Plants can make a garden more welcoming to spiders by providing shelter, varied places to hunt, and supports for webs. Spiders, in turn, eat many insects—including some that damage vegetables and ornamentals—though they are generalist predators, not selective pest-control agents. You do not need a special “spider plant”: a varied, locally suitable planting and a few undisturbed habitat features are the useful starting points.
How spiders can help in a garden
Spiders are predators, and many hunt a broad range of insects. Depending on the species and what is available, their prey can include insects that feed on garden plants. Their presence contributes to natural pest regulation, but it does not amount to reliable control of a specific pest on a specific crop.
There is no broadly applicable measured figure for how many garden pests spiders eliminate. Their impact depends on the spider community, prey availability, season, and whether predators reach the plants where pests are causing trouble. Delaware Cooperative Extension cautions that natural enemies may not disperse to the plants that need protection (The New Companion Planting: Adding Diversity to the Garden).
Spiders also eat insects that gardeners may value. They can catch pollinators such as bees, as well as other beneficial insects. The practical aim is to support a diverse garden community, not to assume every spider encounter benefits every plant.

Why plants and garden structure matter
Vegetation supports spiders in several ways: it offers cover, creates different hunting and foraging sites, and provides places to attach webs. Plants also sustain insects that can become spider prey. A varied garden therefore offers more kinds of habitat than a uniformly bare or closely cut space.
Think in layers and features rather than looking for one magic species. Flowering plants can provide resources for insects; shrubs and trees add height and branching structure; ground cover, mulch, leaf litter, rocks, and logs create shelter near the soil. NSW Environment and Heritage describes these features as useful habitat for spiders and notes that plants support the insects they eat (Spiders in Sydney).

What to plant and retain
Choose plants suited to your region
Where possible, use a mix of locally suitable native plants. Washington State University Extension explains that native plants have closer affinities with native insects and that diverse local plantings can support beneficial arthropods. That advice is regional, not a universal species list: check a native-plant resource for your area, and choose plants that suit your climate, soil, and garden conditions.
Include a range of forms and flowering times where practical. A mix of flowering plants, small shrubs, and trees can support insects and create varied shelter and potential web sites. Diversity is a habitat strategy; it does not guarantee fewer pests on a particular vegetable or ornamental.

Use companion flowers and herbs for indirect support
In a vegetable garden, sweet alyssum is a compact, low-growing, long-season flower that can be grown from seed and is used to attract and support beneficial insects. Those insects may become prey for spiders, but sweet alyssum is not established here as a spider-specific attractant.
Delaware Cooperative Extension also discusses basil, coriander, rosemary, lavender, parsley, borage, dill, and chives as herbs that have attracted natural enemies or repelled herbivores in at least some studies. Effects vary, and these findings are not specific to spiders. Pick herbs that fit your cooking, growing conditions, and planting plan rather than expecting a guaranteed pest outcome.

Keep some cover in place
Where it is practical and safe, retain a few less-disturbed places: leaf litter beneath shrubs, mulch, logs, rocks, cover crops, or other ground cover. These features offer shelter and can provide overwintering habitat. You need not let every bed become untidy; even a small sheltered edge or patch can add structure to an otherwise exposed garden.

Routine broad-spectrum outdoor pesticide use can remove spiders as well as their insect food. Washington State University Extension identifies regular broad-spectrum synthetic pesticide use as a major impediment to beneficial arthropods, while NSW Environment and Heritage notes that pesticides can reduce both spiders and prey. Avoiding routine broad-spectrum applications helps preserve the food web you are trying to support.

If a pest problem requires action, identify the pest and consider targeted, locally appropriate options rather than applying a broad-spectrum product across the garden by default. Follow the product label and local guidance.
Set realistic expectations and use sensible caution
More vegetation and cover may make a garden more suitable for spiders, but it cannot guarantee that spiders will settle in a particular spot or suppress a crop pest. The results depend on local species, habitat, prey, and garden conditions. One regional illustration—not a general benchmark—is Washington State University Extension’s report of more than 800 spider species in Washington and 20 to 25 species in an average pesticide-free garden there.
Most spiders observed openly during the day are unlikely to bite or cause lasting harm if they do, according to UC IPM. Risk varies by species and location, so avoid handling unidentified spiders and seek local medical guidance if a bite causes concerning symptoms (Common Garden Spiders).
