How to Remove Snow From a Roof Safely Without Climbing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not climb onto an icy or snow-covered roof to clear it. If the roof is suitable and there are no signs of structural trouble, use a long-handled, non-metallic roof snow rake from a stable position on the ground, keeping clear of the area where snow or ice could fall. For large ice dams, leaks, suspected overload, steep or complicated roofs, or any job that requires roof access, call a qualified professional.

Why climbing a snowy roof is dangerous

Snow and ice make footing unpredictable, and a snow-covered roof can conceal skylights. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration warns that a worker may fall on the roof, off it, or through a skylight, with falls often fatal. Read OSHA’s hazard alert on working safely in winter weather.

Falling snow, ice, and icicles are hazards below the roof, too. Before doing any work, keep people, pets, vehicles, and equipment out of the area where material could slide or drop.

Assess the roof from the ground first

Look for signs that the problem may be structural or already causing damage. Do not attempt homeowner snow removal if you see sagging, cracked walls, hear unusual sounds, find water entering the building, or suspect a heavy drift or overload. Keep people out of affected areas and contact emergency services or a qualified building professional if the structure appears distressed.

Use a roof snow rake only when conditions suit it

A long-handled roof snow rake lets you pull snow down while standing on the ground. The National Weather Service recommends this ground-based approach; FEMA specifies a long-handled, non-metallic rake where appropriate. A rake reduces the need to access the roof, but it does not make every roof or situation safe.

  1. Choose a suitable pitched roof and a rake intended for roof snow removal. Follow the tool maker’s instructions and limits.
  2. Position yourself on stable ground, outside the path where snow or ice could slide. Do not stand directly below the section you are clearing.
  3. Pull down small amounts at a time rather than trying to remove a large mass in one pass.
  4. Keep people, pets, vehicles, and equipment out of the drop zone, and stop if you encounter ice, an obstruction, unsafe reach, or any sign of roof distress.

Do not use a rake if the roof layout, slope, access to the ground, falling-snow path, skylights, or nearby electrical hazards make the task unsafe. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice, an open flame to melt it, or improvised mechanical equipment.

When to call a qualified professional

FEMA cautions that snow removal is dangerous and should be done only by qualified individuals following safety protocols. Contact a qualified roofing or snow-removal professional for a large or persistent ice dam, a leak, suspected excess structural load, a steep or complex roof, or any work that requires someone to get onto the roof. Roof-entry work calls for appropriate training and fall protection; do not try to solve an unsafe-access problem by climbing.

If you suspect structural distress, prioritize keeping people away from the affected area and getting a qualified assessment rather than trying to remove snow yourself.

Why snow and ice dams build up

Heavy snow can melt during the day and refreeze overnight. Repeated melt-and-refreeze cycles can form ice dams; water may then back up under shingles and damage ceilings, walls, contents, insulation, and roof components. Warm air escaping into the attic is a common contributor because it can heat the roof deck unevenly.

Reduce the chance of repeat buildup

  • Before winter, clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts so drainage paths remain open.
  • Ask a reputable contractor to review attic insulation, air sealing, and ventilation to limit heat escaping into the attic.
  • The National Weather Service notes that R-30 insulation is commonly advised and R-38 is preferable in colder climates; these are not universal code requirements. The right specification depends on local conditions and building design.

These measures can help address conditions that contribute to recurring melt and refreezing, but they do not replace safe snow removal or assessment of an existing leak, ice dam, or suspected overload.
