What Humidity Level Should You Maintain Indoors During Winter?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most homes, maintain indoor relative humidity (RH) between 30% and 50% during winter. As outdoor temperatures fall, however, cold windows and exterior surfaces make condensation more likely, so your home may need a lower target. If windows are wet or repeatedly fogged, reduce indoor RH rather than treating 50% as a mandatory setting.

For most homes, maintain indoor relative humidity (RH) between 30% and 50% during winter. However, that range is not an inflexible rule. As outdoor temperatures fall, cold windows and exterior surfaces make condensation more likely, so your home may need a lower RH target.

As a practical starting point, aim for about 30% to 40% RH during cold weather and increase it only if your windows and other cold surfaces remain dry. If you see water, persistent fogging, frost, damp walls, or mildew, lower the indoor RH and investigate the source of the moisture.

These figures are condensation-avoidance guidance, not universal comfort requirements. A well-insulated home with high-performance windows may tolerate somewhat higher RH without condensation. A house with older windows, inadequate insulation, air leaks, thermal bridges, or cold exterior walls may develop moisture at a lower reading.

Visible condensation takes precedence over the chart. If windows are wet or repeatedly fogged, reduce the humidity even if a general recommendation says that 40% or 50% is acceptable.

Why winter humidity must usually be lower

Relative humidity is the percentage of water vapor in the air compared with the maximum amount the air can hold at its current temperature. Heating cold outdoor air changes its relative humidity, while windows, exterior walls, and other parts of the building can remain much colder than the room air.

When warm, moist indoor air reaches a sufficiently cold surface, the water vapor turns into liquid water. This is condensation. It commonly appears on windows, window frames, exterior corners, uninsulated walls, pipes, and areas behind furniture.

That is why a humidity reading that seems moderate can still produce wet windows. The hygrometer measures air in one location; it does not measure the temperature or moisture condition of every surface in the building.

Measure before buying a humidifier or dehumidifier

Use a digital hygrometer or indoor humidity monitor rather than estimating humidity from how your skin or throat feels. EPA guidance recommends using a moisture or humidity gauge, and its humidifier guidance specifically identifies hygrometers as instruments for measuring indoor humidity.

Place the monitor in the occupied room or the room where you see a problem. Keep it away from:

  • A humidifier’s direct mist
  • Kitchen steam and cooking appliances
  • Bathroom exhaust outlets or shower steam
  • Exterior doors and drafts
  • Cold windows and exterior walls

An inexpensive consumer hygrometer is useful for tracking trends, but do not assume that every device has laboratory-grade accuracy. For a more useful picture, check the reading at different times of day and during different weather conditions. Cooking, bathing, laundry, occupancy, ventilation, outdoor temperature, and humidifier operation can all change the result.

Also measure more than one area when necessary. A living room may be within range while a bedroom, basement, or room with poor air circulation has condensation. Correct the local condition instead of assuming that one reading represents the entire house.

A simple winter humidity decision process

  1. Measure the room. Put a hygrometer in the room of concern and record the RH at different times.
  2. Look for condensation. Check windows, frames, exterior corners, closets, floors, curtains, and areas behind furniture.
  3. If RH is below about 30% and surfaces are dry, consider cautious humidification if the dry air is uncomfortable.
  4. If RH is between about 30% and 50% and there is no condensation, generally maintain the setting and continue monitoring.
  5. If outdoor temperatures become very low, lower the target according to the temperature guidance and your home’s condensation behavior.
  6. If RH is high or windows are wet, reduce moisture sources, use ventilation when appropriate, and consider dehumidification only if the problem persists.
  7. If dampness, mold, leaks, or building defects continue, correct the source or obtain qualified building, HVAC, or moisture-control assistance.

What to do if winter air is too dry

Low humidity can contribute to dry or irritated skin, nose, throat, and eyes. Those effects are comfort concerns, not proof that a particular RH percentage will prevent colds, cure respiratory disease, or guarantee better sleep.

If the measured RH is below your preferred range and there is no condensation problem, a humidifier or vaporizer can add moisture. Use the lowest setting that addresses the problem, and monitor the room with a hygrometer rather than relying only on the appliance’s dial.

EPA advises not to humidify above 50% RH. Condensation is a warning that the humidifier setting may be too high, the appliance may be too close to a cold surface, or the room may need less humidification.

Humidifier safety and maintenance

Humidifiers are not maintenance-free. Dirty tanks can accumulate bacteria, fungi, and mineral deposits, and some of those contaminants can be released into the air with the mist. CPSC and EPA both emphasize regular cleaning and careful control of RH.

  • Empty portable humidifier tanks daily.
  • Wipe the tank and surrounding surfaces dry.
  • Refill with fresh water rather than leaving old water in the tank.
  • Clean portable humidifiers about every third day, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Rinse thoroughly after using any cleaning or disinfecting solution.
  • Use lower-mineral water or a compatible demineralization cartridge, cassette, wick, or filter when the manufacturer recommends it.
  • Do not assume one cleaning chemical, filter, or replacement schedule applies to every model.

Keep steam vaporizers away from children. Hot water and steam can cause serious burns. If you have asthma, allergies, lung disease, or symptoms that seem to worsen when a humidifier is running, stop using it and consult a qualified clinician.

What to do if indoor humidity is too high

Humidity that remains above 50% deserves attention. EPA generally recommends keeping indoor RH below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%, while CDC guidance advises keeping home humidity no higher than 50% throughout the day. Higher, sustained RH increases the likelihood of condensation, mold, and other biological pollutants.

Start by reducing moisture at its source:

  • Run kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors.
  • Use the range hood while cooking and keep lids on boiling pots.
  • Run the bathroom fan during showers and for a while afterward.
  • Dry wet materials promptly.
  • Repair plumbing leaks, roof leaks, foundation seepage, and failing gutters or downspouts.
  • Improve air circulation around cold exterior walls and furniture.
  • Ventilate when outdoor conditions make that effective and appropriate.

A portable dehumidifier can be useful for persistent excess moisture, damp basements, or recurring condensation. It is not a necessary winter appliance for every household. Measure first, address the source, and use dehumidification as part of a broader moisture-control plan.

Visible mold, musty odors, recurring wet materials, or a leak should not be treated simply by changing the thermostat or humidifier setting. The underlying moisture problem must be repaired. Persistent condensation may also indicate inadequate insulation, air leakage, a cold bridge, poor ventilation, or another building-envelope issue.

Why the whole house may not have the same RH

Humidity is often unevenly distributed. Bathrooms and kitchens temporarily become much more humid after use. Basements may remain damp even when upper floors are comfortable. Bedrooms can develop overnight condensation because occupants add moisture while doors are closed and air circulation is limited.

Building conditions also vary from room to room. One window may be colder because of its orientation, age, glazing, shading, or air leakage. A corner room may have colder surfaces than an interior room. For construction and renovation decisions, the location and temperature of the affected surface can matter as much as the average room RH.

When to call for building or HVAC help

Obtain qualified help when you have:

  • Condensation that continues after lowering indoor RH
  • Water entering through walls, floors, roofs, or foundations
  • Recurring mold or musty odors
  • Persistent dampness in a basement or crawl space
  • Cold spots, drafts, or suspected missing insulation
  • Moisture inside walls, around windows, or behind finishes
  • A suspected vapor-barrier, ventilation, or building-envelope problem

A contractor, building-moisture professional, or HVAC specialist can help distinguish between a humidity-control problem and a defect in insulation, air sealing, ventilation, drainage, or water management. Dehumidifying the air may reduce symptoms without repairing the cause.

Bottom line

Start with 30% to 50% RH, but treat that as a general range rather than a rule. In very cold weather, target levels may need to fall to 35%, 30%, 25%, 20%, or even 15%, depending on outdoor temperature and the condition of your windows and exterior surfaces. Measure with a hygrometer, let condensation guide adjustments, control moisture at its source, and maintain any humidifier according to both EPA/CPSC safety guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions.

What should I do if my windows are wet in winter?

Yes. Wet or repeatedly fogged windows indicate that indoor moisture is condensing on a cold surface. Lower the RH, improve ventilation and air circulation, and investigate insulation or air-leakage problems if the condensation continues.

How can I measure indoor humidity accurately enough for home use?

Use a digital hygrometer or indoor humidity monitor in the room of concern. Keep it away from direct humidifier mist, kitchen or bathroom steam, drafts, and cold windows, and check it at different times.

Do I need a dehumidifier during winter?

Only if measured RH is persistently high or dampness continues after moisture sources are addressed. A dehumidifier is a conditional tool, not a required winter appliance for every home.

The Bottom Line

Maintain about 30%–50% relative humidity in winter, lowering the target as outdoor temperatures drop or whenever condensation appears. Measure the room before adding or removing moisture, and repair leaks, dampness, poor ventilation, or cold building surfaces rather than relying on an appliance alone.
