Airflow in Vacuum Cleaners: Vacuum Suction vs. Airflow

Airflow measures moving air; suction measures pressure. Neither alone predicts floor pickup. Learn how to compare vacuum specifications and test conditions.

Airflow and suction describe different parts of a vacuum’s air performance: airflow is the volume of air moving over time, while suction is the pressure difference the machine can produce. Neither number alone tells you how well a vacuum will clean. For a meaningful comparison, check how airflow and pressure were measured—and whether the result reflects the cleaning head and floor surface.

Airflow vs. suction: what each measurement tells you

Airflow describes how much air moves through a vacuum in a given time. It is commonly expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Suction describes the pressure difference the machine produces; a common way to report it is water lift, often expressed in inches of water. These are related but distinct measurements, so a high suction figure does not tell you the airflow, and a high airflow figure does not tell you the pressure.

Think of airflow as a volume rate and suction as a pressure measurement. A vacuum needs air moving through its system to carry dust and debris, while pressure helps draw that air in. Looking at only one measurement leaves out part of the picture.

What air watts mean—and why input watts are different

Air watts combine airflow and vacuum pressure into a measure of air performance. Ametek’s technical material explains that both airflow, measured in CFM, and vacuum, measured in inches of water lift, are needed to calculate air watts: Ametek’s technical document on air watts and vacuum measurement.

Air watts are not the same as electrical input watts. Input watts describe electrical power consumed; they are not a direct measure of useful air performance. ASTM F558 treats air power and input power as separate results in its vacuum-cleaner air-performance test method: ASTM F558-24.

Why a strong airflow or suction figure does not guarantee better cleaning

A vacuum’s air-performance figure is not automatically a prediction of pickup from carpet or hard flooring. The cleaning head, surface, and test setup matter. ASTM F558-24 says its nozzle-mounted plenum test is an ideal air-performance measurement and is not intended to represent actual air performance during carpet or floor cleaning. A result from an open hose or idealized test arrangement should therefore not be read as a floor-cleaning score.

The standard’s stated scope covers certain commercial and household upright, canister, stick, hand-held, utility, and combination vacuum cleaners with hose provisions and series universal motors; it also says the method can apply to carpet-cleaning mode. It should not be assumed to cover every vacuum design. ASTM’s F11.22 subcommittee page lists F558-24 among active air-performance standards: ASTM F11.22 standards listing.

How to compare vacuum specifications fairly

Before comparing two models, check that the figures refer to the same metric and comparable test conditions. A number measured at the unit inlet may not be directly comparable with one measured at the hose end or nozzle.

  • Includes a crevice tool and dusting brush which snaps on the vacuum and are within reach at any time during cleaning
  • Identify the metric: Is the figure airflow (CFM), suction or water lift, air watts, or electrical input watts?
  • Find the measurement point: Was it measured at the unit, hose, nozzle, or another location?
  • Check the method and operating condition: Look for a named test method such as ASTM F558, the operating mode, and whether the figure is a maximum or a result at a stated operating point.
  • Separate air testing from cleaning results: Check whether the claim measures idealized air performance or pickup with a cleaning head on a specified surface.

There is no universal “good CFM” or “good air watts” cutoff established by the cited sources. A lone figure cannot rank every vacuum for every floor type.

Can a vacuum pressure gauge measure airflow?

A vacuum pressure gauge or manometer can measure pressure or water lift, but it does not measure airflow on its own and cannot establish how well a vacuum cleans a floor. Ametek describes measuring vacuum at multiple orifice points on an ASTM test box and calculating airflow from the pressure readings. That is a defined measurement setup, not a reason to treat one pressure reading as a complete performance result. See Ametek’s technical document for the measurement context.
