Sound Transit’s “flyover virtual tour” shows the planned 3.9-mile West Seattle Link Extension from SODO to Alaska Junction, using design decisions made through July 2026. The project is advancing through design, but construction has not begun: the agency’s current timeline schedules construction for 2027–2035 and targets service in 2035.
What the flyover shows
The October 9, 2026 visualization follows the future light-rail alignment from SODO through Delridge to Alaska Junction. Sound Transit says the model incorporates site-specific geotechnical information gathered through fieldwork and reflects design decisions through July 2026. It is a design visualization—not footage of a completed line or evidence that construction is underway.

The project would extend the regional light-rail network by 3.9 miles. Sound Transit projects that a trip from Alaska Junction to Westlake would take about 16 minutes once the extension is connected to the network, compared with approximately 30 minutes today. These are agency travel-time estimates, not measured results from an operating extension. Sound Transit’s flyover announcement describes the tour and projection.
Which stations are planned?
The current plan has three new stations: SODO, Delridge, and Alaska Junction. Avalon Station is no longer in the plan. Sound Transit says removing it shifts more of the route into a tunnel and reduces costs, community impacts, and property needs. The agency’s project map and summary describes the current alignment and station plan.

When is service expected to begin?
Sound Transit’s current timeline places design in 2025–2027 and construction in 2027–2035, with service targeted for 2035. That is later than the previous 2032 service target. The agency attributes the shift to the time spent developing a cost-savings workplan and refining construction timelines; it also says a new light-rail-only crossing of the Duwamish River requires more construction time. Sound Transit reports that a third-party review verified the schedule and characterizes the extension as approximately two to three years. The 2035 date remains a target, not a guaranteed opening date.

What changed in SODO?
The project’s SODO utility design changed after Sound Transit and the City of Seattle agreed on a technical solution for relocating Seattle City Light transmission infrastructure within the light-rail corridor. The revised approach covers 230-kilovolt and 26-kilovolt lines and avoids the previous plan to put the 230-kilovolt line on 6th Avenue South. The City says the redesign is expected to reduce property and construction impacts, lower risks to other city transportation and water infrastructure, and save the project over $100 million. That figure is an expected saving, not a completed one.

The City’s announcement on the SODO design refinements says coordination involved Seattle, Seattle City Light, elected leaders, and community stakeholders; it also notes that the revision clarifies affected properties and reduces impacts on nearby businesses.

What does “more than $2 billion in savings” mean?
Sound Transit reports more than $2 billion in identified project savings across design refinements. Its examples include removing Avalon Station, changing utility-relocation plans, and moving the Delridge guideway north. This is the agency’s reported savings figure; it is not the extension’s total project cost, and the cited project information does not establish an independent audit of that figure.
The SODO estimate of over $100 million is a separate, expected saving tied to the utility redesign. Neither figure means that construction savings have already been realized. Sound Transit’s August 2026 project update outlines its savings workplan and schedule changes.

What happens next?
Sound Transit says it will continue community engagement on station design, access to stations, development near stations, public art, and construction planning. The Federal Transit Administration issued a Record of Decision for the project on April 29, 2025, according to Sound Transit’s project updates. The agency says the updated refinements will be confirmed with FTA; the 2025 decision should not be read as approval of every later design refinement.

The next major milestone on the current schedule is the start of construction in 2027.
