For driving and removing ordinary nails, choose a nail (claw) hammer and match its size and weight to the job. Use specialty hammers for their intended work: a ball-peen hammer for shaping or riveting unhardened metal, for example, and a bricklayer hammer for masonry. Wear eye protection, avoid glancing blows, and take a hammer out of service if its face, claw, or handle is damaged.
What kind of hammer do I need?
Start with the material and task. A nail or claw hammer is the practical choice for common nail driving and removal. For other work, select a hammer designed for that task rather than treating every hammer as interchangeable.
| Hammer type | Typical use | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| Nail or claw hammer | Driving and withdrawing common nails | Choose a size and weight suited to the job. |
| Ball-peen hammer | Riveting, shaping, and straightening unhardened metal; its flat face can strike punches and chisels | For metalworking and related striking tasks, not a general substitute for a nail hammer. |
| Drilling hammer | Striking chisels, punches, star drills, and hardened nails | Use for the specified striking work. |
| Drywall hammer | Scoring and installing drywall | A specialty choice for drywall work. |
| Bricklayer hammer | Setting or splitting bricks | Choose for masonry work. |
| Shingler’s hatchet | Installing and trimming composition, wood, and fiberglass shingles | Intended for roofing tasks, not general nail driving. |
These uses are described in Estwing’s safety and product-care guidance. Estwing’s guidance does not name one best brand, model, handle material, or head weight; the useful starting point is a tool appropriate to the task and comfortable to control.
What is a ball-peen hammer used for?
A ball-peen hammer is primarily a metalworking tool. Its rounded end is used for riveting and for shaping or straightening unhardened metal. Its flat face can be used to strike punches and chisels. It is not the right default for pulling or driving common nails; use a nail hammer for that work.

How should I choose hammer size and weight?
Match the hammer’s size and weight to the work, as Estwing advises. A hammer that is unsuitable for the task can be harder to control. Estwing’s available guidance does not name a universally appropriate weight or provide comparative measurements for specific models, so choose based on the task and whether you can maintain controlled, accurate swings.
How do I use a hammer more safely?
- Wear eye protection and use the correct hammer or striking tool for the task.
- Keep the work positioned so you can make controlled blows; avoid glancing strikes.
- Do not strike a hammer or striking tool against another tool or a hardened object.
- Inspect the hammer before use and stop if you find any of the damage described below.
These are manufacturer safety recommendations from Estwing. For U.S. construction workplaces, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926.301(a) states: “Employers shall not issue or permit the use of unsafe hand tools.” The same construction regulation requires wooden handles to be free of splinters or cracks and kept tight in the tool; impact-tool heads, including those on drift pins, wedges, and chisels, must be kept free of mushrooming. These are requirements scoped to the cited U.S. construction regulation, not universal legal advice for every workplace or jurisdiction.

How do I know if a hammer is unsafe?
Remove a hammer from service if it has any of the following damage signs listed by Estwing:
- Chips or dents on the striking face
- A mushroomed face
- A crack in the claw section
- A dent in the handle
For construction work covered by OSHA’s cited regulation, also check that a wooden handle has no splinters or cracks and is tight in the tool, and that the head of an impact tool is not mushroomed. Do not keep using a damaged hammer simply because the defect seems small.
