The company announced the result on October 12, 2026, saying the award was presented at a ceremony in Chennai on October 9.
The announcement identifies several construction and site-management practices behind the recognition. It does not, however, publish project-specific figures for environmental savings, biodiversity outcomes, emissions reductions or wastewater performance. Those results should not be inferred from the award description alone.

According to Afcons’ October 12, 2026 announcement distributed by Newswire.ca, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project’s C-2 Package won the CII National Award for Environmental Best Practices 2026 for Biodiversity Management. The cited package is part of India’s Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.

CII lists 2012 as the award’s inception year. That general description explains the purpose of the programme, but it does not establish a quantified result for Afcons’ package.

Afcons names Mihir Mishra, Vice President – CPE, and Sumon Paul, Assistant General Manager – HSE, among the company team receiving the award at the Chennai ceremony. The release attributes the following statement to Giridhar Rajagopalan, Deputy Managing Director of Afcons Infrastructure Limited:

What is—and is not—established about the outcome
- Established by the announcement: the C-2 Package was identified as the 2026 CII award winner in Biodiversity Management; the four practices above were described; and the presentation took place in Chennai on October 9, 2026.
- Not established by the announcement: the amount of concrete washout recycled, the quantity of muck reused, the volume or quality of treated wastewater, the energy saved through skylights, biodiversity counts, habitat changes, emissions reductions or financial savings.
- Reporting limitation: the specific winner information comes from Afcons’ company release. A CII-hosted confirmation of this particular 2026 result was not identified in the available material, although CII’s official award page describes the programme generally.
For contractors, engineers and project owners, the distinction matters. Recycling or reuse can reduce demand for virgin materials and disposal, while treatment and daylighting can reduce other impacts, but the scale of any benefit depends on quantities, baselines, compliance results and operating conditions. None of those project metrics are supplied here.
Do not confuse this award with Afcons’ earlier environmental recognitions
Afcons’ January 2025 company magazine described environmental awards for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad C-2 project, Delhi–Meerut RRTS Package 8 and Agra UG Metro at the 18th Environmental Excellence Awards organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce. Those were earlier awards from a different organisation. They should not be treated as the same recognition as the 2026 Confederation of Indian Industry award reported in October.

Why the announcement matters for construction practice
The listed measures illustrate how environmental controls can be integrated into ordinary infrastructure workflows rather than treated as a separate activity. Concrete washout management targets a waste stream generated during batching and placement. Reusing tunnelling muck links excavation planning with production of precast segments. Wastewater treatment addresses a direct discharge risk, and skylights incorporate passive design into project facilities.

The award therefore signals recognition of the package’s stated management practices. A fuller assessment of environmental performance would require published baselines, monitoring data, quantities and verification from the project or the awarding body.
