A Windows computer runs the software, GNSS supplies position, and tractor-specific electronics and an actuator steer the wheels or control hydraulic steering. The right conversion depends first on what steering hardware the tractor already has.
What AgOpenGPS autosteer does—and does not do
AgOpenGPS is open-source Windows software used with AgIO and compatible positioning and steering hardware. It can guide a tractor along AB lines, curves, and contours. With lightbar guidance, the display helps the operator follow a path while the operator steers. With autosteer, a motor or hydraulic system makes steering corrections automatically.
Autosteer means automated steering along guidance paths; it does not mean the tractor is fully driverless. The operator remains responsible for the machine and its operation. AgOpenGPS also supports section control and rate control, but those are separate capabilities that need additional equipment and configuration.
Choose the steering approach before buying parts
Start by identifying whether the tractor is steer-ready and what steering components it already has. The documented approaches use different actuators, electronics, sensors, and wiring, so a parts list for one route is not a universal build list. Supporting components vary. Depending on the route, the setup may use a Teensy controller, a Cytron motor driver, a wheel-angle sensor, or the tractor’s own sensor. Confirm the detailed documentation for the selected configuration rather than assuming every build needs—or can use—the same parts.
What hardware a conversion typically needs
The official hardware quickstart guide separates basic lightbar guidance from standard autosteer. A Windows tablet and GNSS receiver are central to guidance; automated steering adds control electronics and an actuator. The exact supporting hardware depends on the receiver arrangement and steering approach.

- GNSS receiver and antenna: The quickstart identifies at least one ZED-F9P receiver with antenna and connection cable for lightbar guidance. The named ArduSimple ZED-F9P is a receiver example, not a complete conversion kit or a guarantee of compatibility with every board and antenna.
- Autosteer control electronics: The standard setup adds an AgOpenGPS PCB and a Teensy 4.1 controller.
- Steering actuator: Select the motor, wheel motor, valve, or compatible integrated steering approach that matches the tractor.
- Configuration-dependent parts: Sensors, motor drivers, and other components vary. An IMU may be used in a single-antenna setup, while other receiver configurations differ.
Before purchasing expensive hardware, work through the detailed setup material for the selected steering method and receiver configuration. The quickstart is an orientation to the categories of equipment, not a compatibility guarantee or a one-size-fits-all bill of materials.
How positioning and steering work together
The in-cab Windows device runs AgOpenGPS and AgIO. A GNSS receiver reports position; the control board and controller connect positioning information and relevant sensors to the steering actuator. Depending on the selected route, the actuator turns the steering wheel or operates a hydraulic steering system. The software uses the position and guidance path to determine steering corrections.

RTK correction is optional in the official guidance. It can be supplied through an existing RTK station or a base station, and the getting-started material describes a built-in NTRIP client. RTK is a positioning configuration choice, not a feature that every conversion automatically includes. Project documentation describes centimeter-level accuracy, but no single configuration-specific measured result establishes a universal field-accuracy guarantee; actual performance depends on the equipment and setup.
Decide which capability level you need
- Lightbar guidance: The display provides path guidance; the operator steers.
- Autosteer: A motor or valve controls steering along the guidance path.
- Autosteer plus section or rate control: Adds control of implement sections or application rates, with additional equipment and configuration.
These are distinct capability levels. Having AgOpenGPS installed, or adding an autosteer actuator, does not by itself provide section or rate control.

A practical decision sequence
- Inspect the tractor. Determine whether it is steer-ready, has a compatible CANBUS system or integrated valve, and what steering sensors are available.
- Select the steering route. Match the tractor’s existing hardware and mechanical or hydraulic constraints to one of the documented options.
- Choose the control and positioning configuration. Confirm the appropriate PCB, controller, GNSS receiver and antenna, and any required sensors or motor driver for that route.
- Check the detailed setup documentation before ordering. Verify compatibility and configuration-specific parts rather than treating a generic checklist as a kit.
- Decide whether RTK or implement controls are needed. Add those capabilities only if the intended operation and compatible equipment call for them.
What retrofit evidence establishes
A 2025 article in Agronomy Research, “AgOpenGPS – Retrofitting Autosteering,” is indexed with a retrofit component list that includes a steering-angle sensor, GNSS antenna and circuit board, hydraulic control unit, Windows-based laptop, USB hub, and main control module. That list is an example of components in a retrofit; it does not establish universal compatibility, cost, or measured performance for other tractors.
