When a Samsung washer never admits water, the cause is most often outside the machine: a water valve that is not fully open, an inlet hose that is kinked or connected to the wrong tap, debris caught in the inlet filter, or a drain hose set up incorrectly. Samsung’s official guidance tells you to check these external points first, to read any error code on the display, and to request service if the washer still does not fill afterward.
Is a slow or light fill actually a fault?
Not always. Samsung states that its high-efficiency (HE) washers “use significantly less water than previous generations while still getting your clothes clean” (Samsung Support US, “Water fill issues with Samsung washing machines”). A washer that fills less than an older machine did may be working as designed, so do not judge the fill level against a previous appliance.
Some cycles also sense the load before choosing how much water to admit. Samsung’s US support page describes a 2–5 minute weighing period before the fill amount is selected. The page does not state a year, so treat that figure as Samsung’s general description rather than a dated specification. A pause at the start of a cycle is therefore not, on its own, evidence of a failure.
The symptoms that do warrant action are a washer that never admits water, one that keeps filling without stopping, and one that shows a fill-related error. The steps below address those cases.

Check the supply side first
Work through these checks in order. Each one is quick, and most are visible without removing any panels.
- Note the symptom and display. Record whether the washer never fills, starts filling after a delay, or seems to use too little water. Note any error code on the display. Some models use a blinking-light pattern rather than a text code, so record the pattern exactly.
- Confirm power and the door. Make sure the washer is switched on and the door is fully closed. Samsung’s US guidance for washers that will not start or fill also points to the door latch and the Child Lock setting, so check both before going further.
- Open both water valves fully. Locate the hot and cold valves behind the washer and turn each one to fully open. A valve that is only partly open can limit flow enough to look like a fill fault.
- Inspect both inlet hoses. Look for kinks, pinching behind the machine, cracks, bulges, or leaks. Confirm each hose is on the correct tap. If a hose is damaged, replace it with one that fits both the washer and your household connections. Samsung US guidance says not to use Flood Safe hoses.
- Check the inlet filters. Follow the steps in the inlet filter section below if the valves and hoses look normal.
- Check the drain hose. Follow the drain hose section below, because an incorrectly installed drain hose can also produce fill-related errors.
- Power-cycle once. Unplug the washer or switch off its circuit breaker for one minute, then restore power and run a cycle.
- Escalate if needed. If the washer still does not fill, or the same error returns, follow the service guidance below.
Hoses and valves
Hoses and valves are the most common external cause, and they are the first thing Samsung asks you to check. Confirm the valves are fully open and the hoses are connected to the correct inlets. A hose that looks intact on the outside can still be restricted, so if you suspect a hidden kink, disconnect it only after closing the water valve.
Hot and cold connections
Do not assume a Cold cycle needs only the cold line. Samsung US states that some temperature settings can still call for the hot line under certain conditions, and that an absent or swapped hot line may cause an error. Connection arrangements also vary by model and market. Samsung UK notes a model exception to its general hot and cold instructions, so check the connection diagram in your washer’s manual rather than relying on a general rule.

If you find that a hot connection is missing or that the lines have been swapped, and you are not certain how the existing plumbing is configured, have a licensed plumber confirm the arrangement. This is particularly worth doing in a laundry that has been recently altered, where a supply may have been capped or rerouted.

Samsung identifies debris in the water supply as a cause of blocked inflow. Debris can collect at the washer connection and restrict water entering the machine. Samsung UK guidance describes removing and rinsing a mesh filter at the inlet, then reinstalling it and checking the connections for leaks. Not every model has a separately removable screen, so follow the procedure in your manual.
Turn off both water valves before you disconnect any hose or examine a filter. Reopen the valves slowly after reconnecting, then check every joint for drips. Do not force a filter out of its housing.

Drain hose
Samsung’s US fill troubleshooting asks you to check that the drain hose is not kinked and is installed at the insertion depth and height specified for your model. The hose should not form an airtight seal with the standpipe. Because installation measurements vary by model and market, use the figures in your washer’s manual rather than a general dimension. Do not remove the retaining screw on the back of the washer to adjust the hose.
Power reset
A single power cycle clears a transient fault after you have corrected a basic problem. Samsung’s error-code guidance recommends unplugging the washer or switching off its breaker for one minute, then restoring power and trying a cycle. Treat this as one reset step after the supply checks, not as a repair. If the fault returns after the reset, the cause still needs to be found.

Samsung US groups the following codes under “Not filling error” in its washing machine error-code guide:
- 4C
- 1 4C
- nF
- 4E
The guide defines the category as “Water is not entering the washer correctly.” Its suggested checks are hose connections, hose kinks, open valves, drain hose installation, power, and inlet debris, which match the sequence above. The code list is a clue about where to look, not a diagnosis of a specific component. Codes and their display behaviour vary between models and markets, so confirm the meaning in the error guide for your exact model before acting on it.

Stop troubleshooting and request service in two situations. The first is when the washer still does not fill after the external checks, or the same error returns after a power reset. Samsung directs users to its Support Center for these cases. The second is when the washer fills continuously. Samsung’s support guidance for that symptom says to turn off the water valves and request service.
Do not diagnose an internal part from the symptom alone. A failed inlet valve, pressure sensor, or control board can produce a no-fill result, but nothing in Samsung’s general guidance lets you confirm any of them without model-specific testing. Leave those diagnoses to a qualified technician or Samsung service.
Safety when working behind the washer
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting hoses or cleaning an inlet filter. After reconnecting, reopen the supply slowly and check every joint for leaks. If you see an unusual leak, water that keeps running, or you are unsure about the wiring or plumbing, stop and contact model-specific support or a qualified technician.
