Wanneroo City Council approved the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre business plan at its May 2024 meeting, moving the project beyond the earlier public-comment stage. The City’s latest listed project update, published in August 2026, forecasts a November 2026 opening; that remains an expected date, not confirmation that the centre has opened.
What Wanneroo Council approved
On 23 February 2024, Council agreed to advertise the business plan for public comment. That was not final approval. Council approved the plan at its May 2024 meeting, after it had been endorsed by the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre Working Group. The City said the plan assessed the proposed development and operation, including detailed financial modelling and a projected timeline. Project timeline and current status
- 23 February 2024: Council approved advertising the business plan for public comment.
- May 2024: Council approved the business plan.
- 11 December 2024: The project page says Council approved the construction tender and appointed PS Structures Pty Ltd, with work scheduled to start in January 2025.
- 10 February 2026: The City announced BlueFit Pty Ltd as the selected operator for an initial five-year term following a competitive tender. - August 2026: The City reported that water was being added to the outdoor pool. Its update said the three indoor pools and children’s splash pad were next for filling, with pools to undergo testing before opening.

Planned facilities and location
The centre is planned within Alkimos Central, north of Romeo Road and next to the future Alkimos METRONET station. The City lists indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fully equipped gym, dedicated fitness studios, multipurpose sports courts, a crèche, café, contemporary change rooms and on-site parking.
The outdoor pool is specified as 50 metres long with eight lanes. The multipurpose courts are intended for netball, soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton. The August 2026 construction update also identifies three indoor pools and a children’s splash pad in the filling and testing sequence.

Funding commitments announced in 2024
The City’s May 2024 announcement listed the following funding commitments. These are commitments reported at that time, not a final audited project cost.
- Australian Government: $30 million—$25 million under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program and $5 million through the Female Facilities and Water Safety Stream.
- State Government: $12.6 million—$10 million under the WA Recovery Plan, $2.5 million through the Community Sports & Recreation Facilities Fund, and $147,592 through the Changing Places program.
- Alkimos-Eglinton Developer Contribution Plan: $14.2 million.
In the same announcement, Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken said Alkimos was expected to be one of Perth’s fastest-growing suburbs over the next 20 years and that the centre would have a strong positive impact on the City’s future planning for the region. This was the Mayor’s view of anticipated growth and planning impact.
