Before troubleshooting: check the model and keep checks safe
Amana identifies the NTW4516FW family as a 3.5 cu. ft. top-load washer with a dual-action agitator. Its owner center provides model-family documentation, parts, and service links. Because the available guide does not specifically identify the NTW4516FW3 suffix, confirm the full model number on the appliance before following any revision-specific procedure.
Keep initial checks to visible hoses, faucets, controls, load arrangement, detergent amount, and outlet status. Do not bypass the lid lock or disassemble electrical or wet internal components. The model-family guide also says not to use an extension cord.
If the washer will not run or fill
- Check the water supply. Make sure both hot- and cold-water hoses are connected and both faucets are open. Look for kinks and check that the inlet screens are not visibly clogged. The washer needs water reaching the inlet valve.
- Check power. Confirm the washer is plugged into a grounded three-prong outlet. If the outlet has no power, or a breaker or fuse problem keeps recurring, seek qualified electrical help rather than opening the washer.
- Close the lid and allow the cycle to proceed. Make sure the lid is fully closed. Some pauses during a cycle are normal; wait for the pause to finish before deciding the washer has stopped.
- Loosen a crowded load. If items are packed tightly, remove some and redistribute the rest before restarting.
If the washer will not drain or spin, or clothes are still wet
Inspect the drain path and hose installation
Check the visible drain hose for kinks, and look for an obstruction in the drainpipe or utility sink. Secure the hose with its U-shaped form. Do not tape over or seal the drain opening.

For the NTW4516FW-family guide, the drain hose should extend no more than 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe, and its end should be no higher than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor. These are the measurements in Amana’s W11099666 use and care guide; check the guide for your exact model before changing hose routing.
Redistribute the load and consider the spin setting
An uneven or tightly packed load can leave items wetter. Pause and redistribute the laundry. A low-spin cycle also removes less water by design, so choose a suitable cycle and spin option for the load. If appropriate for the items, use Drain & Spin to remove excess water.

Check for excess suds
Too much detergent can create suds that slow or stop draining and spinning. Measure detergent as directed. If extra suds are visible or likely, the guide recommends Rinse & Spin without adding more detergent.
Consider small items
Small articles can become caught in the pump or between the basket and tub. Empty pockets before washing, and use garment bags for small items, as Amana recommends. Do not reach into internal washer components to retrieve an item.

If a light flashes or the lid-lock light stays on
The NTW4516FW-family guide says a spin light that remains on indicates the washer was unable to pump out water within 10 minutes. Treat that as an indicator condition, not proof of a particular failed part; check the drain path and load first.
Amana’s washer spin troubleshooting article says a flashing lid-lock light can mean the lid appears closed but is not locked. Check for an obstruction and wipe the lock striker with a damp cloth. Light behavior can vary by model, so confirm the meaning in the guide for the complete model number. Never bypass the lock.
