No single portable workbench is the best choice for every job. The four models compared here are built around different priorities. The WORX Pegasus WX051 is a folding table that also works as a sawhorse, and its published sawhorse rating is the highest of the group. The BLACK+DECKER Workmate models are portable project centers with vises and clamps, and the WM425-A and WM425 carry the highest published worktable ratings, at 550 pounds each. The manufacturer figures below are product specifications, not independent test results, so they tell you what each bench is rated for, not which one is the most stable, durable, or pleasant to use. The right choice starts with the size of the work you do, the height you need to work at, and how you prefer to hold material.
Start with the work surface and working height
A bench that folds neatly into a car boot is no use if its top is too small or too low for the job. Compare the open work surface and the height before you compare anything else.
- WORX Pegasus WX051: a 31 by 25 inch table with a 32-inch working height, as listed by the manufacturer.
- BLACK+DECKER Workmate models: adjustable dual-height legs, which let you choose between two working heights. The manufacturer pages checked for this guide do not give numeric dimensions for the work surface or the two heights, so measure the product yourself or check the manual before you assume a fit.
To check height quickly, stand at the bench with your arms relaxed and your forearms roughly level. The bench should sit near that line, or at a height you can adjust to. A low bench forces you to bend, and a high one tires your shoulders on long cuts.
Compare folded size and carried weight
Portability depends on how much you will lift and how often you will move it. Weight is the most useful number to compare, and it varies more than the marketing suggests. The WX051 is the lightest model listed here at 30 pounds. The Workmate models range from about 28 to 40 pounds, and the folded dimensions are not stated in the manufacturer pages checked for this guide.

The WX051 has a folding joint that you must keep clear of your fingers, and its manufacturer says it does not lock shut when folded, so it has to be held securely during transport. This matters more for a heavier bench you carry alone, so plan the carry before you buy.
How to read load ratings
Load capacity is the figure most buyers search for, and it is the one most easily misread. A rating applies only to the configuration it describes, and the models here list their ratings differently.
- Identify the configuration you will use. Will you clamp work to the top as a bench, or use the unit as a sawhorse?
- Use the rating for that configuration only. The WX051 lists 300 pounds for its worktable and 1,000 pounds for its sawhorse. Those are separate ratings. Do not treat the 1,000-pound figure as the rating for the table.
- Count the full load. Add the weight of the material, the tools you leave on the bench, and the force of any clamping or pressing you do.
- Check the model number. The BLACK+DECKER pages give one stated capacity per model, and the WM425-A and WM425 are separate listings with different weights.
These are manufacturer ratings. None of the sources reviewed for this guide include independent load testing, so treat the rated figure as a ceiling to stay well below, not a target.

How each bench holds the work
Clamping is where these models differ most in use. Work that cannot be held securely is slow and unsafe to cut, sand, or glue.
WORX Pegasus WX051: quick clamps and clamp dogs
The WX051 includes two quick clamps and four clamp dogs. The manufacturer states a clamp width of 18 inches. The kit suits flat stock and panels that fit within that width. The manufacturer also says you can link additional work-support products to the bench, which can extend the work area if you need a longer support.
BLACK+DECKER Workmate WM425-A: one-handed clamps and pegs
The WM425-A has one-handed clamps, adjustable jaws for vertical clamping, and four swivel pegs. The manufacturer gives these clamping ranges:

The WM425 offers one-handed clamps, adjustable jaws, and four swivel pegs, much like the WM425-A. It is listed separately, with its own weight and no clamping ranges on the page checked for this guide, so do not assume the WM425-A ranges apply to it.

The WM425 and WM425-A are different listings with different weights. Quote the weight from the listing that matches the model number on the box.

- Cutting and sawing outdoors or on site: the WX051 is described as a folding table and sawhorse, so it covers both roles in one unit. Keep the sawhorse rating in mind when you use it as support.
- Carpentry, woodworking, and DIY at a fixed bench: the Workmate models are described as project centers and vises for these tasks, and their pegs and clamps suit holding boards and frames.
- Automotive work: the WM425-A is described for automotive work as well as woodworking. Check whether its clamping range fits the parts you handle.
- Painting and finishing: manufacturer descriptions name painting among the tasks for some of these products. The published pages do not say how each bench handles drips, overspray, or cleanup, so plan for that yourself.
Safety when folding and carrying
WORX warns users to keep their fingers clear of the folding joint while folding or carrying the Pegasus, because fingers can be pinched. The product does not lock shut when folded, so hold it securely at all times during transport. WORX also recommends standard tool precautions, including eye protection and appropriate clothing and footwear. Check the manual for the other models for their own folding and carrying warnings.
What the published specifications do not establish
All the figures above come from manufacturers’ product pages. No independent comparative testing of stability, durability, or day-to-day convenience was found for these models, so no model can be named the most stable or the most durable on the evidence available. The WM225-A weight conflict and the missing numeric dimensions for the Workmate work surfaces are gaps you can close only by checking the current manual or asking the manufacturer. Prices and stock also change, so confirm them at the point of purchase.
Buying checklist
- Measure the height you need and confirm the bench’s working height or adjustable range.
- Confirm the work surface is large enough for your typical workpiece.
- Decide which configuration you will use and read only that configuration’s rating.
- Count the weight of the material and tools you will place on the bench, and stay well below the rated figure.
- Choose the clamping system that fits your work: quick clamps and clamp dogs for panels, one-handed clamps and pegs for long or irregular pieces.
- Carry the bench the way the manual describes, with fingers clear of the folding joint.
- Match the model number on the box to the listing you read, and check the warranty terms in the manual before you buy.
If you do fixed-bench carpentry or woodworking with long boards, a Workmate-style project center fits well. If you need a table you can also use as a sawhorse, the Pegasus is the more direct match. Either way, verify the figures against the manual for your exact model.
