How does Abu Dhabi’s project compare with the Riyadh Sphere?
The “doppelgänger” description is a headline metaphor, not an indication that the venues are equivalent. Riyadh’s Sphere is a distinct attraction in Boulevard World. Its operator, Sela, describes it as a 35-metre-tall, screen-covered structure with an indoor 360-degree theatre show. Those details describe the Riyadh attraction, not the planned Abu Dhabi venue. Sela’s Boulevard World page.
| Venue | Status and location | Published scale or capacity | Described function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sphere Abu Dhabi | Planned for Yas Island, Abu Dhabi | Up to 20,000 capacity; officials announced a US$1.7 billion construction-phase cost and expected construction completion by the end of 2029 | Planned programming includes immersive experiences, concert residencies, sporting spectacles and brand events |
| Riyadh Sphere | At Boulevard World, Riyadh | 35 metres tall, according to Sela; capacity not stated on the operator’s page | Screen-covered attraction with an indoor 360-degree theatre show |
| Las Vegas Sphere | Operating in Las Vegas | 112 metres high and 157 metres wide at its broadest point, as reported by AD Middle East in 2023; capacity 20,000, as described in the 2024 Abu Dhabi announcement | AD Middle East reported interior and exterior LED displays and haptic seats |
The measurements in this comparison are not interchangeable: height and width describe physical dimensions, while capacity describes people. The figures also come from different sources and dates. AD Middle East’s 2023 report on Las Vegas gives the dimensions and display details; they are not specifications confirmed for Abu Dhabi. AD Middle East’s 2023 account of the Las Vegas Sphere.
