The Aerobin 400 is a large, approximately 400-litre static composter designed to aerate its contents through an internal passive vent rather than regular turning. Its size and supported-base requirement make siting the first practical decision; its maker estimates compost may be ready in three to six months, but climate and how often you add material can extend that time. This review is based on manufacturer instructions and product listings, not hands-on testing.
What the Aerobin 400 is designed to do
The Aerobin 400 is an insulated home compost bin with a central passive aeration core marketed as the “Lung®.” Aerobin’s instructions describe it as a “static passive Vent or Lung® allowing passive ventilation throughout the whole composting mass.” The design is intended to remove the need to turn or churn the contents. It also has lower side access panels for removing finished compost and a base reservoir and outlet for liquid collected during composting. Aerobin 400 instructions
That is a description of the design and operating instructions, not a guarantee that every combination of scraps, garden waste and weather will compost equally well. The manual recommends balancing wet “green” material with dry “brown” material, and says cold conditions or adding only small amounts occasionally can lengthen the process.
Size, capacity and construction considerations
Published specifications are broadly consistent, though the sources use rounded conversions and different units. The manufacturer brochure gives approximate assembled dimensions and empty mass; Exaco lists rounded dimensions and weight in US customary units. Those are product specifications, not independent measurements.

- No-turn composting: the patented internal aerator lung design pulls fresh air through the pile automatically, so you get finished compost without manual turning or mixing.
- Insulated for all-season use: double-wall construction with polystyrene-insulated side panels and lid retains heat, keeping the composting process active through cold months.
- Compost tea on tap: a built-in leachate reservoir with hose and shut-off valve collects nutrient-rich liquid runoff you can dilute and use as fertilizer.
- Right-sized for smaller households: 55-gallon capacity fits compact yards, patios, and first-time composting setups without dominating the space.
| Source | Capacity | Assembled dimensions | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Environment Management Australia Pty Ltd brochure (publication date not stated; measurements marked approximate) | Approximately 400 litres / 400 kg | Approximately 740 × 740 × 1200 mm | Approximately 26 kg |
| Exaco product page | 400 litres / 113 US gallons | 29 × 29 × 47 inches | 56 lb net |
The capacity figure should not be read as a claim that the bin will hold 400 kg of every material: the brochure pairs an approximate volume with an approximate mass. Retail listings also vary by market. For example, Burpee describes a 113-gallon unit at roughly 29 inches wide and 47 inches high, while Maze Products lists 400 litres and about 74 × 74 × 120 cm. These listings show where the product is presented, not universal availability. Manufacturer brochure · Exaco product page · Burpee listing · Maze Products listing
For a construction-minded siting check, allow for a footprint of about 740 mm square and roughly 1.2 m of height, then consider access to the lower doors and drain outlet. The instructions specify a level, firm, even foundation—such as pavers or concrete—with the full underside supported. The maker warns that a loaded unit can weigh up to 400 kg and recommends choosing the final position before filling; moving it later requires emptying it. This is manufacturer guidance, not independent load testing. Installation instructions

- Twin chambers: Two separate chambers allow one side to finish composting while leaving the other side available to add fresh wastes; Constant alternation of the two sides will create an uninterrupted stream of nutritious compost
- 360⁰ Tumbling Design: The rotating design prevents you from digging or mixing the pile by hand; And the deep fins on eight panels make it easier to turn the compost bin
- Excellent Aeration: Air vents can make the air fully circulate and will not cause an explosion due to excessive internal pressure; Deep fins can better break the clumps, which is conducive to the full fermentation of oxygen
- Sturdy & Durable Construction: Constructed of premium metal frame and high-quality pp plastic body, this tumbling composter is corrosion-resistant, weathering-resistant, sturdy, and durable for long-lasting service life
- Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work
Using it and estimating composting time
The operating routine is simple in concept: add a balance of wet green and dry brown material, leave the passive core to ventilate the mass, and inspect the finished material through a lower access panel. The instructions say turning is not required. In practice, the manual itself qualifies the likely timeline: it estimates readiness within three to six months, with longer needed in cold weather or when additions are small and occasional. Treat that as the maker’s estimate, not a guaranteed cycle time. Aerobin 400 instructions
There is no documented head-to-head comparison in the available product material to establish that the Aerobin processes material faster or produces better compost than another specific bin. The product page promotes low odour, rodent resistance and year-round performance, but those should be understood as vendor claims rather than independently substantiated comparative results. - 【80 Gallon Large Capacity】Product Dimension: 23.5" x 23" x 32" (L x W x H). The outdoor compost bin can load up to 80 gallons (300L) of wastes for extended usage, which is big enough to store and ferment daily food waste. Compared to smaller compost bins, this composting bin reduces the frequency and increase the efficiency of composting and fermentation at a time.
- 【BPA-free Material & Sturdy Construction】Made of thickened eco-friendly BPA-free material, the outdoor composter is durable, ultraviolet-inhibited and weather-resistant to ensure long-lasting outdoor use without leakage or break. More, PP material can maintain heat and regulate moisture in the composting process.
- 【Hassle-free Assembly】With no tools or screws needed, what you need to do is to assemble four sides with lid together. And detailed instruction is included, so you will be done within minutes. The whole assembly process is a breeze.
- 【Convenient Composting & Great Circulation System】Simply open the large lid, fill it with a large amount of waste and after 6-8 weeks (less in the hot summer) you will have rich soil from the bottom door. In addition, there are 12 vents on each side to increase the contact area with oxygen and improve the efficiency of fermentation.
- 【Perfect Gardening Solution】Adding a compost bin to your backyard or garden can reuse your daily kitchen scraps & garden clippings while creating nutrient-rich soil for your vegetable or flower gardens. Furthermore, the grounding design (No shelf at bottom) facilitates liquid fertilizer to flow into the soil and allow worms to easily access interior.
Leachate collection, cleaning and safe handling
The base reservoir holds 15 litres according to the instructions. To drain it, place a low-sided container beneath the outlet; the outlet pipe acts as a valve. The manual notes that some owners fit 13 mm polypipe with a tap, but describes this as an option, not a required accessory. It recommends periodically emptying and back-flushing the tank. If the outlet blocks, the instructions suggest clearing it with a skewer or wire while the valve is open. Reservoir and maintenance instructions
The same manual advises hygiene precautions when handling compost or collected liquid, including attention to dust and bioaerosols. People with asthma, allergies or impaired immune defenses should take particular care.

Warranty, parts and regional availability
Warranty terms in the surfaced listings are not uniform. The instructions state a three-year guarantee against manufacturing or material defects, require proof of purchase and refer to Australian Consumer Law. A Costco Canada listing reports a one-year manufacturer-defect warranty. These are region- and seller-specific statements; confirm the warranty provided by your own seller and applicable jurisdiction rather than assuming one term applies everywhere. The manual says replacement parts can be obtained for a charge through the named company’s support contact, but the surfaced text does not list current part numbers or regional stock. Confirm model/version compatibility and availability with the relevant distributor before ordering.

Who should consider the Aerobin 400?
It is most worth considering if you want a high-capacity stationary bin and prefer not to turn compost by hand, and you have a suitable supported spot that remains accessible for loading, door access and drainage. Its footprint and the possibility of a heavy loaded unit make it less suitable for a location where you expect to move the bin after filling or cannot provide full, even support. The maker’s timeline and benefit claims should be weighed as guidance and promotion, not as independently tested outcomes.
