Anglers may use only designated pedestrian access areas, must obey signs, barriers and hatchery staff, and should use extreme caution on the river near new diversion structures.
What reopened—and what did not
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) reopened the nearby Naselle River section to salmon retention on October 16, 2026. The reopening applies to fishing access; it does not mean the hatchery grounds are open for unrestricted public use. Renovation work continues through the fishing season, and construction boundaries remain in effect.

WDFW intends to keep this hatchery access point available while work proceeds. Signs are posted to organize parking and river access, but the location of restricted areas can change as crews, equipment and project phases move. Treat the conditions you find on arrival as controlling, even if you have visited previously.

Use only marked pedestrian routes
Enter and leave through designated pedestrian access areas. Do not cross fencing, barriers, equipment routes or any other marked construction boundary to reach a preferred casting spot. Follow posted signs and instructions from hatchery employees, including temporary changes made during a work shift.

Check the site before unloading
- Read all signs at the parking and river-access points before unloading gear.
- Park only where signs indicate; keep drive lanes, gates and contractor access clear.
- Stay outside areas marked as closed, even when no workers are visible.
- Keep children, dogs and fishing equipment within the permitted pedestrian area.
- Recheck signs when returning from the river because boundaries may change during the season.
WDFW Coastal Region hatchery operations manager John Larson said: “For everyone’s safety, the public must remain outside all construction areas and stay within designated pedestrian access areas. Failure to comply with construction boundaries may result in closing public access. Thank you for your cooperation and for keeping everyone safe.”
Boating conditions are different
New diversion structures have changed the river layout and local conditions. Boaters should use extreme caution near those structures and should not assume that a familiar approach, channel, launch or eddy remains unchanged. Slow down before entering the area, keep clear of construction features and obey every warning sign or direction from hatchery personnel.

The construction announcement does not establish a blanket finding that the river is unsafe for all boats. It does mean that normal local knowledge may be unreliable during the work. Inspect the route from shore when possible, account for altered flow and avoid operating close to active construction.
Fishing regulations still apply
The October 16 reopening concerns salmon retention access; it does not replace Washington’s current sport-fishing rules. Check the Washington Sport Fishing Rules or the Fish Washington mobile app for the season, species, area, gear and retention requirements in force for your trip. Carry the applicable license and follow any emergency rule or in-season notice.

Access permission and fishing permission are separate questions: being able to reach the river through a designated route does not authorize entry into a closed work area or permit retention outside the current regulations.
Renovation schedule and what is being built
Naselle Hatchery’s renovation is divided into phases. Phase one was completed in 2021. Phase two began in May 2026 and is expected to finish in fall 2027.

Because phase two is scheduled to continue into fall 2027, anglers should expect construction-related access controls to remain relevant across more than one fishing season. WDFW has not published an attendance, catch, budget or biological-performance statistic in the announcement.

If a boundary is unclear
- Stop at the last clear sign or barrier rather than trying to interpret an opening yourself.
- Ask hatchery staff where the current pedestrian route begins and ends.
- Move to the designated area they identify, even if it differs from a prior visit.
- If no safe route is available, leave the site and check current WDFW rules and notices before returning.
Ignoring a boundary can have consequences beyond an individual warning: WDFW says violations may lead to closure of public access for everyone. Cooperation helps preserve the access point while the hatchery’s safety and fish-passage upgrades are built.
