Usually, no—not as a way to make hibiscus bloom or lower soil pH. Spent coffee grounds are not a dependable soil acidifier, and the available extension guidance does not establish that they improve hibiscus flowering. If you want to reuse grounds, compost them first and use them modestly. For hibiscus, focus instead on rich, well-drained soil and suitable warmth.
Do coffee grounds help hibiscus bloom?
There is no established hibiscus-specific benefit in the cited extension guidance. Grounds are not a proven bloom booster, and they should not replace basic care such as suitable growing conditions or a fertilizer plan based on the plant’s needs.
Hibiscus flower-bud development depends in part on warmth. The University of Minnesota Extension’s hibiscus guidance also calls for a rich, well-drained soil mixture. Coffee grounds are not shown to meet those needs or improve flowering.
Will spent coffee grounds make hibiscus soil more acidic?
Do not rely on them to change soil pH. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes brewed coffee grounds as having a pH “between 6.5 to 6.8,” close to neutral, and Nebraska Extension also advises against using grounds to lower soil pH. These figures concern spent or brewed grounds, not fresh, unused coffee; acidity claims about brewed coffee should not be transferred to grounds left after brewing.

If you suspect the soil is too acidic or alkaline, get the soil tested before amending it. Penn State Extension recommends soil fertility testing to guide decisions about soil conditions and amendments.
How to reuse spent grounds more safely
Compost them first
Composting is the more cautious general-use option. Nebraska Extension recommends composting grounds before incorporating them into soil, and Washington State University Extension notes that composted grounds provide nutrients when applied. Treat them as one modest compost ingredient, not as a complete fertilizer prescription for hibiscus.

If using grounds on the soil surface
Fine grounds can compact, restricting air and moisture movement. Nebraska Extension advises using no more than a half-inch as a top dressing and covering it with leaves or shredded bark. That is a general gardening limit, not a hibiscus-specific recommendation or a way to correct soil pH.
Uncomposted grounds also have potential downsides: Nebraska Extension warns that microbes breaking them down can use nitrogen, while WSU Extension says fresh grounds can be phytotoxic to some plants and cautions against using them in seed-growing areas. Avoid applying a thick layer around the plant.

Are coffee grounds a fertilizer for hibiscus?
Not by themselves. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources reports that grounds contain “about 2% nitrogen by volume,” attributing that figure to studies by Oregon State University. Nebraska Extension notes that grounds add nutrients gradually as they decompose. Neither point establishes a complete feeding plan or a suitable amount for hibiscus.
Do not add nitrogen automatically in response to weak flowering. UCANR notes that excess nitrogen may favor foliage at the expense of flowers and fruit. If you think the plant needs nutrients, use soil-test results and appropriate hibiscus care guidance to decide what, if anything, to apply.

Choose between composting grounds and skipping them
| Option | What it can do | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Compost spent grounds first | A cautious way to reuse grounds as one component of compost; composted grounds can provide nutrients as they decompose. | It does not prove a hibiscus-specific flowering benefit, correct soil pH, or supply a complete fertilizer plan. |
| Skip grounds and address hibiscus needs directly | Keeps attention on suitable warmth, rich well-drained soil, and soil-test-guided amendments. | It does not diagnose a soil problem without testing. |
