A small pool can be one of the best upgrades for a compact backyard, but only when it is planned like a real construction project, not just a pretty rectangle of water. The right small pool can cool you off, give kids a place to play, create a strong visual feature, support low-impact exercise, or anchor an outdoor entertaining area. The wrong one can leave you with no deck space, loud equipment by the bedroom window, drainage problems, and a pool that technically fits but does not function well.
For most homeowners, a small inground pool means something under about 12 feet by 24 feet, under 26 feet long, or under 400 square feet of water surface. Plunge pools and cocktail pools are often much smaller, with practical footprints like 7 by 7 feet, 10 by 6 feet, 13 by 7 feet, or 16 by 8 feet. Those dimensions matter because a small yard usually has fixed constraints: fence setbacks, easements, utilities, tree roots, equipment access, and enough hardscape for people to move safely around the pool.
In 2026, realistic installed pricing in the U.S. commonly starts around $35,000 to $50,000 for simpler small inground pools, $45,000 to $85,000 for many small fiberglass pools, and $40,000 to $75,000 for many precast concrete plunge pools. Custom concrete, raised walls, spas, premium tile, difficult access, and retaining walls can push a small pool to $120,000 or more. Above-ground pools remain the lowest-cost path, from a few hundred dollars for soft-sided models to $1,800 to $10,000 for many metal-framed options before decking, fencing, grading, or electrical work.
On our job sites, the best small pool projects usually start with one question: what should this pool do every week? Once that is clear, the shape, depth, equipment, deck, privacy, and budget decisions get much easier.

Start With the Right Type of Small Pool
The phrase “small pool” covers a lot of different builds. A pool for floating with a drink is not the same as a pool for swimming laps, and a spa-style pool with heat and jets is not the same as a budget above-ground pool with a clean deck surround. Use the pool type to match the way you actually live outside.
| Pool Type | Common Size Range | Best For | Typical 2026 Installed Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plunge pool | 7 by 7 ft to 16 by 8 ft | Cooling off, soaking, small yards | $10,000-$40,000 commonly; inground versions can reach $70,000+ |
| Cocktail pool | 10 by 12 ft to 12 by 20 ft | Social seating, lounging, entertaining | About $15,000-$35,000, more with premium finishes |
| Spool | 10 by 14 ft to 12 by 20 ft | Spa-style use, jets, heating, year-round soaking | About $20,000-$40,000 basic; custom versions can exceed that |
| Narrow lap pool | 8 by 30 ft or longer where space allows | Exercise, modern side yards | Often $50,000-$100,000+ |
| Small fiberglass pool | Under 26 ft or under 400 sq. ft. | Faster installation, standard shapes | Commonly $45,000-$85,000 |
| Precast concrete plunge pool | Often 7 by 13 ft to 10 by 20 ft | Fast install, durable shell, compact sites | Typically $40,000-$75,000 |
| Above-ground pool | 8 ft round to 12 by 24 ft oval | Budget projects, removable options | About $200-$10,000 before major upgrades |
30 Small Pool Ideas for Real Backyards
1. Classic Rectangular Plunge Pool
A rectangular plunge pool is one of the most dependable small backyard pool ideas because it keeps excavation, forming, covers, tile lines, and decking straightforward. A 10 by 16 foot pool gives you 160 square feet of water, enough for cooling off, light play, and a couple of submerged benches without overwhelming a tight lot.
If budget matters, keep the depth simple, usually 4 to 5 feet, and avoid complex curves. A simple rectangle also pairs well with automatic safety covers, which can be harder and more expensive on irregular shapes.
2. Cocktail Pool With Built-In Bench Seating
A cocktail pool is built for conversation more than swimming. Think 10 by 12 feet, 12 by 16 feet, or 12 by 20 feet with bench seating along one or two sides. On compact jobs, we like benches because they make the pool more useful without increasing the shell size much.

Plan at least 3 feet of walking room on the main traffic side and 6 to 8 feet where you want lounge chairs. Without that deck space, the pool may look fine on paper but feel cramped in use.
3. Spool With Heat and Therapy Jets
A spool, or pool-spa hybrid, works well when the homeowner wants warm water, hydrotherapy, and year-round use in a smaller footprint. A common size is around 10 by 14 feet or 12 by 18 feet. Add therapy jets, a heater, and bench seating, and it becomes more like a large social spa than a tiny swimming pool.
The tradeoff is cost and mechanical complexity. Heating, jets, extra plumbing, automation, and insulated covers can move the project well above a basic plunge pool budget.
4. Narrow Side-Yard Lap Pool
If your backyard is shallow but you have a long side yard, a narrow lap pool can be a strong solution. A true lap pool is more useful around 35 to 45 feet long, but even an 8 by 30 foot design can support resistance swimming with swim jets or short exercise sets.

Many side yards are also utility corridors, so locate gas, electric, sewer, irrigation, and storm lines before design work goes too far.
5. Courtyard Pool Against the House
A courtyard pool can turn a small enclosed yard into a private outdoor room. These designs often use a 10 by 20 foot or 12 by 24 foot pool with paving on two or three sides and planting or walls on the fourth.
When a pool sits close to the house, drainage is critical. Decking should move water away from the foundation, and door thresholds need proper elevation. We also pay close attention to glare, reflected heat, and whether the pool equipment can be serviced without carrying tools through finished living spaces.
6. Prefab Fiberglass Shell
Fiberglass is popular for small pools because the shell is manufactured off-site and installed faster than many custom concrete builds. Many small fiberglass pools fall under 26 feet long or under 400 square feet, with installed costs commonly around $45,000 to $85,000 in 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
The main limitation is access. If the shell cannot be delivered by truck, lifted by crane, or maneuvered into the backyard, the savings can disappear quickly. Verify access before falling in love with a specific model.
7. Precast Concrete Plunge Pool
Precast concrete plunge pools are manufactured in a controlled setting and then placed on-site. They can be a good fit when you want a durable shell and a faster schedule than fully custom concrete. Typical installed costs often land around $40,000 to $75,000.
Like fiberglass, the big site question is placement. Crane access, overhead wires, tree canopies, driveway capacity, and side-yard width all matter.
8. Vinyl Liner Small Inground Pool
Vinyl liner pools can be the lowest-cost inground option. Some cited market ranges for 200 to 400 square feet run roughly $16,600 to $49,000, depending on size, excavation, walls, decking, and equipment.
The lifecycle tradeoff is liner replacement. A lower upfront price can still be the right decision, but homeowners should budget for periodic liner replacement and be careful with sharp objects, pets, and rough pool use.

9. Custom Gunite Pool for Odd Lots
Concrete or gunite is the most flexible option when the yard has an unusual shape, grade change, or architectural requirement. It is also where small pools can become expensive fast. Raised walls, tile, spas, ledges, retaining walls, and tight-access excavation can push a compact custom pool into the $85,000 to $120,000+ range.
Use concrete when customization is worth paying for, not just because it sounds premium.
10. Above-Ground Pool With a Real Deck
A well-detailed above-ground pool can look intentional, especially when it is partially wrapped with a wood or composite deck. Soft-sided models can cost roughly $200 to $2,500, while metal-framed above-ground pools often run about $1,800 to $10,000 before deck and site work.
The deck is where the project becomes useful. Include stairs, a gate, slip-resistant walking surfaces, and a service path to the pump and filter.
11. Stock-Tank-Style Cooling Pool
For a very small backyard or patio, a stock-tank-style pool gives you a compact soaking spot without a full inground project. It is best treated as a seasonal cooling pool, not a substitute for a properly engineered inground pool.
Use a level base, safe electrical setup, filtration, and a secure cover. Any water deeper than 24 inches may trigger barrier or permit rules in many jurisdictions, so check locally before installation.
12. Partially Raised Pool
A partially raised pool can solve grade problems and reduce excavation in some yards. It can also create built-in seating around the pool edge. Raised walls usually add structural, waterproofing, and finish costs, but they can be worth it on sloped lots.
We typically review retaining needs early because pool walls and retaining walls are not automatically the same thing. Soil pressure, drainage stone, waterproofing, and structural design need to be coordinated.
13. Deck-Level Pool With Flush Coping
A deck-level pool creates a clean, modern look where the coping and surrounding hardscape feel like one plane. It works especially well with rectangular plunge pools and courtyard pools.
The detailing has to be precise. You need slip-resistant material, proper pitch, expansion joints, and drainage that does not send dirty runoff into the pool.
14. Corner Pool
Placing the pool in a corner can preserve a larger open lawn or patio area. A 10 by 16 foot or 12 by 18 foot rectangle can work well in a back corner if setbacks allow it.
Do not push the pool so tight to the fence that maintenance becomes miserable. Leave room for brushing, cover operation, landscaping, and fence repair.
15. Pool With a Tanning Ledge
A tanning ledge, also called a Baja shelf, is usually 6 to 12 inches deep and works well for lounge chairs, toddlers under direct supervision, or simply sitting with your feet in the water. In a small pool, the ledge should be sized carefully so it does not consume the whole swimming area.
For a 12 by 24 foot pool, a 6-foot-long ledge can make sense. For a 10 by 14 foot plunge pool, a full-width ledge may feel like too much unless lounging is the main purpose.
16. Built-In Corner Steps
Corner steps are a smart way to keep the main water area open. Instead of long wedding-cake steps projecting into the pool, use compact corner steps with a handrail where needed.

17. Bench Along the Long Wall
A bench along one long wall turns a small pool into a social space. It also gives swimmers a rest point without needing a separate spa. Typical bench depths are around 18 inches below water level, with widths often around 18 to 24 inches.

In concrete pools, bench dimensions are easy to customize. In fiberglass pools, choose a shell with seating already molded into the design.
18. Swim-Jet Exercise Pool
Swim jets can turn a short pool into a resistance swimming station. This works well for homeowners who want exercise but do not have room for a 40-foot lap lane.

19. Pool-Spa Combo
A small pool with an attached spa is one of the most requested luxury backyard layouts. It gives you cool water for summer and hot water for evenings or cooler months.
The cost can rise quickly because you are adding a second water zone, heater, jets, controls, plumbing, and often raised masonry. In compact yards, the spa also reduces deck or pool area, so the layout needs discipline.
20. Perimeter Overflow Pool
A perimeter overflow or slot-edge pool can make a small pool feel more architectural. Water spills evenly into a hidden channel, creating a flat reflective surface.

21. Pool With an Automatic Safety Cover
An automatic cover can improve safety, reduce debris, limit evaporation, and help retain heat. Rectangular pools are usually the easiest and most cost-effective to cover.
The cover track, vault, drainage, and service access need to be designed with the pool. Retrofitting later can be expensive or impossible depending on the pool shape and deck.
22. Privacy-Wall Plunge Pool
Small pools often sit close to neighbors. A privacy wall, masonry screen, fence upgrade, or layered planting can make the pool feel more comfortable. Keep local fence-height rules in mind; many residential fences top out around 6 feet without special approval.

Privacy walls should not block required pool barriers, gate operation, drainage, or equipment ventilation.
23. Pergola-Shaded Pool
Shade can make a small pool far more comfortable in hot climates. A pergola over part of the deck or tanning ledge gives relief without dropping as many leaves as large overhanging trees.
Use corrosion-resistant connectors, proper footings, and electrical-rated fixtures if lighting or fans are included. Maintain clearances from the pool edge according to local electrical code requirements.
24. Natural Planting Around a Modern Pool
Planting softens a small pool and helps it feel integrated into the yard. We favor plants that are low-litter, non-invasive, and compatible with the local climate. Avoid species with aggressive roots near shells, plumbing, and deck slabs.
Leave access paths for maintenance. A pool surrounded by dense planting may photograph well, but it can become frustrating if technicians cannot reach the equipment, skimmers, or cover vault.
25. Saltwater Small Pool
A saltwater system can reduce the need to manually add chlorine, but it is still a chlorine pool. The salt chlorine generator produces chlorine from dissolved salt. It does not eliminate water testing, balancing, brushing, filter cleaning, or equipment maintenance.
Salt systems add upfront cost and require cell replacement over time. They can be a good comfort upgrade, especially for homeowners who want more automated water care.

26. Low-Maintenance Equipment Layout
In a small yard, equipment placement is often treated as an afterthought. That is a mistake. Pumps, filters, heaters, automation panels, and valves need service clearance, ventilation, drainage, and reasonable noise control.

ENERGY STAR notes that variable-speed and multi-speed pumps can reduce energy costs, run quieter, need less maintenance, and improve filtration at lower flow rates. Some efficiency programs cite up to 70% less energy use and annual savings that can exceed $350, depending on local rates and runtime.
27. Small Pool With Outdoor Kitchen
A compact pool and outdoor kitchen can share one hardscape zone if circulation is planned well. Keep grills and smokers downwind when possible, and avoid placing the cooking area where guests have to walk through wet pool traffic.
Allow at least 42 inches for main walkways, more if people will pass behind bar stools or lounge chairs. Use GFCI-protected outlets and weather-rated fixtures.
28. Pool Integrated With a Retaining Wall
On sloped lots, a retaining wall can help create the flat area needed for a small pool and deck. It can also become a seating wall, planter wall, or privacy edge.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This is not a casual upgrade. Retaining walls near pools must account for surcharge loads, drainage, waterproofing, soil type, and local engineering requirements. Poor wall drainage can damage the pool deck and structure over time.
29. Fire-and-Water Feature
A small fire bowl, linear fire feature, or raised water spillway can make a compact pool feel more finished. The best versions are restrained: one clear focal point, not a collection of competing features.
Gas lines, ignition systems, clearances, wind exposure, and service access all need planning. In many projects, lighting gives more value per dollar than oversized water features.
30. Child-Safety-First Pool Layout
The safest small pool is designed with layers of protection from the beginning. That includes a code-compliant barrier, self-closing and self-latching gates, door alarms where the house forms part of the barrier, a safety cover where appropriate, clear sightlines from the home, and active supervision.

Federal safety reporting continues to show persistent drowning risk for children, with hundreds of fatal pool- or spa-related drownings per year among children under 15 and the highest risk among children under age 5. A backyard pool design should make unauthorized access difficult even when adults are distracted.
What a Small Pool Really Costs in 2026
Small pools use less water, fewer chemicals, and less heating energy than full-size pools, but they do not eliminate fixed construction costs. Permits, layout, excavation, haul-off, electrical work, bonding, plumbing, equipment pads, inspections, fencing, and drainage still apply. That is why a pool half the size is rarely half the price.
| Project Scenario | Likely Scope | Realistic 2026 Budget |
|---|---|---|
| Budget above-ground refresh | Metal-frame pool, compact deck or stairs, basic filtration, modest landscaping | $3,000-$15,000 depending on deck, grading, and electrical work |
| Midrange prefab plunge pool | Fiberglass or precast shell, excavation, standard equipment, concrete deck, basic fence adjustments | $45,000-$85,000 for many projects |
| High-end custom courtyard spool | Concrete shell, heat, jets, premium tile, raised wall, automation, lighting, privacy hardscape | $85,000-$150,000+ depending on site complexity |
Regional pricing can shift the numbers. High-demand and high-cost markets in California, Florida, Arizona, and parts of Texas can run 15% to 30% above national averages. Some Midwest markets may run 10% to 20% below national averages, though clay soils, frost depth, drainage, and access can erase that savings quickly.
The most common budget surprises are not the pool shell. They are decking, retaining walls, fencing, automatic covers, heaters, salt systems, LED lighting, water features, swim jets, tree removal, soil stabilization, utility relocation, crane access, and excavation haul-off.
Permits, Barriers, and Safety Details You Should Plan Early
Most residential pools require permits, and many jurisdictions treat any pool over 24 inches deep as regulated. Requirements vary by city and county, but homeowners should expect review for setbacks, easements, electrical bonding, GFCI protection, drainage, fencing, gate hardware, alarms, and final inspection.
A pool barrier should fully surround the pool area unless your local code provides a specific approved alternative. Gates should be self-closing and self-latching, with latch placement that limits child access. If the home forms one side of the pool barrier, door alarms or other approved protections may be required.
Electrical work deserves special attention. Pool lights, pumps, heaters, automation, outlets, and nearby metal components must be handled under applicable electrical and pool codes. Bonding and GFCI protection are not finish details; they are core safety requirements.
Before signing a contract, confirm the following:
- Required pool permit and inspection process
- Fence height, gate swing, latch height, and barrier rules
- Setbacks from property lines, buildings, septic systems, and easements
- Electrical bonding and GFCI requirements
- Stormwater and deck drainage plan
- Equipment pad location, service clearance, and noise impact
- Access route for excavation equipment, shell delivery, or crane placement

Keep the Shape Simple
Rectangles, clean L-shapes, and standard prefab shells usually control cost better than freeform designs. They simplify excavation, covers, coping, tile, and decking. A simple 12 by 24 foot pool can feel larger and more useful than an irregular shape with awkward leftover corners.
Protect Deck Space
A small pool with no usable deck is a common design failure. Plan at least 3 feet for basic circulation, 4 feet or more for comfortable walking routes, and 6 to 8 feet where lounge chairs, dining chairs, or outdoor furniture will sit.
Use Built-In Features Carefully
Benches, ledges, corner steps, and swim jets can make a small pool more useful. Too many features can clutter the water. Pick the two or three that match the main purpose of the pool.
Plan Shade Without Creating Leaf Problems
Shade structures, umbrellas, and pergolas are often better than placing a pool directly under large trees. Trees provide comfort, but they also add leaves, pollen, roots, stains, and more skimmer cleaning.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
Some small pool work can be DIY-friendly. Most permanent inground pool work is not. The dividing line is risk: excavation, electrical work, structural walls, plumbing, waterproofing, drainage, and code compliance should be handled by qualified professionals.
Reasonable DIY Tasks
- Setting up a small seasonal soft-sided pool where allowed by local rules
- Adding movable furniture, umbrellas, planters, and storage
- Basic landscape refresh outside the pool structure and utility zones
- Routine water testing, skimming, brushing, and filter cleaning
- Installing removable safety accessories that do not replace code-required barriers
Hire a Pro For
- Inground pool design and construction
- Excavation, soil correction, and haul-off
- Electrical bonding, GFCI circuits, lighting, and automation
- Gas lines, heaters, and fire features
- Retaining walls or raised pool walls
- Drainage systems near the home or pool deck
- Permanent fencing, gates, alarms, and safety covers
A homeowner can save money by being organized: finalize the layout before work starts, make finish selections early, locate utilities, understand HOA rules, and avoid mid-project changes. Trying to save money by cutting engineering, drainage, barriers, or electrical work usually costs more later.

Bottom Line: The Best Small Pool Is the One Designed Around Use
The best small backyard pool is not automatically the smallest, cheapest, or most dramatic option. It is the one that fits the yard, passes code, gives you enough deck space, protects safety, and supports the way you actually plan to use it.
If the goal is cooling off, a plunge pool may be enough. If the goal is entertaining, a cocktail pool with benches and a generous patio may be better. If the goal is exercise, a narrow lap pool or swim-jet pool deserves attention. If the goal is budget control, an above-ground pool with a clean deck plan may beat a stripped-down inground project.
Start with the use, verify the site constraints, price the whole project, and design the pool and surrounding space together. That is how a small pool becomes a long-term backyard asset instead of an expensive object squeezed into the only open corner.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered a small backyard pool?
A small inground pool is commonly under about 12 by 24 feet, under 26 feet long, or under 400 square feet. Plunge and cocktail pools are often smaller, with common sizes like 7 by 7 feet, 10 by 6 feet, 13 by 7 feet, or 16 by 8 feet.
How much does a small inground pool cost in 2026?
Many simple small inground pools cost about $35,000 to $50,000 in 2026. Fiberglass small pools commonly run $45,000 to $85,000, precast concrete plunge pools often run $40,000 to $75,000, and custom concrete projects can exceed $120,000.
What is the cheapest small pool option?
An above-ground pool is usually the cheapest option. Soft-sided models can cost roughly $200 to $2,500, while metal-framed above-ground pools often run about $1,800 to $10,000 before adding custom decking, fencing, grading, or electrical work.
Do small pools need permits?
Usually, yes. Many jurisdictions regulate pools over 24 inches deep and may require permits, inspections, compliant barriers, gate hardware, electrical bonding, GFCI protection, and setback review. Always check local code before buying or building.
Is a plunge pool better than a cocktail pool?
A plunge pool is better for cooling off and soaking in a very compact footprint. A cocktail pool is better for social use because it usually includes more bench seating and room for several adults to gather comfortably.
Can I build a small pool myself?
Seasonal above-ground pools may be DIY-friendly if local rules allow them. Permanent inground pools, electrical work, gas heaters, retaining walls, drainage systems, safety barriers, and structural work should be handled by qualified professionals.
