Andhra Pradesh is reported to be planning a publicly funded pilot of 177 3D-printed rural homes in Guntur district, but the available reporting does not confirm that construction has begun. The latest detailed report, published by The New Indian Express on 2 October 2026, says a launch and tripartite agreement were scheduled for 4 October. It describes a planned project—not completed homes or proven results.
What is Andhra Pradesh proposing?
The proposal is a pilot under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), India’s rural housing programme. The New Indian Express reported 177 homes across Burripalem and Obulanaidupalem in Guntur district, with an 18-month project period. Each home is planned to include a household latrine.
The reported unit mix distinguishes standard homes from larger barrier-free homes intended for people with disabilities:

These are figures in the 2 October report, not a confirmed final construction tally. An earlier Times of India report described an initial plan for around 100 homes. The later, more detailed account specifies 177.

Who is funding and overseeing the project?
The New Indian Express reported a total outlay of ₹13.93 crore, excluding taxes: ₹9.44 crore from the Union Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and ₹4.49 crore from the Andhra Pradesh government. The report divides those contributions as follows:

Under the reported arrangement, CSIR-CBRI—the Central Building Research Institute—would provide technology designs, concrete-mix formulations and technical oversight. A tripartite memorandum of understanding among MoRD, CSIR-CBRI and the state was scheduled for 4 October 2026. The pre-event reporting does not establish that it was signed or that construction started.

How is 3D concrete printing expected to work here?
The Times of India described a process in which computer-designed walls are produced by a specialized printer, then installed after foundations have been completed. The report said a private entity’s printer would be procured and that fly-ash bricks would also be used in construction. It did not identify the printer model or manufacturer, publish engineering specifications, or explain how printed wall sections would be connected to the rest of each home.
Concrete printing automates the placement of a printable mix into designed wall forms; it does not, by itself, mean an entire finished house emerges from a machine. Foundations, installation and other construction work remain part of the described process. The available account does not detail the pilot’s structural design, reinforcement, building services or quality-control procedures.

Are the speed, cost and comfort benefits proven?
No pilot-specific results are available in the cited reporting. The Times of India said a single-bedroom house was projected to take 45–60 days to construct, and reported expectations of fewer workers, lower costs and interiors about five degrees Celsius cooler than outdoors. Treat these as reported projections, not measurements from the Andhra Pradesh homes. The report does not define the timing baseline, cost comparison, temperature-measurement conditions or whether the figures apply uniformly across the proposed unit types.
To assess whether the approach works at scale, the useful comparison will be between those projections and verified pilot outcomes: actual time from foundation to handover, total cost on a consistent basis, quality and durability, and indoor comfort under specified weather and measurement conditions. The published project account does not supply those results.

What does the Indian precedent show—and not show?
On 1 October 2025, CSIR-CBRI inaugurated a 3D-concrete-printed rural house at its Roorkee campus under PMAY-G, according to a Ministry of Rural Development release published by PIB. That was a separate demonstration, not a delivered Andhra Pradesh home. It shows that a rural-house example was demonstrated in India; it does not establish the Guntur pilot’s schedule, cost, performance or scalability.
The same release reported the minister’s call to pilot 100 cost-effective printed homes to demonstrate scalability. Its programme-wide figures—3.85 crore PMAY-G homes sanctioned and 2.87 crore completed—were presented in October 2025 and concern the broader scheme, not 3D-printed construction. Likewise, the minister’s cited assessment figures of a 17% rise in household incomes, a 14% decline in hospital visits and 72% of houses in women’s names were programme-level claims, not outcomes attributed to printed homes.

What technical questions matter before wider adoption?
Concrete-printing projects depend on more than printer speed. The printable mix must work with the equipment and intended wall geometry, while the completed building must meet the relevant structural and safety requirements. The AP news reports do not publish the pilot’s full engineering criteria, so the following are evidence readers should look for—not established defects in the plan:
- Mix and print quality: the specified concrete formulation, strength and quality checks, including how consistency is controlled during printing.
- Structural and seismic assessment: design validation for local conditions and documented assessment of how the printed elements perform.
- Fire and durability: evidence on applicable fire-safety requirements, weather exposure and long-term maintenance.
- Construction integration: details for foundations, connections, reinforcement, openings, services and finishing.
- Outcome reporting: actual costs, build durations, inspections and handover status, compared with a clearly defined conventional baseline.
There is wider Indian work on some of these technical issues, but it is not identified as part of the Andhra Pradesh pilot. A 3 July 2026 PIB release says CSIR-SERC and Chennai-based Merlin Automation Solutions began collaborating on concrete mixes for 3D printing and seismic evaluation of G+1 printed-concrete buildings. That signals active research priorities; it does not confirm that their work or findings apply to the Guntur homes.
