As of August 18, 2026, there is no verified launch date, price, or product listing. Bloomberg reported the project in December 2024; Apple’s current option is to use supported third-party cameras and doorbells with Apple Home.
What did Bloomberg report?
On December 22, 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was exploring a doorbell-and-lock system that could compete with Amazon Ring. The reported concept would scan a visitor’s face, recognize an authorized resident, and potentially communicate with a compatible smart lock to unlock the door. These are reported possibilities, not confirmed product functions or specifications. Bloomberg’s report said a launch could come in 2026 at the earliest.

That timing is an old reported target, not evidence of a launch or a current schedule. Apple has not publicly announced the doorbell.
Is it actually Apple Face ID?
That has not been established. Bloomberg described advanced facial recognition; it did not confirm that a doorbell would use the same TrueDepth hardware, security architecture, or software as Face ID on an iPhone. Calling it a “Face ID doorbell” can therefore imply more than the reporting supports. “Rumored facial-recognition doorbell” is more precise.

Apple already offers a different feature in its Home app: Face Recognition can identify familiar people in video from supported HomeKit Secure Video cameras and doorbells. That helps label or notify users about people at the door; it is not evidence that a camera is authenticating someone to unlock a physical door. See Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video guidance and its Face Recognition setup information.

| Question | What is established as of August 18, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Has Apple announced a doorbell? | No verified public announcement. |
| Can consumers buy it? | No verified Apple retail listing or public ordering information. |
| Was the concept reported? | Yes. Bloomberg reported Apple was exploring it on December 22, 2024. |
| What launch timing was reported? | 2026 at the earliest, in the 2024 report; this is not a confirmed release window. |

There is also no verified price, exact release date, installation method, battery life, lock compatibility list, or requirement for an Apple home hub. Apple has not confirmed whether recognition would run locally or in the cloud, or whether any unlock would be automatic, require user confirmation, or depend on another device. The reported functions and timing come from Bloomberg’s account, not an Apple product announcement.

What Apple Home users can do now
Apple Home supports compatible third-party smart-home accessories, including cameras and doorbells. With a supported HomeKit Secure Video camera or doorbell, users can configure familiar-face recognition and receive notifications about recognized people. Doorbell video can also be viewed on Apple devices, including Apple TV, when the accessory and setup support that feature. Apple explains HomeKit Secure Video and Face Recognition; its Apple Home documentation covers the platform and accessory ecosystem.
Apple’s developer documentation includes a HomeKit doorbell service alongside separate services for doors and locks. That shows the platform can represent these accessory types; it does not mean Apple sells a doorbell or that every camera works with every lock. Apple’s doorbell service documentation is a technical reference, not a compatibility promise for the rumored product.

Do other Apple home-product reports confirm this doorbell?
No. Later reporting describes a broader Apple smart-home effort, including a small security sensor or camera project and a larger push involving Siri AI and home devices. Those reports offer context, but they do not establish that this particular doorbell is still active, in production, or due to ship. See MacRumors’ March 2026 report and Bloomberg Law’s July 2026 report.

What would matter if face recognition controlled a lock?
Identifying a familiar person in a clip and authorizing entry are different jobs. A mistaken notification label is inconvenient; a false match that opens a door has physical-security consequences. If Apple ever announces such a system, the relevant details will be how it resists spoofing by photos or video, handles poor lighting and look-alikes, and separates recognition from permission to unlock.
- Authentication: Would recognition alone authorize entry, or would the system require a second factor, proximity check, or confirmation? Could automatic unlocking be disabled?
- Access control: Could household members revoke someone’s access immediately, and would unlock events be logged?
- Privacy: Would face data stay on the device? Would video be uploaded or retained, and who in a household could see names linked to faces? Apple’s existing familiar-face documentation does not answer how a future access-control product would handle biometric data.
- Failure and emergency access: What would happen during a network or power outage? Would a manual key or other independent entry method remain available?
- Installation: Wiring or battery needs, Wi-Fi coverage, weather exposure, lock type, rental restrictions, and local building requirements would affect whether a system could be installed at a given entrance.
Should you wait for an Apple doorbell?
Wait if first-party Apple hardware is essential
If you have no immediate need and specifically want an Apple-made doorbell with face-based access control, waiting for an official announcement is an option. There is no confirmed date to plan around, so treat waiting as an open-ended choice rather than a near-term purchase plan.

Choose a supported third-party option if you need a doorbell now
Apple Home users can assess currently available compatible cameras and doorbells. Verify the exact model’s HomeKit Secure Video support, familiar-face features, wiring or battery requirements, recording and subscription terms, regional availability, and manufacturer support before buying. A compatible camera does not imply that it can unlock a door.
Keep surveillance and entry systems separate if that suits your needs
A camera doorbell for alerts and a separately managed lock can avoid making facial recognition the sole gatekeeper for entry. This may be preferable for households that want video monitoring but are not comfortable with automatic unlocking.
