Allseas says construction of its new semi-submersible heavy transport vessel, Grand Tour, began on 16 September 2026 at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China. The vessel is designed to carry structures weighing up to 60,000 tonnes and fit inside the bow slot of Allseas’ installation vessel Pioneering Spirit, enabling a planned direct handoff from transport to offshore installation. Allseas currently schedules delivery for the first quarter of 2028.
What is the Grand Tour vessel?
Grand Tour is a semi-submersible heavy transport vessel being built to move very large offshore structures from fabrication yards to offshore project sites. Allseas cites next-generation 2-GW offshore wind converter platforms as one example of the cargo it is intended to transport. The 2-GW figure describes those platforms, not Grand Tour’s carrying capacity.
Allseas announced the construction start on 22 September 2026, saying work officially began six days earlier at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China. Offshore Magazine also reported in October that the yard had started building the vessel the previous month.
What are Grand Tour’s capacity and planned dimensions?
- Carrying capacity: up to 60,000 tonnes.
- Planned length: 230 metres.
- Planned width: 57 metres.
These are project specifications published by Allseas; they describe the vessel under construction, not independently measured operating performance.

How is Grand Tour designed to work with Pioneering Spirit?
Grand Tour is engineered to fit inside the bow slot of Pioneering Spirit, Allseas’ offshore installation vessel. The intended arrangement is for Grand Tour to transport a structure and then transfer it directly to Pioneering Spirit for installation. That connection is the project’s defining logistics feature: it links the journey from fabrication yard with the installation vessel’s work at sea.
Allseas presents the combined transport-and-installation approach as a way to improve efficiency and flexibility. The company says it can “deliver complex offshore infrastructure more efficiently and with greater flexibility, from fabrication yard to installation site.” This is Allseas’ stated rationale; Grand Tour is still being built, so the transfer and any operational gains have not yet been demonstrated in service.

When is Grand Tour scheduled for delivery?
Allseas’ announcement gives a planned delivery window of the first quarter of 2028. This is the owner’s schedule as stated on 22 September 2026, not a guaranteed completion date.

The start of construction turns Allseas’ planned transport link into an active shipbuilding project, but the vessel’s key value will depend on the future execution of the transport-to-installation handoff. For now, the confirmed milestones are the start at GSI, the published capacity and dimensions, the design compatibility with Pioneering Spirit, and the planned Q1 2028 delivery.
