A colorful window box works best when its plants suit the light, the box has room for their roots, and you can reach it to water and maintain it. Start by observing the actual conditions at the window, then choose a proportionate, securely mounted planter and build a layered planting that adds color without blocking the view.

Assess the window before choosing plants

Track how much direct sun reaches the spot and when. A window’s direction is only a starting point: nearby buildings, roof overhangs and trees can change the light considerably. The University of Maryland Extension’s window-box guidance and UF/IFAS’s site-planning advice both emphasize matching plants to conditions at the box itself.

  • Sunny exposure: Choose plants that tolerate the direct sun and heat the location receives. A sunny kitchen window can also be a useful place for herbs.
  • Part shade or shade: Look for plants suited to the actual amount of sun. UMass Amherst defines the shade exposure in its sample recipe as less than six hours of sun; that is a guide to that example, not a universal threshold for every plant or climate.
  • Changing or uncertain light: Observe the spot at different times of day before buying plants. A box that gets strong afternoon sun may need different choices from one receiving gentle morning light.

Plant recommendations vary by region and cultivar. Clemson Extension’s window-box and hanging-basket guidance offers sun and shade examples, but check that any specific plant suits local growing conditions.

Choose a box that fits the window and the installation

Look for an outdoor window box whose length and visual weight relate to the window, whose depth suits the plants, and whose position is accessible for care. Window boxes have limited growing space, so the plants you choose must fit that shallow root zone. If the box is difficult to reach safely, routine watering and maintenance become harder.

Plan for the weight after planting, not just the empty planter. A box filled with growing medium and watered plants weighs considerably more than an empty one. UF/IFAS advises selecting appropriate mounting hardware, but there is no universal bracket size or fastener: the right choice depends on the box, wall construction and installation method. Match the hardware to the actual filled load and mounting surface rather than guessing.

If the planter needs a liner, UF/IFAS identifies coconut fiber or sphagnum moss as options. A liner does not replace drainage: excess water still needs a way to escape.

Build color in layers without losing the view

Use a mix of forms so a narrow planting reads as a composed display. Combine low-growing or mounded color with foliage and plants that trail over the front edge. Consider the view from indoors as well as the appearance from outside; keep mature height in mind so stems and flowers do not obscure the window.

For a box against a wall, the RHS container-planting advice generally places taller plants at the back, with shorter plants toward the front. Adapt that principle to the narrow dimensions of a window box rather than following it as a rigid rule. Its container planting guide also recommends thinking about the direction from which the planting will be viewed.

Sample combinations for a 24-inch window box

These two recipes from UMass Amherst show how to combine color and contrasting foliage in the same planter length. They are starting points, not guarantees for every climate, cultivar or window exposure.

Exposure in the UMass example Plants for a 24-inch box Design effect
Sun Three bold-pink geraniums, two dark-blue, indigo or violet verbenas, and two dusty millers Bright flower color paired with silvery foliage
Shade (less than six hours of sun, as defined on the source page) Two pink Rieger begonias, two multicolored Rex begonias, and three white Browallia Pink and white blooms with varied foliage color

Before using either recipe, confirm that the named plants suit your region, the box’s depth and the light at your window. The UMass page advises checking water needs daily; actual watering depends on conditions.

Plant in a container-appropriate medium with drainage

Use a growing medium intended for containers rather than assuming ordinary garden soil will work in a window box. UMass recommends soilless mix and adequate drainage for container gardens; Clemson recommends lightweight potting mix and drainage holes. The RHS explains more about growing plants in containers. Waterlogged mix can damage plants, so use a planter with drainage and follow guidance suited to the container and plants.

The University of Maryland Extension provides one example mix for flowering annuals, perennials and foliage plants: two gallons sphagnum peat moss, one gallon perlite or horticultural vermiculite, one gallon screened compost, and two tablespoons ground limestone. In its peat-free variation, it suggests replacing peat with coir; for acid-loving plants, it says to omit the limestone. This is that source’s recipe, not a universal formula. See the University of Maryland Extension container-mix guidance for its context.

Check moisture and water according to conditions

A window box holds less growing medium than a garden bed, and containers can dry faster. Check the mix rather than relying on a fixed calendar: exposure, container size, weather and plant choice all affect how quickly it loses moisture.

  1. Check the compost or growing medium regularly, especially during warm, dry weather.
  2. When it needs water, water slowly and thoroughly so moisture reaches the root area.
  3. Check again as conditions change. The RHS says containers need regular watering in spring and summer, and during dry summer spells watering may be needed daily or every other day. Treat that as a condition-dependent guide, not a schedule that fits every box.

For practical checking and watering advice, see the RHS container watering guide. The UMass sample recipes advise daily checks, but the mix’s moisture—not a blanket timetable—should guide your care.
