Why You Should Add Sand to Your Fire Pit—If Its Manual Calls for It

Add sand only when the manual for your specific fire pit calls for it. A wood-burning bowl, gas burner, and masonry pit have different material and safety requirements.

Sand belongs in a fire pit only when the instructions for that specific pit call for it. For one Hampton Bay wood-burning fire bowl, the manual specifies a sand layer to help protect the bowl from corrosive ash and radiate heat upward. That is a model-specific recommendation—not a universal rule for wood, gas, or masonry fire pits.

Why a wood-burning fire bowl may need sand

The Hampton Bay FP20902 manual says sand can help guard the bowl against the corrosive nature of ashes and help radiate heat upward. That is the manufacturer’s stated reason for this model; it is not a guarantee of longer bowl life or a quantified performance result.

For that fire bowl, the manual directs owners to add “a 1–1.5 in. layer of sand or about 5 lbs.” before use. Follow the manual for your own fire pit rather than transferring this depth or weight to another model. The instructions do not establish that play sand, silica sand, or other grades are interchangeable. Read the Hampton Bay FP20902 manual.

Choose the right approach for your type of fire pit

Fire-pit type What the guidance says What to do
Wood-burning bowl The Hampton Bay FP20902 manual specifies 1–1.5 inches or about 5 lb of sand and explains its intended benefits. Use sand only if your model’s manual calls for it, and follow its specified material and amount.
Gas fire pit Firegear’s instructions warn that excess media can interfere with gas flow, and dusty sand or media may block weep holes. The instructions also address drainage and ventilation. Use only the media and placement specified for the gas appliance. Do not apply wood-bowl advice to a burner or enclosure. See Firegear’s installation and operating instructions.
Built-in or masonry pit Sand or mineral earth may be used at the bottom of a recreational pit, while construction guidance describes sand or processed gravel in a prepared base and addresses drainage. Treat this as construction guidance for the base, not as a recommendation to line every finished fire bowl. Polycor also cautions that high heat can crack or spall granite blocks and recommends keeping fires small. Keizer Fire District guidelines and Polycor’s Round Fire Pit Installation Guide cover these construction contexts.

How to decide whether to add sand

  1. Identify the exact appliance. Confirm whether it is a wood-burning bowl, gas burner, or built-in masonry pit; the recommendations are not interchangeable.
  2. Read its manual before adding material. Check whether sand is required or permitted, what material to use, where to place it, and how much to add.
  3. For a gas pit, preserve the designed gas path and drainage. Too much media can inhibit gas flow, and dust or sand may obstruct weep holes. Follow the appliance’s media, ventilation, and drainage instructions.
  4. For a constructed pit, follow the build details. Base material and drainage guidance applies to the construction, not automatically to the fire bowl above it.

Sand is not a universal way to put out a fire

Local fire authorities do not give one universal instruction about using sand or dirt to extinguish an outdoor fire. The City of Edmonton says to keep a hose, bucket of water, or shovel with dirt or sand nearby and to leave only when no heat, glow, or flame remains. Queensland Fire Department instead says not to use sand or dirt because a fire can stay hot and injure someone, and directs people to use water. Fairfax County lists dirt, sand, a water barrel, or a garden hose as examples of extinguishing equipment for the covered uses and says portable fireplaces should remain attended until extinguished.
