AI Tools for Architecture: What a Stantec Design Competition Reveals

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AI can accelerate architectural exploration, but it does not replace architectural judgment. In Stantec’s IdeaXchange competition, a team used AI across massing, programming, floor plans, material studies, façade scripting, visualization and proposal imagery. The clearest measured result was project-specific: an AI-assisted Grasshopper workflow reduced one origami-inspired façade scripting task from about 17 hours to 2 hours.

That result came from a fictional design exercise, not a controlled benchmark. The team kept people responsible for inputs, review, editing and decisions, and connected generated work to Grasshopper and Revit so it could continue into established BIM and sustainability processes.

What the architecture AI case study actually covers

Hans Davis, an associate and architect, and David Lee, a design coordinator, described the work in Building Design + Construction on February 11, 2026. Stantec published its account on December 11, 2025. Their article records an internal design competition and the workflow lessons from one team; it is not a product review, a sector-wide productivity study or proof that every practice will see the same gains.

Eight teams of eight people each developed a headquarters concept for an imaginary aerospace company. Team 7’s brief called for a three-story, 170,000-square-foot facility for 275 employees, combining offices, research and development and advanced manufacturing. Those figures describe a fictional competition proposal, not a completed building or a live client commission.

The original account is available from Building Design + Construction, with the authors’ eight operating mantras explained by Stantec.

Where the team used AI in the design process

The important point is breadth. AI was inserted at several points in an existing design workflow rather than treated as a single magic application.

Design task Use described by the team What the account establishes
Massing and site orientation Testing building forms in a realistic context, considering neighboring buildings and daylight orientation, exploring sustainability possibilities, and attempting 2D-to-3D conversion. AI supported rapid options and contextual studies during early design.
Programming and floor plans Estimating space requirements, checking recommendations against space use at real aerospace companies, using employee profiles with a large-language-model platform to examine user experience, and automating floor-plan iterations. AI helped generate and test planning alternatives; the named LLM and layout tool were not disclosed.
Interior materials Training an image tool on airport interiors featuring mass timber, then generating material-palette studies. Image generation was used for visual exploration; the specific tool was not identified.
Parametric façade Generating scripts for Grasshopper to create an origami-inspired façade in a 3D model. The reported task time fell from about 17 hours to 2 hours in this competition project.
Visualization and rendering Producing and editing images, adding people, refining details and testing furniture arrangements. AI helped the team obtain and revise concept visuals quickly.
Immersive review Validating the 3D environment with VR goggles. The account does not identify a headset model or report a measured performance result.
Proposal imagery Applying AI visualization to requests for proposals after the competition. The team says it could prepare multiple proposals quickly, while warning that a fast concept image is not a final buildable package.

How AI supported massing, context and orientation

Early massing normally involves repeated changes to volume, setbacks, adjacent context, view corridors and solar exposure. The team placed its fictional headquarters in a realistic setting and used AI to explore alternative forms while considering nearby buildings and daylight orientation. It also tested sustainability possibilities and tried converting two-dimensional images into three-dimensional models.

These operations are useful when the question is “What directions should we investigate?” They are not a substitute for verified site information. A generated mass may suggest a useful proportion or relationship to its surroundings, but the architect still has to establish the actual site boundary, zoning envelope, solar data, structure, access, fire strategy and environmental criteria before treating an option as a design decision.

Programming and floor-plan iteration

Estimating space needs

The team used AI to help estimate how much space the fictional company might need. It then checked those recommendations against space use at real aerospace companies. That sequence matters: a generated program was treated as a hypothesis to test, not as an authoritative brief.

Thinking through occupants

Employee profiles were supplied to an LLM platform to consider user experience. Profiles can prompt questions about adjacencies, privacy, collaboration, research work, manufacturing interfaces and visitor movement. They cannot establish the requirements of actual employees unless those people, their representatives and the client’s operational data are consulted.

Automating plan options

AI helped automate floor-plan iteration. In practice, that can make it cheaper to examine alternatives before the team commits to a preferred arrangement. Every option still needs architectural checking for dimensions, circulation, accessibility, egress, structure, services, acoustics, security and code compliance. The published account does not name the planning platform or provide an accuracy test.

Material studies and visual communication

For interiors, the team trained an AI tool on airport-project interiors featuring mass timber and used image generation to explore material palettes. The value was exploratory: images could help the designers discuss tone, texture, warmth, contrast and the relationship between timber and other finishes.

A generated palette is not a specification. Before a material can enter a project, the team must confirm availability, fire performance, moisture behavior, durability, maintenance, embodied-carbon assumptions, detailing, cost and procurement lead times. A visual that appears to show a particular wood product does not prove that the product, grade or assembly exists.

The same distinction applies to people, furniture and detail edits in renderings. They can make a concept easier for a client to react to, but they should not be mistaken for coordinated documentation.

The façade example: 17 hours reduced to 2

The most concrete number in the account concerns a parametric façade. The team used AI-generated scripts with Grasshopper to create a complex, origami-inspired façade in a 3D model. Davis and Lee report that the task took about 17 hours without that assistance and about 2 hours with it.

This is a report from one competition exercise, attributed to the Stantec authors. It is not an independently verified measurement, a repeatable benchmark or a promise of an 88 percent reduction for every façade or designer. The result could depend on the starting geometry, script quality, prompting, checking time, the team’s Grasshopper skill and what was counted as “the task.”

The workflow is significant because the generated scripts were not left as an isolated experiment. The team connected AI-assisted modeling to Grasshopper and made the models Revit-friendly, allowing the work to continue into downstream BIM and sustainability workflows. Editability and interoperability were therefore part of the result, not afterthoughts.

Why the hybrid workflow matters

Architecture depends on chains of information. A sketch becomes a model; a model informs quantities, analysis, coordination and documentation. If an AI output cannot be inspected, adjusted or transferred into the tools the project team already uses, its apparent speed may disappear during rework.

In this case, Grasshopper remained the environment for algorithmic design, while Revit compatibility preserved a route toward BIM coordination and sustainability work. That does not mean every generated surface was construction-ready. It means the team tried to keep exploratory automation connected to a production-oriented model rather than exporting a dead-end image.

For a practice evaluating an AI workflow, ask four questions before celebrating a fast output:

  • Can a designer inspect and edit the geometry, script or source data?
  • Can the result move into the firm’s established modeling and coordination tools?
  • What checking is required before the output influences a client decision?
  • Which parts are suitable only for concept exploration, and which can support later project stages?

Visualization, VR and proposal work

The team used AI to create and edit visualizations, add people, refine details and test furniture arrangements. It also reviewed the 3D environment through VR goggles to consider user experience. Immersive review can reveal scale, sightlines and spatial impressions that are difficult to judge from a flat image, but the account supplies no headset model and no controlled comparison with conventional review.

After the competition, the authors say their team applied AI visualization to requests for proposals and prepared multiple proposals in a short timeframe. This is a useful distinction for construction clients: a quick image can help a team test an idea and obtain an early reaction, while design development, coordination, approvals, specifications and construction information still require months or years.

Davis summarized the ambition this way: “What if we could create a quality rendering in 3 hours? That’s the kind of tool we want in our toolkit.” The statement describes a desired capability, not a guarantee that every rendering will meet a project’s quality, accuracy or approval requirements.

Eight practical rules for using AI in architecture

1. Keep the decision with the designer

AI can propose, transform and accelerate. It cannot own design intent, professional responsibility or the consequences of a choice. Designers select inputs, reject weak outputs, edit useful ones and make the final decisions.

2. Learn by doing

The authors emphasize hands-on experimentation. Small, bounded exercises reveal where a tool is helpful, where it creates cleanup and which skills the team needs before a live deadline.

3. Iterate deliberately

Useful results rarely arrive in one attempt. Compare alternatives, record what changed and retain enough context to understand why one option survived.

4. Match the tool to the task

A system that is effective for image ideation may be poor at editable geometry; a scripting assistant may be more valuable for a repetitive parametric task than for a finished rendering. Choose by task rather than by novelty.

5. Combine AI with established software

The Grasshopper and Revit connection illustrates this rule. Keep generated work inside workflows that support modeling, analysis, coordination and later revisions.

6. Share successes and failures

Teams improve faster when they document prompts, inputs, cleanup, review time and failure modes instead of showing only polished images.

7. Protect creative exploration

Early options can broaden a conversation before the team has committed to one direction. Exploration is valuable even when an option is ultimately rejected.

8. Transfer lessons thoughtfully

A competition is a safe place to learn, but a real project adds client data, contractual duties, code obligations, confidentiality and coordination risk. Move a proven practice into day-to-day work in controlled steps.

A responsible implementation sequence for a design office

  1. Define one narrow outcome. Start with a task such as generating façade-script variations, testing furniture layouts or producing an early material study. Avoid introducing an unbounded “AI design” mandate.
  2. Set the information boundary. Decide what site, client, employee and project data may be used, who can access it and what must remain confidential.
  3. Choose the existing workflow first. Identify whether the output must remain editable in Grasshopper, Revit or another approved environment before selecting an AI method.
  4. Create a review checklist. Include geometry, dimensions, code issues, accessibility, structure, services, material performance, visual accuracy and authorship or licensing concerns as appropriate to the task.
  5. Measure the whole task. Record preparation, prompting, generation, correction, coordination and review time. A fast first output is not a saving if cleanup takes longer than the original method.
  6. Run a small pilot. Compare several examples and have an experienced designer assess usefulness, editability and risk. Do not generalize from a single impressive result.
  7. Document what transfers. Keep the successful steps, rejected approaches and known limits so another team can reproduce the useful part without repeating the entire experiment.

What this case study does not prove

  • It does not establish an industry-wide productivity percentage or AI adoption rate.
  • It does not identify a preferred AI platform, headset or planning product.
  • It does not show that generated plans, models or images are suitable for permit, tender or construction documentation.
  • It does not demonstrate that a fictional aerospace headquarters brief represents the needs of a real aerospace company.
  • It does not remove the need for architects, engineers, code consultants, fabricators, contractors or client review.

The strongest conclusion is narrower and more useful: AI can make certain early design and communication tasks faster when a skilled team specifies the problem, checks the output and preserves a path into established project tools.

What construction teams should ask before relying on an AI image

When a client or design team presents an AI-generated image, ask what it is intended to communicate. If it is a mood or massing study, it can support an early conversation. If it is being used to imply a façade assembly, room layout, product or construction sequence, request the underlying model, dimensions, assumptions and responsible author.

Also ask whether the image has been edited to add people, furniture, vegetation or details that are not in the model. The Stantec team explicitly used AI for those edits. Such additions can improve communication while simultaneously making an image look more resolved than the underlying design. Treat visual polish and technical completeness as separate questions.
