Flame and heat may have separate controls, blocked vents can trigger an overheat cutoff, and reset procedures or error codes are not universal. Stop using the unit and contact the manufacturer if a fault persists or returns after the manual’s checks.
Start with safe external checks
- Switch the fireplace off. If it is hot, making an unusual noise or displaying an error, stop using it while you check the manual.
- Check the power supply. Make sure the plug is seated and the outlet works. Check the fireplace’s main switch and power control. One product manual specifies a standard 120 V outlet; follow that only if it applies to your model and region, rather than treating it as a universal requirement. See the product manual.
- Check the settings. Flame effect and heat may be controlled independently. Confirm the heater is enabled and the thermostat is set above the room temperature.
- Keep vents clear. If cleaning accessible air inlets or outlets, switch off and unplug the unit first. Do not open the appliance or inspect internal wiring.
These checks do not replace the manufacturer’s instructions. Control layouts, reset methods and fault-code meanings vary by model.
Flame effect works, but there is no heat
Check the heater and thermostat
Turn on the heater separately from the flame effect, if your fireplace has separate controls. Set the thermostat above the current room temperature; otherwise, the heater may not call for heat.
Check for flame-only or demo mode
Some fireplaces can show flames without heating. Confirm that the unit is not in flame-only or demo mode. The Dimplex XHD23 support page describes demo mode on that product as disabling heater and thermostat functions. Do not assume that another model uses the same mode or controls.

The heater stops, blows cool air or shuts off
Allow for a cool-down cycle
A fan may blow cool air during a cool-down cycle. The product manual documents this behavior for its model, so cool air by itself does not establish that the heater has failed. Check your own manual for what to expect.
Check airflow and follow the model’s reset instructions
Blocked air inlets or outlets can cause an overheat cutout. Switch off and unplug the fireplace before clearing accessible vents, then let the unit cool and follow the reset procedure and timing in its manual. Reset guidance differs: Dimplex technical support describes a five-minute main-power-off step for the referenced support case, while another manual specifies a different cooling and reset procedure. Neither interval should be applied to every fireplace.

If the unit overheats or shuts off again after the prescribed steps, discontinue use and contact the manufacturer. Repeated cutouts need more than another generic reset attempt.
There is no flame effect, but heat works
Check the flame-effect setting on the remote or control panel. If the manual permits it, switch the unit off and back on using its instructions. If the flames remain absent, consult the manual or contact the manufacturer; the Dimplex XHD23 support page directs users with persistent product problems to customer support.

The remote does not work
- Check the batteries and replace them if needed.
- Follow the manual’s instructions for aiming the remote, button presses and signal path.
- If the remote still fails, the receiver may be defective; Dimplex identifies receiver replacement as a possible service need in its FAQ and documentation.
Only use a replacement remote confirmed for your fireplace’s exact make and model. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish universal remote compatibility.
An error appears, the fireplace makes unusual noise, or the fault returns
Look up the code in the manual for the exact model. A code’s meaning on one fireplace cannot safely be transferred to another. If the manual directs you to customer service, the code remains unresolved, the unit makes unusual noise or the same fault returns, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider as appropriate.

When to stop troubleshooting
- The fireplace repeatedly overheats or shuts itself off.
- An error remains unresolved after the manual’s specified steps.
- There is unusual noise or another persistent fault.
- The manual says to seek service or the problem continues after its checks.
Do not open the appliance or attempt internal electrical repairs based on generic advice. Use the manufacturer’s service guidance; if a part is needed, verify that it is approved for the exact model before replacing anything.
