Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes, fully automatic electric can crushers exist—but the label covers very different equipment. A compact marketplace machine may automate only the crushing stroke. A commercial electric-hydraulic unit may still require an operator to load every can. True hands-free feeding, separation, crushing, and discharge generally belong to industrial recycling systems.
Before buying, check one practical issue first: your recycling program may not want crushed cans. The U.S. EPA generally advises against crushing cans for single-stream recycling because flattened cans can be harder for sorting equipment to identify. Crushing is less problematic in multi-stream systems, but local rules take priority. Check your recycler’s requirements before purchasing equipment.

What does “fully automatic” mean?
Product descriptions often use automatic loosely. There are several distinct levels of automation:
- Automatic crushing cycle: You load one can and press a control; the machine performs the compression and return stroke.
- Automatic discharge: The crushed can drops or exits without being removed by hand.
- Magazine or hopper loading: Several cans can be placed into a storage chamber, although they may still be processed one at a time.
- Continuous automatic processing: A hopper or conveyor feeds cans into the crusher without individual loading.
- Integrated recycling line: The system separates ferrous cans, crushes aluminum, and conveys or blows the output into storage.
A machine that uses electricity but requires an operator to place every can into the chamber is better described as an electric automatic-cycle crusher or electric-hydraulic, manually fed crusher—not fully automatic in the ordinary sense.

Consumer desktop and wall-mounted electric models
Small electric crushers are commonly advertised for 8-, 12-, and 16-ounce aluminum beverage cans. One Home Depot listing for an Oyezvary model specifies 12- and 16-ounce cans and lists dimensions of approximately 17 × 3.3 × 6.3 inches, a weight of about 7.17 pounds, and a price of $218.09 when observed. Those are retail-listed specifications, not independent performance results. The listing does not establish cycle time, motor life, duty cycle, crushing force, or commercial suitability. See the Oyezvary listing.
A Walmart marketplace listing claims compatibility with 8-, 12-, and 16-ounce cans, capacity for up to eight cans, three-button controls, and automatic operation. However, Walmart identifies the item as unbranded and states that the product information has not been verified. “Up to eight cans” could mean hopper or magazine capacity; it does not prove that eight cans are crushed simultaneously or that the machine delivers eight cans per cycle. Review the marketplace listing carefully.
For construction shops, garages, bars, or small businesses, the critical questions are whether the unit has a downloadable manual, a stated electrical rating, an enclosed chamber, a real warranty, replacement parts, and a defined jam-clearing procedure. A low purchase price is not useful if a failed control board or broken linkage makes the machine disposable.

Commercial machines are more established, but they are often manually fed. The Edlund CH-5000 uses an electric motor and hydraulic system to complete the crushing cycle and discharge the crushed can. It is listed at up to 10 cans per minute, weighs approximately 170 pounds, and measures about 30 × 12 × 16 inches. The 115-volt version requires 20 amps; a separate 220-volt version is also listed. See Edlund’s catalog.
That is substantial equipment, not a normal countertop appliance. The operator still loads cans individually, so the unit reduces crushing effort rather than eliminating labor. Price signals in the cited catalog and retailer listings ranged from roughly $11,819–$11,931 at some retailers to catalog suggested prices around $16,526–$16,594, depending on configuration, dealer, shipping, and availability. Treat these as observed price signals, not fixed current prices. See a retailer specification page.

Industrial automatic crushing systems
Industrial systems are the closest match to the ordinary meaning of “fully automatic.” They may include an in-feed hopper, conveyor, magnetic separator, crusher, blower, access-door interlocks, and discharge into a container or trailer.
REM’s CC Series is designed to separate steel from aluminum, crush aluminum cans, and pneumatically move the processed material. Listed models are rated at approximately 1,400–2,000 pounds of aluminum cans per hour, while the CC-10 EXT is advertised at up to 3,500 pounds per hour. These are manufacturer capacity claims for industrial equipment, not expectations for a household or small-business machine. View the REM CC Series.
How an electric can crusher works
Designs vary, but the basic process is consistent:
- An electric motor drives either a mechanical ram, screw, eccentric linkage, or hydraulic pump.
- The ram or crushing surface compresses the can inside an enclosed chamber.
- The mechanism returns to its starting position.
- A discharge opening, ejector, or gravity path releases the flattened can.
Electric-hydraulic machines use the motor to power a pump, which sends hydraulic fluid to a cylinder. Industrial rotary systems use rotating crushing surfaces to process a continuous stream. A hopper can hold multiple cans, but hopper capacity is not the same as crushing throughput.
For any model, the safe operating sequence should come from its manual. In general, the operator should use only approved, empty cans; load them correctly; close the guard or door; run the cycle; and disconnect power before clearing a jam or cleaning.
What can it crush?
Most small electric models are intended for empty aluminum beverage cans within a stated height and diameter range. The Oyezvary listing, for example, specifies 12- and 16-ounce aluminum cans. Do not assume that another model accepts the same sizes.

Confirm compatibility before using:
- Steel or tin-plated food cans
- Tall or unusually wide beverage cans
- Large institutional containers
- Paint cans
- Aerosol cans
- Plastic bottles
- Glass containers
Steel cans require a crusher designed and rated for them. Aerosol and paint cans can retain pressure or hazardous residue and should not be placed in a beverage-can crusher unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Never crush a full or partly full container, a battery, a can containing chemicals, or any object not listed in the manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould you crush cans for recycling?
This is the most important purchasing qualification for household users. The EPA generally says not to crush aluminum cans when using a single-stream recycling system because flattened cans may be more difficult for sorting equipment to detect. Crushing may be acceptable in a multi-stream system, but your local facility’s rules control. Deposit-return centers may also have their own requirements. Read the EPA’s recycling guidance.
Crushing reduces storage volume; it does not automatically make aluminum more recyclable or more valuable. The environmental benefit comes primarily from recovering the aluminum. The EPA states that recycling one ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 152 million Btu of energy. See the EPA recycling FAQ.
Is an electric crusher faster than a manual crusher?
Not necessarily for small quantities. Total workflow time includes picking up cans, orienting them, loading the chamber, waiting for the cycle, collecting the output, clearing occasional jams, and cleaning residue. A manual wall-mounted crusher may be faster for a few cans because it has no startup or powered cycle.
Electric equipment becomes more attractive when a restaurant, event venue, institution, or recycling operation processes cans repeatedly and wants to reduce operator fatigue or storage volume. Ask for a rate that includes loading and discharge—not merely a motor cycle time.

Specifications that matter
Throughput
Look for cans per cycle, cans per minute, maximum continuous duty, required cool-down periods, and the can size used for the rating. “Fast,” “heavy duty,” and “high efficiency” are marketing terms unless supported by measurable specifications.
Automation level
Rank the machine honestly: manual lever; foot pedal; powered crushing with manual loading; automatic cycle and discharge; multi-can magazine; hopper-fed continuous system; or complete sorting, crushing, and discharge line.
Electrical requirements
Check voltage, amperage, plug type, circuit requirements, phase, grounding, and duty cycle. Do not assume an electric machine can use an ordinary 15-amp household receptacle. The Edlund CH-5000’s 115-volt configuration is listed at 20 amps and may require a suitable dedicated circuit. Industrial systems may require substantially different electrical service and professional installation.
Safety and serviceability
Prefer equipment with:
- A fully enclosed chamber
- An interlocked access door or lid
- A main electrical disconnect
- Overload protection
- A documented jam-reverse procedure
- Guarding around moving parts
- Stable mounting or non-slip feet
- A grounded connection
- A named manufacturer and reachable support
- Replacement wear parts and a published warranty
REM specifically describes access-door electrical interlocks and a main disconnect on its commercial systems. These features reduce risk but do not make operation risk-free. Never reach into a chamber while the machine is connected to power. For a jam, follow the manual’s shutdown procedure, disconnect power, and wait until every moving part has stopped.
Common failure modes
Jams
Oversized cans, steel cans in an aluminum-only machine, partly full cans, angled loading, deformed cans, multiple cans entering together, and sticky residue can all cause jams. Use only approved sizes and materials, and never force the ram. Use a reverse function only if the machine provides one.
Overheating
Repeated overloads, operation beyond the duty cycle, inadequate ventilation, hydraulic leaks, low fluid, or insufficient cool-down time can overheat a motor or hydraulic system. A machine rated for occasional use is not automatically suitable for continuous production.

Poor discharge
Wet chambers, malformed cans, residue, or a narrow discharge path can leave a crushed can stuck. Cleanability and access to the crushing box matter as much as nominal crushing force.
Corrosion and hygiene
Beer, soda, and food residue attract pests and can corrode components. Commercial buyers should inspect how easily the chamber, drain areas, and discharge path can be cleaned.

Alternatives to a fully automatic electric crusher
- Manual wall-mounted crusher: inexpensive, simple, and often adequate for occasional use.
- Foot-operated crusher: useful where hands-free loading matters, but material compatibility remains model-specific. One listed foot-operated model claims compatibility with aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and steel food cans; that claim applies only to that model. See the example listing.
- Pneumatic crusher: practical where compressed air is already available. Mil-tek’s A101 is listed for metal containers up to seven gallons, with claimed 85–90% compaction and a 10–20-second pressing cycle. View the A101.
- Baler or compactor: more appropriate when the real problem is a large mixed waste stream rather than beverage cans alone.
- No crusher: often the best choice when local curbside recycling prefers cans uncrushed.
Buying checklist
- Ask your recycler whether crushed aluminum cans are accepted.
- Measure cans by material, diameter, and height.
- Count the cans produced per day or week.
- Decide whether you need automatic cycling, automatic discharge, or genuinely automatic feeding.
- Obtain the voltage, amperage, plug, circuit, and duty-cycle specifications.
- Require a manual, warranty, safety information, and jam-clearing instructions.
- Confirm whether the manufacturer supplies replacement parts.
- Check the footprint, mounting, ventilation, noise, cleaning access, and drainage.
- Calculate the value of reduced storage, labor, and waste pickups rather than assuming scrap revenue will pay for the machine.
- Compare the powered machine with a manual, pneumatic, compaction, or collection-service alternative.
Who should buy one?
Most households producing a few cans per week: probably no crusher, especially where single-stream recycling discourages flattened cans.
Home workshops or small venues: consider a compact electric model only if its manufacturer, electrical rating, warranty, safety documentation, and can-size limits are clear.
Restaurants, cafeterias, institutions, and event venues: a commercial electric-hydraulic crusher may be justified when volume, fatigue, storage, and waste-handling costs support the investment. Remember that a unit such as the Edlund CH-5000 is powered and automatic-cycle, but manually fed.
Recycling centers and scrap processors: look at hopper-fed industrial systems with separation, guarding, discharge, installation support, and a documented throughput suitable for the material stream.
