Verdict: The second-generation Amazon Echo Studio is a substantial redesign, not a minor refresh. Its spherical body is approximately 40% smaller than the 2019 model, it fits more easily on shelves and desks, and it delivers impressive bass and room-filling sound for its size. But it is not an across-the-board sound-quality upgrade. The original Echo Studio can still sound more authoritative at the low end, while the new model’s spatial presentation and vocal clarity will not suit everyone.
The Echo Studio (2025) is therefore best for Alexa-first households that want a compact premium smart speaker, newer Alexa/Alexa+ hardware, and strong music performance. Existing owners of the first-generation Studio should upgrade mainly for the smaller design, newer assistant platform, or supported home-theater features—not simply because Amazon calls it “mightier.”

What is the Echo Studio (2025)?
The 2025 Echo Studio is the second-generation Echo Studio, replacing the tall cylindrical speaker Amazon introduced in 2019. Retailers and reviewers may call it the “Echo Studio 2nd Gen” or “Echo Studio (2025),” but it should not be confused with the smaller Echo Dot Max.
Amazon lists a US launch price of $219.99. That is the launch MSRP, not a guaranteed current sale price; Echo products are frequently discounted, so check the live price before buying.

Key specifications
| Feature | Echo Studio (2025) |
|---|---|
| Generation | Second generation, launched in 2025 |
| US launch price | $219.99 |
| Design | Spherical enclosure, approximately 40% smaller than the original according to Amazon |
| Drivers | One high-excursion woofer and three full-range drivers, according to Amazon |
| Audio features | Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos support |
| Processor | Amazon AZ3 Pro |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6 reported by RTINGS, plus Bluetooth |
| Colours | Graphite and Glacier White |
| Power | Mains-powered; it is not a battery-operated portable speaker |
The “40% smaller” figure is Amazon’s comparison with the original model. It does not mean every dimension—or the enclosure’s acoustic volume—has been reduced by exactly 40%. In practical terms, the new Studio is closer to the size of a large grapefruit and is substantially less visually dominant.

Design: the biggest everyday improvement
The spherical enclosure is the clearest change. The original Echo Studio looked like a large piece of audio equipment; the new model is easier to place on a nightstand, kitchen counter, desk, or open shelf. That matters in rooms where the first Studio’s height and footprint made placement awkward.
A fabric covering gives the speaker a softer appearance, and Amazon says its three-dimensional knitted material is acoustically transparent. The redesigned front-facing controls are also easier to see and reach than the controls on the cylindrical model. The light ring has a new visual treatment, while the physical microphone-mute control remains important for privacy.
Placement still affects performance. Put the speaker in a corner and bass may sound heavier than it does on an open shelf. Room correction or room-adaptation processing can compensate for some placement differences, but it cannot turn a cramped corner into a properly separated stereo system. Leave space around the speaker and judge it from your normal listening position rather than directly beside it.
Sound quality: impressive for its footprint, but not a universal upgrade
The central question is whether shrinking the enclosure has damaged the sound. The answer from the available independent coverage is nuanced: the new Echo Studio produces a surprisingly large sound from a much smaller body, but the original can still have advantages in certain kinds of listening.

Bass
The 2025 Studio has strong perceived bass and can make pop, electronic music, hip-hop, and film soundtracks feel substantial. Amazon’s high-excursion woofer is designed to move enough air to create deep bass from the compact enclosure.

That does not necessarily mean the new speaker has greater low-frequency authority than its predecessor. RTINGS found limitations in bass punch, and other coverage notes that the original model can retain more physical low-end impact. Bass-heavy tracks may sound exciting at moderate volume but less controlled when the speaker is pushed hard.
Vocals and midrange
RTINGS describes the new model’s mids as balanced, but its testing also identified limitations in vocal clarity. That means spoken-word content and lead vocals may not sound as forward or sharply separated as some listeners expect from a premium speaker.
Reviewers have not reached a universal consensus: some describe the new Studio’s presentation as broad and enjoyable, while others are more critical of its tonal balance. Treat that disagreement as a useful warning. If you listen mainly to singer-songwriters, podcasts, or dialogue-heavy television, vocal intelligibility may matter more to you than impressive bass.
Treble and detail
The Studio is not marketed as a neutral nearfield monitor. It is designed to make music sound spacious and substantial in a room. That can be a good fit for casual and enthusiastic listening, but buyers seeking the most precise, analytical presentation should consider a stereo-oriented system instead.
Volume and room size
Independent testing from RTINGS found the 2025 Studio louder and bassier than Amazon’s Echo Dot Max. That is the expected hierarchy, but it is useful context: the Studio is a meaningful step above Amazon’s smaller smart speakers for music.
In a bedroom, office, kitchen, or small living room, it should have enough output for normal listening and background entertainment. A larger room, high listening levels, or a party where you want maximum acoustic headroom may expose the limits of the smaller enclosure. Do not assume that smaller means louder; compactness improves placement, not necessarily maximum output.
Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos
Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos support are legitimate features, but the labels do not guarantee cinema-like surround sound from one compact enclosure. The result depends on the track, music service, delivery path, software, and listening position.

Compatible content can sound wider and more enveloping than ordinary playback. However, a single speaker cannot provide the physical left-right separation of two speakers placed apart. If conventional stereo imaging is your priority, a stereo pair or a speaker such as the Sonos Era 100 may be more satisfying.
Alexa, Alexa+, and the new hardware
The Echo Studio’s AZ3 Pro processor is one of the main reasons Amazon introduced the new model alongside its Alexa+ hardware push. Amazon positions the chip as supporting newer assistant and AI capabilities. That makes the 2025 Studio more future-facing than the 2019 model, but the processor alone does not prove faster responses, better recognition, or better sound.
Alexa+ must be evaluated separately from audio performance. Availability, features, account requirements, rollout timing, and pricing can vary by country and change independently of the hardware. Do not assume that every Alexa+ feature is available in every market, or that buying the speaker automatically includes every advanced service.
The speaker should still function as a conventional Alexa device without Alexa+, subject to Amazon’s normal cloud-service requirements. Voice assistants depend on an internet connection for many functions, and the presence of the AZ3 Pro should not be interpreted as proof that all processing happens locally. Use the physical microphone-mute control when you do not want the microphones listening; its indicator communicates the mute state.

Echo Studio (2025) versus the original Echo Studio
| Consideration | Echo Studio (2025) | Echo Studio (1st generation) |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Spherical and approximately 40% smaller, according to Amazon | Larger cylindrical enclosure |
| Smart platform | Newer hardware designed for Alexa/Alexa+ capabilities | Older hardware platform |
| Sound | Strong output for its size, with reported compromises in bass punch and vocal clarity | Can provide greater low-end authority |
| Placement | Easier to fit on furniture and in smaller rooms | Needs more vertical and visual space |
| Stereo behaviour | RTINGS reports stereo content is downmixed to mono in its testing; firmware and compatibility should be checked | Different behaviour and compatibility may apply |
| Upgrade case | Smaller body, newer processing, and selected newer features | Potentially better value for owners satisfied with its sound |
The comparison data from RTINGS’ model comparison is especially important because it prevents the new design from being mistaken for a straightforward replacement in sound quality.
For a new buyer: choose the 2025 model if the smaller enclosure and newer Alexa platform matter.

For an original owner: keep the first-generation Studio if sound is still satisfying and your main goal is stronger bass or traditional speaker performance. Upgrade for compactness, appearance, newer assistant features, or a supported home-theater configuration—not because the new model is automatically better sounding.
Echo Studio versus cheaper Echo models
The regular fourth-generation Echo is the sensible value alternative. It is better suited to voice commands, alarms, podcasts, radio, routines, and occasional music than to music-first listening. RTINGS characterizes it as a cheaper, scaled-back option.
Pay for the Studio when you will actually use its advantages:
- Stronger bass and a larger presentation for music.
- More ambitious audio hardware and room-adaptation features.
- Spatial-audio and Dolby Atmos capabilities.
- A premium enclosure for a prominent room.
- Newer hardware intended for Alexa+ features.
Choose the regular Echo when you mainly want a smart-home controller or bedside assistant, especially if the Studio is at full price and the regular model is discounted. Two cheaper speakers may create better left-right separation than one Studio, although they will not necessarily match its bass, output, or spatial-audio capabilities.
The Echo Dot Max is a smaller alternative within Amazon’s newer speaker generation. It is easier to fit and should cost less, but RTINGS identifies the Studio as louder and bassier. Choose the Dot Max for compactness and routine assistant use; choose the Studio for serious room-based listening.

The Sonos Era 100 is the most direct price-class competitor. Sonos listed it at $219 on its US store during the research period, though prices can change.
| Choose the Echo Studio for | Choose the Era 100 for |
|---|---|
| Alexa-first smart-home control | Stereo-oriented playback |
| Amazon services and Fire TV integration | Sonos multiroom expansion |
| Dolby Atmos and spatial-audio features | AirPlay 2 and a broader music-system approach |
| A single-brand Amazon setup | Trueplay tuning and Sonos ecosystem features |
The Era 100 also supports Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, line-in through an adapter, Sonos Voice Control, and Amazon Alexa. Sonos is the more natural choice if music-system flexibility and stereo separation are more important than Alexa’s deeper Amazon integration. Neither speaker is universally better; the right choice follows your ecosystem and listening priorities.

Echo Studio versus Apple HomePod
Apple’s second-generation HomePod is the stronger ecosystem match for people who use iPhone, Apple Music, AirPlay, and Apple Home. It offers spatial audio, room sensing, stereo pairing, multiroom audio, and Siri integration.
Apple’s US buying page has shown different prices in search snapshots, so verify the live price at Apple’s official HomePod store before purchase. The cited research places it above the Echo Studio’s $219.99 launch price.
- Choose Echo Studio: You use Alexa, Amazon services, Android devices, or Alexa-compatible smart-home products.
- Choose HomePod: Your household is heavily invested in Apple devices, AirPlay, Apple Music, and Apple Home.
Siri and Apple ecosystem compatibility are advantages for Apple users, but they are not direct evidence that the HomePod sounds better for every listener.
Home theater and multi-speaker use
Amazon says compatible Echo Studio or Echo Dot Max devices can be combined with compatible Fire TV devices in configurations of up to five speakers, with an optional Echo Sub. Compatibility depends on the specific Echo models, Fire TV hardware, account, region, and firmware.
Do not interpret that claim as support for every Echo device or every mixture of old and new Studios. Existing Alexa speaker groups may need reconfiguration, and mixing first-generation and 2025 Studios may not work in every configuration. Check Amazon’s current compatibility list before buying hardware for a home-theater system.

Price, value, and when the verdict changes
The $219.99 US launch price positions the Echo Studio above ordinary Echo models and directly alongside products such as the Sonos Era 100. Because Amazon’s current sale price can change, the most useful buying rule is based on what you pay rather than the launch slogan.
- At or near $219.99: Buy if you specifically want premium Alexa integration, compact design, strong bass, spatial audio, or newer Alexa hardware.
- At a meaningful discount: The Studio becomes much easier to recommend, including for buyers who simply want the best compact Echo for music.
- At full price for occasional use: A discounted regular Echo is probably better value.
- For an original Studio owner: Compare the trade-in or resale cost with the value of smaller size and newer features. Do not upgrade solely for better sound.
- Buying used: A first-generation Studio may offer stronger low-end performance per dollar, but warranty, return rights, software support, and seller reliability vary.
Who should buy the Echo Studio (2025)?
Buy it if:
- You already use Alexa and Amazon services.
- You want a premium single speaker without building a traditional hi-fi system.
- You need a smaller footprint than the original Studio.
- You prefer deep, enjoyable bass over strict audiophile neutrality.
- You want newer Alexa/Alexa+ hardware and may build an Amazon Fire TV setup.
- You value physical controls that are easy to see and reach.
Skip it, wait, or choose another speaker if:
- You already own a functioning first-generation Studio and mainly want better sound.
- You want the strongest possible bass from one Echo speaker.
- You expect true stereo reproduction from one enclosure.
- You rely on Apple devices and AirPlay more than Alexa.
- You want Sonos-style multiroom expansion and stereo separation.
- You mostly use a speaker for alarms, commands, podcasts, or background radio.
Final verdict
The 2025 Echo Studio is more capable for its size, not necessarily more powerful than the original in every audio measure. Amazon’s redesign solves the first model’s bulky footprint, adds newer processing, and preserves the bass-heavy, room-oriented character that makes the Studio more than an ordinary Echo.
That makes it a strong recommendation for new Alexa-first buyers who want compact premium sound. It is a qualified recommendation for original owners: keep the older speaker if maximum low-end authority and speaker-first performance matter most. For stereo music, Sonos remains the more natural alternative; for Apple households, the HomePod makes more sense; and for basic assistant duties, a cheaper Echo is the better value.
