A foyer is the entrance hall or arrival area just inside a home’s main door. It may be a separate room, a short passage or part of an open-plan living space. Whatever its shape, it should make the transition into the home work: give people somewhere to pause and set things down, keep the route onward clear, and fit the look and needs of the rooms around it.
What is a foyer, and how is it different from an entryway or hall?
“Foyer” usually means the area immediately inside a home’s main entrance. An entryway is a broader everyday term for that arrival space; a hall is generally a passage connecting rooms. In practice, the words overlap, and a home does not need a separate room to have a foyer. An open-plan entrance can serve the same purpose without walls or a distinct hall.
A defined foyer can create a clearer transition and screen the living areas from the door. An open entrance uses less separation, but can leave the living space more exposed and make coats, shoes and bags harder to keep out of sight. Neither layout is universally better; the right choice depends on the plan and household routine. For background on the term and common layouts, see ArchitectureLab’s foyer explainer.
What should a foyer do?
Plan around the arrival routine before choosing furniture. Think through what household members carry inside, where shoes and outerwear go, and where keys, mail and deliveries can land. Jan Revels, an ASID Allied Professional Interior Designer, puts it this way: “Everything a person carries in has to land somewhere within three steps of the door, or it lands on the kitchen counter.” Treat that as practical advice, not a measured rule.

Measure the door swing and the route into the home before adding a console, bench or storage. A useful foyer lets people arrive, pause, put things down and move onward without furniture becoming an obstacle.
How much room should you leave for furniture and circulation?
Revels recommends a console depth of 12–16 inches, 36 inches of clear floor at the door swing and 42 inches of circulation where two people pass. She also recommends a bench seat height of 17–19 inches and hanging a pendant or lantern at least 7 feet above the floor. These are her interior-design planning recommendations, not universal building-code minima. Actual fit depends on the space, door operation and household needs.
Use the figures as a starting point, then check the dimensions against the real route and the door in its open position. A narrow passage needs particular care: even a shallow piece can interfere with movement if it sits in the wrong place.

What furniture and storage belong in a foyer?
Choose only what supports the way the entrance is used. A landing surface can hold keys and mail, with a tray or bowl to keep small items together. A closet can contain coats and bags; hooks are a useful alternative where there is no closet. Seating can help people who remove shoes at the door, but a bench is optional and should not crowd the path. Concealed storage can keep everyday clutter from dominating the view.

In a very small entrance, Revels prioritizes a narrow shelf, a mirror and lower-level light over a bench. The essentials are a place for small items and an unobstructed route—not a full furniture set.
How should you light a foyer?
Revels recommends a central ceiling fixture sized to the space, a lamp at console height where practical, and visible light in the next room to draw people inward. Before selecting a ceiling fixture, check that it clears the door swing and people using the entrance. Ceiling height, room size, glare and household needs affect what works, so there is no single fixture placement or color temperature that suits every foyer.

Electrical installation or changes should be handled by a qualified professional. Whether work requires permits or must meet particular rules depends on the project and local requirements.
What flooring works best at an entrance?
Choose for the conditions at your door: grit, moisture, cleaning needs, the floor in adjacent rooms and clearance beneath the door. Revels describes stone or porcelain tile as durable, hardwood as a way to continue the look of adjoining rooms, and a patterned runner as one option for disguising grit. These are design observations, not a formal materials standard or a guarantee that one surface is safest.

A rug or runner may collect dirt and moisture, but fit and placement matter. Check that the door clears it, and avoid a small or shifting mat or an edge that curls up and creates a trip hazard. The surface, installation and maintenance all affect performance.

Do foyers have building-code or accessibility requirements?
There is no universal legal requirement for every home to have a separate foyer or a particular minimum foyer area. Requirements depend on the work being done, the applicable rules and their local adoption. If a project changes a structure, door, electrical system or required route, check with the local authority having jurisdiction rather than treating design advice as code.
Accessibility rules also depend on scope. The U.S. Access Board’s guide to entrances, doors and gates explains that relevant accessible doors require at least 32 inches of clear opening and discusses door controls and maneuvering clearances. The guide applies in ADA-covered settings; it is not a blanket specification for every private home or renovation. The Department of Justice’s 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design state that primary entrances to dwelling units must be accessible in the contexts covered by the Standards. They also include communication provisions for certain residential dwelling units, such as a hard-wired electric doorbell with audible and visible signals and a way to identify a visitor without opening the door, with a minimum 180-degree field of view.
For residential code context, a secondary ArchitectureLab explainer summarizes model International Residential Code provisions on exterior-door landings and hallways. The applicable edition and local amendments matter, so verify requirements for a specific project locally.

How do you make a small or open foyer work?
Start by preserving the route from the door. In a tiny foyer, a narrow shelf can provide a place for keys without taking the footprint of a console, and hooks can use wall space for coats and bags. Add seating only if there is room to use it without blocking the way. In an open-plan entrance, a small landing surface and contained storage can mark the arrival zone without adding a wall; keep in mind that belongings may remain visible from the living area.
Before buying or building, map the door swing, the route people actually use and the places items need to land. If the space is unusually narrow or awkward, built-in storage fitted to the wall may be an option, provided it does not compromise circulation or door operation.
