There is no single standard Adirondack chair-with-footrest plan: the footrest may be a separate stool, fold under the chair, or slide out from beneath the seat. Choose a plan by its mechanism, finished dimensions, and the detail it provides for cutting and assembly. The options below include a full-size folding chair, a counter-height design, and separate or built-in footrests.
Choose a footrest configuration first
How the footrest stores affects the chair’s footprint and the complexity of the build. A loose stool can be moved independently; folding or sliding mechanisms keep the footrest with the chair but add moving parts.
| Plan option | Footrest arrangement | Dimensions or plan detail |
|---|---|---|
| Woodcraft FD-700704 | Separate footrest; its legs fold for storage | Chair: 30 in. wide × 32 in. deep × 39.5 in. high. Footrest: 21 in. wide × 22⅜ in. deep × 14¾ in. high. |
| Kreg counter-height Adirondack-style stool | Footrest is part of the counter-height stool design | 46 in. high × 28 in. deep × 26¼ in. wide; the project is labeled advanced. |
| Ana White angled footstool | Separate add-on footstool for an Adirondack chair | Check the plan for its dimensions and cut details. |
| WoodworkersWorkshop paired chair and footrest | Chair and footrest are presented together as a plan | 16-page plan by Jan Svec and Chuck Hedlund, published in 2003; paper and PDF formats are listed. |
| WoodworkersWorkshop built-in footrest chair | Footrest stores under the seat, slides out, and has legs that swing down for support | 42.5 in. high × 31 in. wide × 37 in. deep. |
For another separate-stool option, Ana White’s heavy-duty Adirondack chair with footstool plan includes imperial and metric shopping and cut lists.
Compare size and plan detail before buying lumber
Check the finished footprint and height
Dimensions describe different designs, not interchangeable standards. The Woodcraft plan is a folding full-size chair; Kreg’s project is explicitly counter-height. Compare the plan drawing with your body, the available porch or deck space, and the clearance needed to fold or slide the footrest. For a stored chair, also account for the footrest’s folded or retracted position rather than relying only on the open dimensions.

Look for the information you need to build
A confident build depends on more than an overall dimension. Check whether the plan includes full-size curves or templates, a cutting list, hardware requirements, and a clear assembly sequence. Woodcraft’s listing includes full-size curved pieces, actual-size joinery details, a bill of materials and cutting list, hardware requirements, an exploded diagram, and a general furniture-building booklet. It does not provide project-specific assembly instructions, so builders may need to infer the sequence from the drawing.
Kreg’s advanced counter-height project provides a cut list, tools and materials, dimensions, and numbered directions. The plans are not equivalent in format: decide whether an exploded view is sufficient or whether you want step-by-step directions.

Match the plan to your tools and joinery experience
Curved Adirondack parts typically require accurate layout and curved cutting; the specific tool list depends on the chosen plan. Kreg’s counter-height design calls for a jigsaw, drill, pocket-hole jig, clamps, miter saw, square, tape measure, and sander. That pocket-hole jig is a requirement of this particular plan, not a universal Adirondack-chair tool.
The built-in sliding-footrest plan lists a table saw, router, drill, and jigsaw or bandsaw among its tools. Its retracting mechanism is a different build from a movable stool, so make sure you are prepared for the plan’s moving components and follow its own drawings and instructions.

Do not combine materials lists from different designs. Kreg’s counter-height plan gives lumber by nominal size and length, screw types and quantities, and cuts for the legs, supports, seat and back slats, and footrest. Those quantities apply to that project only. Ana White’s heavy-duty plan supplies its own imperial and metric lists, along with lumber, screws, exterior-appropriate glue, and tool information. For any plan, buy to its specified stock dimensions and fasteners rather than treating another chair’s list as a substitute.

Review the drawings and prepare safely
- Read the entire plan before cutting. Confirm the chair and footrest dimensions, stock sizes, cut list, hardware, and how the footrest moves or folds.
- Check that the tools suit the plan. Identify the tools needed for curved cuts, drilling, joinery, and sanding before starting; do not assume a tool list from another design applies.
- Follow workshop precautions in the plan. A published woodworking plan advises reviewing the plans before using tools and wearing safety goggles and an appropriate respirator when making sawdust or working with thinners. These are plan-specific precautions, not a complete safety standard for every tool, wood, or finish.
