub was reportedly intended to come first, with the more elaborate tabletop product following later. Rumor coverage does not establish whether both concepts remain in development.

Why the reported schedule slipped

Later reports attributed the postponement to delays in the more capable Siri and Apple Intelligence features intended to distinguish the hub. The product’s appeal appears tied to software that can respond more usefully to requests and personalize information for people in the household; shipping a screen and speaker without that experience could make it less compelling. Apple has not confirmed that explanation or said the hardware is finished. Tom’s Guide, March 2026

MacRumors reported a move toward 2026, while Tom’s Guide later covered another delay tied to Siri struggles. August 2026 coverage still treated homeOS and the device as rumors, with expectations ranging from late 2026 to early 2027. Those are reported windows, not a launch commitment. T3, August 2026

What the display could add to an Apple home

The likely proposition is not simply “an iPad on a stand.” A fixed screen in a kitchen, hallway, or bedroom could make scenes, lights, locks, cameras, thermostats, and sensors visible without first finding a phone. The reported mix of Home controls and personal information could also make it useful as a household calendar, notes surface, timer, alarm, music controller, or communication device.

Those are plausible uses drawn from the reported direction, not a confirmed feature list. Whether it supports video calls, ordinary iPad apps, camera viewing, or particular accessories remains unknown. A dedicated display might offer a shared, always-available interface and avoid tying up a personal tablet, while an iPad would remain more portable and flexible.

Apple Intelligence is both the proposed differentiator and the reported schedule risk. Reports have linked the hub to a newer Apple-designed chip and personalized responses, but Apple has not confirmed which AI features it would run. Availability of Apple Intelligence features can depend on supported hardware, software, language, region, and account settings; no one should assume every feature will be available on this rumored product at launch.

What Apple Home already supports

Apple already provides a smart-home interface through the Home app, and its public documentation identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs. Those devices can support remote access and automations when configured as a home hub. A screen-equipped product would therefore be a potential visual control point and Siri endpoint, not automatically a replacement for the existing hub hardware. Apple Home; Apple Support: Set up your home hub

Apple also supports Matter, the smart-home standard intended to let compatible accessories work across ecosystems. Matter support does not guarantee that every accessory exposes every feature in every system. A display alone would not automatically be a home hub, Matter controller, or Thread border router; Apple has not specified what radios or hub functions the rumored device might include. Should you wait, or use something available now?

  • Wait for Apple’s announcement if a fixed visual interface for an Apple Home household is specifically what you want and you can live with an uncertain schedule and first-generation unknowns.
  • Use an iPad now if you need a screen for Home controls, recipes, browsing, calls, or general apps. It is more versatile, but a stand or wall mount, power arrangement, and charging or battery management are up to you.
  • Consider HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K if your immediate need is an Apple home hub rather than a touchscreen. HomePod mini adds a compact Siri speaker; Apple TV 4K combines hub functions with a streaming box. Neither provides the rumored always-on visual panel.
  • Compare established smart displays if you need a screen immediately and are open to Google or Amazon ecosystems. Their fit depends on the services and smart-home devices your household already uses.

Before buying anything for a particular accessory, check its compatibility with the Apple Home features you need. Remote access and automations may still depend on a compatible home hub, and a wall-mounted tablet or display needs convenient power and a suitable location.

What remains unknown

  • The final product and operating-system names
  • Price, exact display size, camera, chip, battery or power arrangement, and mounting options
  • Whether it will run ordinary iPad apps or work independently of an iPhone
  • Whether it will include a Matter controller, Thread border router, or other specific radios
  • Which Apple Intelligence and Siri features will be available, and where
  • Launch date, regional availability, and how the device will work with older accessories

Until Apple announces a product, these remain open questions rather than missing details in a confirmed specification sheet.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
