For general joinery, a bevel-edge bench chisel is a flexible starting point; mortise, paring and carving chisels are designed for more specific cuts. Choose the style for the work, prepare and maintain its edge, and secure the workpiece before cutting.
What a wood chisel does
A wood chisel is a sharpened hand tool for removing or shaping wood. Its flat back can register against a surface to guide a cut. Push it by hand for controlled paring; use a suitable mallet when chopping requires more force. Blade shape and dimensions affect both access and strength.
Which type suits the work?
Bevel-edge bench chisels
These are versatile general-purpose chisels for common bench work and joinery. Their beveled sides help the blade reach tight corners and angled joints such as dovetails. Woodcraft recommends four Western-style bevel-edge chisels as a practical starter baseline, but the source does not prescribe universal widths; choose sizes around the work you actually do. Woodcraft’s guide to bevel-edge chisels was published March 9, 2022 and updated September 2, 2026.
Mortise chisels
A mortise chisel has a sturdier form for chopping deep mortises. Its strength suits heavier chopping better than treating a general bench chisel as interchangeable for repeated deep cuts.

Paring chisels
Paring chisels are longer, supporting controlled hand cuts and helping the user register the tool during fine fitting. They are not primarily intended for mallet-driven chopping.
Carving chisels
Carving chisels use edge geometries suited to shaping and carving. They are not simply alternatives to the straight, flat cuts associated with cabinetmaking chisels. Woodcraft’s carving-chisel sharpening guide distinguishes these forms.

How to choose
- Match the tool to the cut: use a bench chisel for flexible general work, a mortise chisel for deep mortises, a paring chisel for controlled hand fitting, and carving geometry for shaped carving.
- Consider access and strength: blade width and geometry affect whether the edge can reach the cut and withstand the way you intend to drive it.
- Choose useful widths, not a universal set: a four-piece bevel-edge set is one practical starting suggestion, not a requirement. Let the joints and tasks you make determine additional sizes.
- Factor in sharpening: a chisel needs a maintainable edge and regular honing; consider whether your sharpening stones and method can support the tool.
Prepare and maintain the edge
Set up a new chisel
A new chisel may need its back flattened and its cutting bevel honed before use. Woodcraft describes flattening the back on a medium waterstone, then shaping and honing the bevel. Its discussion presents 25 degrees as a common general-purpose bevel, not a rule for every steel, task or sharpening system.
Hone before the edge is fully dull
Lee Valley recommends using a honing guide for repeatable results, adding a small micro-bevel in its setup guidance, and honing regularly rather than waiting until the edge is fully dull. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not comparative test findings. A shaving from softwood end grain is one practical sharpness check. See Lee Valley’s getting-started guidance.

- Thick metal strike cap with flat surface for effective strikes
- Durable construction with lacquered blade to help protect against corrosion
- Tempered, carbon-steel blade with long lasting edge
- Lightweight design with ergonomic handle
Use a chisel safely
- Secure the workpiece. Clamp it or hold it in a vise so it cannot shift as you cut.
- Set your hand position and cut direction. Keep both hands behind the cutting edge and direct the chisel away from your body.
- Choose bevel orientation for the cut. For paring with the back registered against the work, bevel-up is common. Bevel-down can help with roughing cuts, waste removal or working corners.
- For notches and mortises, manage splitting. Lee Valley recommends making cross-grain cuts first when chopping these features.
- Use a suitable mallet for chopping. Match it to the chisel handle; do not assume a sharp edge makes an unsecured or poorly positioned cut safe.
- Protect the edge between cuts. Keep the chisel on the bench in a position that prevents accidental contact, with its edge protected.
These precautions reflect Lee Valley Tools’ safe-use guidance.
