Aliro 1.0 Launches: What It Really Means for Apple, Android and Samsung Smart-Home Access

Aliro 1.0 is a cross-platform access standard—not Apple Home Key for everyone. Here is what launched, what products support it and what buyers must verify.

Aliro 1.0 officially launched on February 26, 2026—but it did not make Apple Home Key universally available. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) released Aliro as an access-credential standard designed to help phones, watches, digital wallets, locks and access readers work together across ecosystems.

Apple Home Key remains Apple’s Wallet-based home-access feature. Aliro is the broader industry framework that could let manufacturers offer similar wallet-based access to Apple, Android and Samsung users. Early certified products are now available, but universal compatibility is still a work in progress.

What is Aliro?

Aliro is a standard for digital access credentials. It defines how a phone or wearable can securely communicate with a lock, keypad, door reader or other controlled entry point.

The intended applications extend beyond residential front doors. Aliro is designed for homes, apartments, offices, hotels, campuses, garages, elevators and other access-controlled spaces. It supports:

  • Bluetooth LE combined with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for proximity-aware, hands-free access on products that include the necessary hardware.

The standard also uses asymmetric cryptography for trusted device-to-reader interactions and is designed to support access in locations where the lock or reader has limited network connectivity. That does not mean provisioning, revoking credentials, updating firmware or managing an account can always happen offline.

The CSA describes Aliro as an interoperability foundation, not as a new lock, app or replacement for every existing access system. Read the CSA announcement of Aliro 1.0 for the specification’s stated scope.

Aliro, Apple Home Key and Matter are different

Technology What it does
Apple Home Key Apple’s digital home-key experience in Apple Wallet and the Apple Home ecosystem.
Aliro An industry standard for exchanging credentials between wallets, phones, wearables, locks and access readers.
Matter A smart-home command-and-control standard used to connect compatible devices to smart-home platforms.

Matter and Aliro are complementary rather than interchangeable. A lock may use Matter for smart-home integration and Aliro for credential-based unlocking. Espressif’s explanation of Aliro and Matter describes this distinction.

An Aliro-certified lock will not automatically support every wallet. Support still depends on the manufacturer’s implementation, the wallet provider, the user’s region, compatible hardware and the relevant operating-system version. An existing Apple Home Key lock also does not automatically become cross-platform through a software update.

What launched on February 26, 2026?

The February 26 launch was the release of the Aliro 1.0 specification, together with a certification program and test suites used through authorized testing laboratories.

Companies involved in the initial certification pipeline included Apple, Allegion, Aqara, Google, HID, Kastle, Kwikset, Last Lock, Nordic Semiconductor, Nuki, NXP, Qorvo, Samsung and STMicroelectronics. Participation in development or the certification pipeline is not the same as having a certified consumer product on sale.

That distinction matters. The most reliable way to verify support is to search for the exact product model in the CSA certified-product directory, rather than relying only on phrases such as “Aliro-ready” or “Aliro-compatible.”

Aqara Smart Lock U400

The Aqara Smart Lock U400 is a residential lock marketed with Aliro support. It combines Apple Home Key, NFC cards, fingerprint recognition, passcodes, app control and a mechanical-key fallback. Aqara also positions it for Matter and Thread integration and UWB hands-free access.

The UWB feature is not a universal Aliro requirement. Aqara’s implementation has its own compatibility conditions. Its U.S. listing specifies a Thread-enabled Apple Home controller, an Apple Watch Series 6 or later excluding Apple Watch SE, watchOS 11.5 or later, and an iPhone 11 or later excluding iPhone SE and iPhone 16e, running iOS 18.5 or later.

The U.S. Aqara store listed a two-pack at $529.99 when checked. That is a dated price signal, not a permanent price or a guarantee of availability in every country. Aqara announced availability for the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Check the official U400 listing and the CSA certification entry before purchasing.

Nuki Keypad 2 NFC

Nuki launched the Keypad 2 NFC on March 24, 2026, describing it as the first Aliro-certified keypad for residential electronic door locks. It supports Apple Home Key, Samsung Digital Home Key, Nuki app access, fingerprint recognition and personal access codes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not a universal standalone Aliro reader. It requires a compatible Nuki Smart Lock, and wallet-based access requires the relevant ecosystem’s Matter-capable hub plus a compatible phone or watch.

Nuki lists a U.S. recommended retail price of $179. The CSA directory identifies the product as Keypad 2 NFC, Aliro 1.0, firmware 1.0.0, hardware version 1.3, certification ID CSA26003ALR80003-NF, certified February 26, 2026. It is certified for NFC; that does not mean it provides UWB hands-free access. See Nuki’s product announcement and the CSA certification record.

What you need before buying

  1. Exact certification: Confirm that the specific model, not merely the product family, appears in the CSA directory.
  2. Desired access method: Check whether the product supports NFC, UWB or both. NFC requires a deliberate tap; UWB may support hands-free proximity access but needs more hardware and software support.
  3. Wallet support: Confirm whether the product supports Apple Wallet, Samsung Wallet, Google Wallet or another wallet you actually use. Do not infer this from Matter support.
  4. Phone and watch requirements: Check the manufacturer’s model and operating-system list.
  5. Hub requirements: Some setups require a Matter controller, Thread border router or ecosystem-specific home hub.
  6. Door compatibility: Verify the lock body, deadbolt, backset, door thickness and retrofit requirements.
  7. Fallback entry: Keep a physical key, code, fingerprint, NFC card or emergency-power procedure available.
  8. Regional availability: Wallet features and products may be sold or enabled in one country before another.

For Nuki’s Apple Home Key implementation, the company specifies an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18.6 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 11.6 or later, when paired with a compatible Nuki Smart Lock. These are Nuki requirements, not universal Aliro requirements.

A practical setup and verification process

There is no single universal Aliro setup flow because each manufacturer controls its hardware and provisioning process. A sensible installation sequence is:

Common problems and what to check

The wallet card does not appear

Check that the product supports that wallet in your country, the phone or watch meets the vendor’s requirements, the lock firmware is current and the required hub is online. A lock appearing in a Matter app does not prove that a wallet credential can be issued.

The lock works with NFC but not UWB

That may be expected. Products are certified for particular capabilities, and not every Aliro product includes UWB hardware. Confirm the exact product specification and the manufacturer’s phone, watch, operating-system and hub requirements.

The product says “Aliro-ready” but is not certified

Treat “ready” as a marketing or development claim until the exact model appears in the CSA directory. Certification is stronger evidence than a general compatibility statement.

The phone or watch is lost

Use the wallet provider’s device-management tools and the manufacturer’s credential-revocation process. Keep another entry method available while credentials are being removed or replaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The battery is dead

Use the product’s documented emergency-power input, physical key, keypad code or other fallback. Confirm this procedure during installation rather than after a lockout.

What Aliro does not solve yet

Aliro creates a common foundation, but it does not guarantee universal access. The final experience still depends on:

  • Whether Apple, Google, Samsung or another wallet provider supports the implementation.
  • Whether the manufacturer has completed certification for the exact product.
  • Which radios the hardware includes.
  • Firmware and operating-system versions.
  • Country-specific availability and policy.
  • Whether a hub or Matter controller is required.

Secure guest-key sharing is also not guaranteed by Aliro 1.0. The CSA FAQ presents broader secure key sharing as a potential future-phase use case. A specific lock may still offer guest codes or app-based invitations, but those features should not be confused with universal cross-platform Aliro sharing. See the CSA Aliro FAQ.

Is Aliro worth buying into now?

Choose an Aliro product now if:

  • Your household includes a mixture of Apple, Android and Samsung users.
  • You want wallet-based or tap-based access instead of relying only on a manufacturer app.
  • You have verified the exact wallet, phone, watch and hub requirements.
  • The lock includes a dependable mechanical or electronic fallback.
  • You are comfortable with an ecosystem that is still expanding.

Wait or choose a mature alternative if:

  • You need guaranteed Google Wallet support but the product only documents Apple or Samsung support.
  • Your current lock works well and has no clear certified upgrade path.
  • Your door uses unusual hardware or cannot accept the retrofit.
  • Hands-free UWB access is essential but the product is NFC-only.
  • You do not want to manage a Matter hub, firmware updates or multiple vendor accounts.

Apple-only households may see little immediate improvement if their existing Home Key lock already meets their needs. The more significant near-term opportunity is for mixed-platform homes, apartments, hospitality operators and access-control deployments that want a common foundation instead of separate integrations for every mobile ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bottom line

Aliro 1.0 is an important interoperability standard, not “Apple Home Key for everyone.” It launched on February 26, 2026, and early certified hardware—including Aqara’s U400 and Nuki’s Keypad 2 NFC—is now appearing. But cross-platform access remains product-, wallet-, region- and hardware-specific.

For a construction or renovation project, verify the exact certified model, required hub, door compatibility, supported wallet and fallback entry method before specifying it. Aliro is worth watching—and may be a strong choice for mixed-device properties—but the launch marks the beginning of the rollout, not the end of compatibility checks.
