ADT is a good fit for homeowners who value 24/7 professional monitoring and optional professional installation more than the lowest possible price. It offers intrusion and life-safety monitoring, applicable cellular or battery backup, ADT+ control, and Google Nest/Yale integration. The trade-off is a potentially high total cost, complicated pricing, equipment charges, plan-dependent features, and possible long-term contracts or early-termination fees.
ADT is worth considering if your priority is 24/7 professional monitoring, life-safety protection, and optional professional installation—not if you simply want the cheapest cameras or the most flexible no-contract system. ADT’s main strengths are its established monitoring operation, alarm and smoke/CO coverage, cellular or battery backup on applicable systems, and integration with Google Nest cameras and Yale smart locks. Its main drawbacks are higher potential cost, complicated quotes, equipment charges, plan restrictions, installation fees, and possible long-term contracts or early-termination charges.

ADT is best understood as a monitoring-first security provider. The cameras, locks, sensors, hub, and app form an ecosystem around the central service: detecting an alarm, contacting the monitoring center, and helping coordinate a response. That is different from buying a standalone camera and responding to every notification yourself.

For a homeowner who wants someone else monitoring intrusion, smoke, carbon monoxide, and other configured alarms around the clock, ADT can justify its premium. Professional installation is also useful for people who do not want to design and install a system themselves. The Google Nest and Yale integrations make ADT more appealing if those products already fit your smart-home plans.
For a price-sensitive homeowner, renter, technically confident DIY user, or anyone determined to avoid a contract, ADT is harder to recommend without a careful quote comparison. A low advertised monthly rate may not include equipment, installation, permits, taxes, service-plan charges, camera-related features, or the cost of ending a professional agreement early.

The exact hardware matters. A plan may advertise camera-related capabilities, for example, but those features are useful only if compatible cameras are installed and the required service is active. Ask for the equipment list and the feature list together rather than choosing a plan from its name alone.

Official ADT offers reviewed for this article list the following DIY monitoring starting prices:

Those prices equal $299.88, $359.88, and $479.88 for 12 months of monitoring before equipment, taxes, permits, installation, service-plan charges, or add-ons. They are useful for comparing the starting service tiers, but they are not the total cost of an installed ADT system.
A separate ADT professional-monitoring page reviewed for this article says professional monitoring starts at $49.99 per month. That figure should not be treated as a universal professional-installation price or combined mechanically with the DIY table. ADT presents different offers for different equipment configurations and purchasing paths, and promotional pricing can change.

What can increase the bill?
Budget for more than the advertised monitoring rate. Depending on the offer and your location, the final amount may include:
- Equipment purchases or equipment charges
- Professional installation
- Taxes and local alarm permits
- Camera-related features or video-history services
- Quality Service Plan charges
- Additional sensors, locks, cameras, keypads, or life-safety devices
- Any required minimum equipment purchase
- Early-termination charges under an applicable professional agreement
ADT’s Quality Service Plan and other service terms should be read carefully. Ask whether a quoted charge is optional, required for the promotion, included for a limited period, or billed separately. Also ask which app and monitoring features disappear if you later downgrade from Complete or Smart to Secure.
Does ADT require a contract?
Not every ADT purchase follows the same contract structure. The current DIY offer reviewed here describes month-to-month monitoring with a one-month minimum and equipment purchased separately. That is materially more flexible than a typical professionally installed agreement.
Professional installation can be less flexible. ADT’s residential contract states that termination charges may apply after the initial 30-day period. The exact exposure depends on the agreement you sign, so do not assume that a professional installation is contract-free simply because an advertisement shows a monthly rate.
Before accepting a quote, get written answers to these questions:
- Is the monitoring agreement month-to-month or for a fixed term?
- When does the term begin: order date, installation date, activation date, or another date?
- What is the exact early-termination formula?
- Are equipment payments, promotional credits, or installation charges still owed after cancellation?
- Does moving house allow a transfer, and does the contract continue?
- What notice is required, if any, and how must it be submitted?
How ADT cancellation works
ADT’s cancellation information says a submitted cancellation request is processed when submitted, but service continues through the next billing date. ADT does not provide a partial-month refund. That billing rule is separate from whether a customer owes an early-termination charge under a signed professional-monitoring agreement.

For the reviewed DIY offer, cancellation instructions are provided through the order-confirmation materials or ADT’s designated cancellation process. The offer describes a one-month minimum. For a professionally installed system, read the signed agreement rather than relying on the DIY terms or a sales representative’s general explanation.
Before cancelling, download important camera clips, confirm the final billing date, save the agreement and cancellation confirmation, and ask what happens to equipment that you purchased, leased, or received as part of a promotion. If you use Google Nest or Yale devices outside ADT, also review account linking, access codes, and any subscriptions that may continue separately.
Professional monitoring and emergency response
ADT markets 24/7 professional monitoring, life-safety monitoring, cellular backup on applicable systems, and company-operated monitoring infrastructure. These are meaningful advantages over a system that depends entirely on the homeowner noticing a phone alert.
ADT also describes SMART Monitoring, which can notify household members about an alarm and, after verification, facilitate faster electronic transmission to participating 911 centers. That does not mean every alarm receives the same response or that emergency services are guaranteed to arrive within a particular time. The outcome depends on the alarm type, whether the system communicates successfully, the customer’s configuration, verification procedures, local dispatch practices, and the availability of the relevant emergency service.
Cellular or battery backup should also be treated as a system-specific feature, not a universal promise. Ask which devices remain operational during an internet outage or power failure, how long the backup lasts, and whether cameras still provide remote video when the home internet connection is down. An alarm communicator may have cellular backup while live camera access still depends on internet and Wi-Fi connectivity.

ADT equipment and the ADT+ app
The ADT+ app is the center of the current connected-home experience. With the appropriate equipment, plan, account, and network connection, it can provide:
- Remote arm and disarm
- Live camera feeds
- Smart alerts for people, packages, animals, and vehicles
- Access to Nest video history when the required feature and plan are present
- Control of compatible smart-home devices
- Access and automation features involving compatible Yale smart locks
Several remote-control and video features require working internet and Wi-Fi, a Google Account, and linking with Google Home. That account dependency is an important consideration for households that prefer to keep their security system separate from a Google smart-home account.

ADT’s current DIY Complete package reviewed here explicitly includes an ADT Base, two door/window sensors, a Google Nest Doorbell (battery), and a Yale Smart Lock. That makes the package more than an alarm starter kit, but it also means the advertised value depends on whether those included products suit your home and whether you want the associated app and account integrations.
Compatible accessories worth considering
If you already plan to use ADT’s Google Nest ecosystem, the Google Nest Doorbell (battery) is the most defensible accessory recommendation in this review: ADT explicitly includes it in a current Complete DIY package and identifies Nest doorbells as integrated with ADT and ADT+. It is an accessory recommendation, not an ADT monitoring enrollment, and buyers should verify the current listing, system-generation compatibility, and required plan before purchasing.

ADT describes it as compatible with the ADT smart-home system and ADT+ app, with live video and intelligent alerts. Up to 30 days of event video history depends on the applicable Nest Aware feature being included through ADT Complete or otherwise active. Confirm exactly who bills for that feature and whether it applies to your camera before buying.
The Yale Assure Lock 2 is relevant if smart entry and ADT’s Trusted Neighbor feature are priorities. Compatibility can depend on the lock model, hub, installation, and ADT configuration. Do not assume that every Yale lock or every ADT generation supports every automation or access feature.
These products should not be confused with professional monitoring. A compatible camera or lock may improve convenience and visibility, but it does not replace a monitored alarm communicator, life-safety sensor, or a properly configured response plan.
Privacy, video verification, and camera placement
ADT’s video-verification model requires a careful distinction. Customers can designate which cameras, if any, provide clips to ADT during an intrusion alarm so a monitoring center can help verify the event. That is not the same as saying ADT continuously watches every camera feed.
However, ADT’s service agreement also states that ADT and contractors may access personal information to provide services, and that audio and video services may transmit, record, store, and receive information through the internet and third-party systems. Customers are responsible for camera placement and for any notices, disclosures, and consents required by federal, state, and local law.
Before installing indoor cameras or enabling verification:
- Identify exactly which cameras can send clips during an alarm.
- Keep cameras out of spaces where recording would create an unreasonable privacy expectation.
- Tell household members, guests, employees, and contractors about recording where applicable.
- Review ADT, Google, and connected-device account security settings and enable available protections.
- Check how long clips are retained and download important footage before changing plans or cancelling.
- Ask whether a camera remains accessible in ADT+ if monitoring is downgraded or cancelled.
Video verification may help a monitoring center distinguish a genuine intrusion from a false alarm, but it also increases the amount of personal information moving through connected services. That trade-off should be part of the buying decision, not buried in the installation process.

Security.org separately reported testing response times and described ADT’s six-monitoring-center infrastructure. Within the pricing framework it reviewed, it considered Complete the strongest-value tier. Those conclusions support the broader picture: ADT’s value is concentrated in monitoring, service infrastructure, and an integrated system, not in being the lowest-cost route to a few cameras.
ADT’s legal and reputation history
There are two separate issues worth keeping in context.
In 2014, the Federal Trade Commission settled allegations that ADT presented paid endorsements as independent reviews. The settlement required disclosure of material connections. This matters when evaluating endorsements, testimonials, and expert-review language, but it is not evidence that current ADT equipment performs poorly.
On April 14, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice reported a separate settlement involving allegations that ADT imposed a 30-day notice requirement on servicemembers who ended contracts early under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. DOJ reported compensation for affected servicemembers, a civil penalty, and required policy and training changes. This is a dated legal development involving a specific statutory and customer group; it should not be generalized into a claim that every ADT customer faces the same cancellation experience. It is another reason to retain a copy of the agreement and ask how cancellation rights apply to your circumstances.
ADT and homeowners insurance
ADT can provide a monitoring certificate for insurance purposes, but that does not guarantee a premium reduction. Eligibility, documentation, savings, and approved equipment vary by insurer, state, policy, and system configuration. Ask your insurer about a home insurance discount for monitored security before treating a possible discount as part of ADT’s return on investment. Get the insurer’s requirements in writing and compare the actual savings with ADT’s total first-year cost.
Who should consider ADT?
ADT is a stronger fit if you:
- Want professional monitoring rather than managing every alarm yourself
- Need intrusion and life-safety monitoring in one system
- Prefer a recognizable national provider and company-operated monitoring infrastructure
- Want professional installation or help designing a larger system
- Already use, or specifically want, Google Nest cameras and Yale smart locks
- Value cellular or battery backup where it is included in the quoted configuration
- Are willing to pay more for service, installation, and support
Look closely at alternatives if you:
- Need the lowest recurring cost
- Want completely transparent, all-in pricing before speaking with sales
- Require no contract regardless of installation option
- Want to reuse equipment with another monitoring provider
- Prefer to keep security cameras and smart-home accounts outside Google’s ecosystem
- Are comfortable self-monitoring and do not need a professional response center
How to evaluate an ADT quote
Use this checklist before you accept an offer:
- List every device. Record the hub, sensors, smoke/CO detectors, cameras, locks, keypads, and any equipment not included in the headline package.
- Separate one-time and recurring charges. Note equipment, installation, activation, permits, taxes, Quality Service Plan charges, monitoring, video history, and other subscriptions.
- Calculate the first year. Add all upfront charges to 12 months of the actual quoted monitoring rate, not the lowest advertised starting price.
- Calculate the full term. Multiply the real monthly rate by the contract length and add likely equipment and service costs.
- Model cancellation. Ask for the exact termination charge after the initial 30-day period, if applicable, and ask what happens to promotional credits.
- Check the backup path. Confirm whether the hub communicates by cellular during an internet outage and how the system behaves during a power failure.
- Check camera privacy. Identify which cameras can be used for video verification, what is stored, and who can access the footage.
- Confirm downgrade consequences. Ask which live-video, video-history, verification, smart-home, and lock features stop working if you change plans.
- Request the terms in writing. Keep the quote, equipment list, contract, privacy terms, and cancellation confirmation together.
Final assessment
ADT remains a credible choice for homeowners who want a professionally monitored alarm and life-safety system with optional installation and a growing Google Nest/Yale smart-home layer. It is not the obvious choice for everyone. The service can become expensive once equipment, installation, taxes, permits, service-plan charges, camera features, and contract exposure are included.
The most responsible way to buy ADT is to compare the complete first-year and contract-term total, verify the exact equipment and backup features, understand the cancellation language, and decide whether Google-based video integration is a benefit or a dependency. If professional monitoring is the priority, ADT deserves a shortlist. If flexibility and low total cost matter more, scrutinize the agreement before treating the advertised monthly price as a bargain.

Bottom line: ADT’s premium is easiest to justify when you want professional monitoring, life-safety coverage, installation help, and Google Nest integration. Get the complete written total before signing, because the advertised monthly rate does not reveal the equipment cost, contract exposure, or all plan-dependent features.
