A ₹859.25 crore civil-works contract has reportedly been awarded for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A’s airport corridor, with ground-level construction expected to start in the days after Diwali, according to a 26 October 2026 report by Gujarat Samachar. The project will connect Koteshwar Road with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport through a 6.032 km corridor containing four elevated stations and one underground airport station. No passenger-service opening date has been announced, and the contractor’s name has not been published in the sources currently available.
What exactly has been awarded?
The reported ₹859.25 crore figure covers civil works, not the complete cost of the metro extension. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation’s tender package GMRC/CONS/STNS+VDCT+UG/PH-2A/2026 includes the elevated viaduct, four elevated stations, the underground approach, twin cut-and-cover tunnels, a ramp and the underground airport station.

What is the approved Ahmedabad airport metro route?
The Union Cabinet approved a 6.032 km Phase 2A corridor on 10 June 2026. It will run from Koteshwar Road toward Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and provide five stations:

The civil package divides the route into 4.97 km of elevated viaduct, extending from Koteshwar Road to the underground-section ramp, and 1.01 km of underground construction. The remaining difference between those package figures and the 6.032 km approved corridor reflects the way the overall project and individual civil components are measured.
How will the airport station connect with the terminals?
The airport station is planned underground so passengers can connect with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport’s Terminals 1 and 2. The available approvals establish the station and its airport purpose, but they do not yet publish a final walking route, concourse map, travelator arrangement or terminal-by-terminal transfer time.
What passengers can confirm now
- There will be one underground station serving the airport corridor.
- The station is part of the approved five-station Phase 2A project.
- Detailed passenger-access arrangements remain subject to final design and construction information.
When will construction start and when will trains begin?
Gujarat Samachar reported that ground-level construction is expected to begin in the days after Diwali. That is a reported construction timetable, not a formally published commissioning date. The reviewed government approval, tender listing and news report do not provide a confirmed date for trial runs, safety certification or the start of passenger services.
An earlier civil-tender report cited a 36-month completion period. That duration should be treated as the tender schedule rather than a guaranteed opening date: actual delivery can depend on possession of work fronts, utility relocation, underground conditions, approvals, testing and systems integration.

How much will Phase 2A cost in total?
The Union Cabinet’s approved completion cost is ₹2,169.04 crore, including interest during construction (IDC). This is the full Phase 2A project cost, not the value of the newly reported civil package.
| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ₹859.25 crore | Reported civil-works award | Reported by Gujarat Samachar on 26 October 2026; bidder not named |
| ₹879.27 crore | Earlier estimated civil-tender value | Reported excluding taxes by Metro Rail Today |
| ₹2,169.04 crore | Approved Phase 2A completion cost | Includes interest during construction; Cabinet approval dated 10 June 2026 |
The larger approved amount covers more than the civil contract, including the project’s wider delivery and financing requirements. It should not be interpreted as the price paid to the civil contractor.

What will the completed project add to Ahmedabad’s metro network?
The government estimates that the active Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar metro network will reach 77.63 km when Phase 2A opens. The same Cabinet release estimates around 2,000 jobs during peak construction and 500 operations-and-maintenance jobs. Those are official projections, not measured employment outcomes.
For airport users, the principal change will be a rail connection to the airport area from the existing metro network. Until the line opens, travellers must continue using road-based access and should not assume that the future station is available during construction.

Why do published route lengths differ?
SYSTRA India said on 11 June 2026 that it had won a Detailed Design Consultancy contract for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 and described the airport link as a four-station, 5.11 km elevated corridor from Koteshwar Road to the airport. The later GMRC civil tender and the Cabinet approval define the complete Phase 2A scope as 6.032 km with five stations, including the underground section.
These figures describe different scopes: the consultancy announcement focused on an elevated, four-station portion, while the approved project includes the underground approach and airport station. They are not necessarily contradictory, but they should not be used interchangeably.

Who won the ₹859 crore airport-metro contract?
The contractor has not been identified in the current Gujarat Samachar report or the reviewed GMRC tender listing. A reliable identification requires a subsequent official award notice, letter of acceptance or work order. Readers should treat social-media or secondary claims naming a bidder as unverified unless GMRC publishes supporting documentation.
What should airport passengers and nearby residents watch next?
- GMRC’s formal award or work-order notice naming the contractor.
- Site handover, barricading and utility-shifting notices along the elevated and underground sections.
- Detailed station-access plans for Terminals 1 and 2.
- Official updates on construction milestones, testing and the eventual opening date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ₹859.25 crore figure the total price of Ahmedabad airport metro?

How many stations will Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A have?
Phase 2A has five approved stations: Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport. Four are elevated and the airport station is underground.
Can passengers use the airport metro after Diwali 2026?
No opening date has been announced. The post-Diwali reference concerns the expected start of ground-level construction, not the beginning of passenger services.
Why is one announcement calling the airport link 5.11 km?
The 5.11 km description from SYSTRA India refers to a four-station elevated scope. The approved Phase 2A corridor is 6.032 km because it also includes the underground section and fifth, airport station.
