Most Cabrio washer problems can be narrowed down in a few minutes if you start with the right information: your washer’s complete model number, the exact error code or symptom, and the owner’s manual written for that model. Cabrio is a product name that covers several washer models and control platforms, so a code list, reset sequence, or replacement part that fits one machine may not fit yours. Use the checks below to rule out the simple causes first, then decide whether the fault needs model-specific documentation or a qualified technician.
Start with your exact model number
Before you interpret a code or buy a part, find the complete model number on the washer’s label and write it down. Whirlpool’s manuals page offers a model-number search that returns the owner’s manual and related literature for that specific machine. The owner’s manual is the authority for your washer’s display, cycle behavior, installation requirements, and parts.
Whirlpool’s general top-load error-code page warns that its code list may not include every code for a given model. If a code on that page does not match your display, or the meaning seems wrong for your cycle, look it up in the manual for your model rather than assuming the general definition applies.
Check the easy causes first
Most fill, drain, and balance complaints trace back to something you can see without tools. Work through these before you open the washer or order anything.

- Hoses: Make sure the hot and cold supply hoses are connected, not kinked, and actually delivering water.

The display name for a given condition can differ by model, so match the wording on your screen to your manual, not to a table like this one. The published sources reviewed do not state a meaning for the “drn” indication beyond its association with drain problems, so confirm it in your model’s manual.
Symptom-led troubleshooting
Washer will not fill
Start with the easy causes above. Whirlpool’s owner’s manual lists supply hoses that are connected and flowing, both faucets open, clear inlet screens, and hoses that are not kinked. If those are all correct and the washer still reports a fill problem, the next step is the model-specific documentation rather than a guess about the valve.
The technician sheet for one platform also asks whether water is siphoning out through an incorrectly installed drain hose. This is a useful check on any machine with a fill-time complaint, because a drain that keeps emptying the tub can make the washer appear to be filling slowly. Its specific hose dimensions apply only to that documented platform, so check them against your own installation instructions.

Lid will not lock or unlock
For the F5E2 and F5E3 indications, the first step is to look for an object caught under the lid or sitting on top of it. A towel corner, a loose item, or a piece of clothing can stop the latch from engaging or releasing.
If nothing is blocking the lid, the technician sheet points to interference at the lock and striker, detergent or lint buildup as a possible impediment on that platform, and a dedicated lid-lock diagnostic test. A code alone does not establish that the latch assembly is defective. Do not bypass the lid lock to get the washer running. If the basic obstruction checks do not clear the fault, or it returns, stop and use qualified service or the repair instructions for your exact model.
Washer will not drain
Start with the drain hose. The owner’s manual says to remove any clogs from the hose and describes installation cautions for the covered model, including not sealing the standpipe opening. A hose that is kinked, too low, too high, or jammed with debris is the most common and cheapest explanation for a drain problem.

- A clogged drain hose or pump
- An obstructed tub sump
- A drain height that is too great
- A compromised pressure hose
- A pump that is not running
These are possibilities to check, not a guarantee that a new pump will fix the problem. Work through the drain path before you consider the pump, and confirm the exact model first.
Out of balance or not spinning
For an out-of-balance indication, Whirlpool’s guidance is to let the washer’s correction routine run. If the washer stops, redistribute the load, close the lid, and restart as the display directs. Avoid washing one heavy item by itself, and do not add wet items or extra water, since either can make the imbalance worse.
A washer that will not spin may have a fault that is not related to balance at all. On the platform described in the technician sheet, an F7E1 basket-speed fault can come from a locked rotor, drive or harness problems, a shifter issue, a calibration problem, motor or capacitor issues, a loose belt or pulley, or load distribution. Some of these need electrical testing or disassembly, which is outside what an owner should attempt. Calibration also applies only to the platform in that sheet, so do not assume a calibration routine exists on your machine.
Excess suds, overload, and other displayed conditions
Use HE detergent and measure it for the load size. Too much detergent is the most common cause of a suds condition. For an overload indication, remove some items and follow the displayed restart procedure. Do not reset by repeatedly pressing buttons until the code clears, since that can hide the cause rather than fix it.

Reset carefully and know when to stop
The power-off reset is the one reset the cited owner’s manual describes in detail: for the F6E2 or F6E3 communication error, remove power for five minutes. Do not apply that reset to every code. If a code returns after you have completed the basic checks for that code, the washer is telling you that the cause is still present.
Stop troubleshooting and arrange service if:
- The same code returns after the checks for that code have been completed.
- The diagnosis would require electrical testing, live voltage measurement, or disassembly of the cabinet or drive system.
- The manual for your model tells you to contact service.
- You notice burning smells, scorching, sparks, or water leaking near electrical parts.
Repair parts: buy only after a diagnosis
A model-compatible lid-lock assembly is a plausible replacement only after the lid-lock checks above have failed to clear the fault. A model-compatible drain pump is a conditional repair as well, and only after the drain path has been checked. Published Whirlpool material for these faults does not identify a universal part number, so compatibility depends on your full model number. Do not replace an assembly solely because an error code appeared.
Before buying any component, confirm the complete model number, compare it to the parts information in your model’s manual or Whirlpool’s product documents, and check that the listing matches your model exactly.
DIY repair versus service
Choose between repairing and calling service by weighing five things: how confident you are in the diagnosis, whether a part is confirmed for your exact model, the skills and electrical safety the repair requires, the total cost and service availability in your area, and the washer’s age and overall condition. The published Whirlpool material reviewed establishes model-specific documentation and service paths, but it does not provide repair prices, success rates, or a repair-versus-replace cutoff. Make that decision using those five factors rather than a fixed rule.

Electrical safety
The owner’s manual warns that electrical shock can cause death or fire. Plug the washer into a grounded three-prong outlet, keep the ground prong intact, and do not use an adapter or extension cord. Do not perform electrical tests on a washer that is plugged in, and do not use the technician sheet’s internal diagnostic tests as casual home instructions. That sheet is written for service technicians.
