Place the rear pair as a matched left and right set, either beside your main seating position or slightly behind it, with both speakers facing the same way. Height and angle should follow the guide for your exact speaker model, because manufacturers publish different figures and some of their advice is regional or dated.
Start with the main listening seat
Treat the seat you use most as the reference point. The two rear speakers should sit symmetrically around it, one on the left and one on the right, so that the pair creates a sense of sound around you rather than a single rear source. Placing both speakers together directly behind the listener defeats that separation, which is the whole purpose of a rear pair.
Sonos describes the goal in plain terms in its guidance on surround sound: “Place your surround speakers behind and to the left and right of your usual listening position.” Samsung’s home-theater guidance for Hong Kong, by contrast, places the surrounds to the side of the listening position. Both are valid starting points for the same underlying idea of left-right separation around the seat.
Beside the seat or behind it
Beside the seat
Placing the pair to each side of the sofa or chair is the simplest arrangement when the room is narrow or the seating sits against a wall. Keep the two speakers at similar heights and aim them the same way. Samsung notes that for its soundbar systems, speakers placed to the sides can feel more immersive than speakers placed behind when the system is using 2.0 processing or when the content itself has only two channels. That remark is specific to Samsung’s own setup, not a general rule for every brand.

Behind the seat
A position behind the listener and slightly to each side is consistent with Sonos’ general guidance. This works well when the sofa is set away from the walls and there is room behind it. Keep the speakers spread apart rather than close together so the left and right channels remain distinct.
Height and angle
Samsung’s Hong Kong home-theater guide recommends mounting surround speakers 60 to 90 cm above ear level and aiming them slightly downward. That figure is the most specific height guidance in the manufacturer documents reviewed for this article, but it has two qualifications. First, the page is written for products in Hong Kong. Second, its body text states that the content was last updated on 13 March 2014, even though the page header displays a later date. Treat the height as a useful starting point and confirm it against the manual that came with your speakers.

Sonos and Sony guidance covered here does not give a single comparable height, so do not assume that the Samsung figure applies to another brand. If your speakers include a wall-mount bracket or a stand, use the mounting provisions the manufacturer describes, since the documents reviewed do not establish that a particular stand or mount is necessary.
Placement by room layout
- Space beside the sofa: Place one speaker on each side of the main seat. Keep the pair at a similar height and orientation. This is the arrangement Samsung’s home-theater guidance describes.
- Space behind the sofa: Place the pair behind the listener but spread to the left and right, as Sonos recommends. Avoid stacking them in the centre behind the seat.
- Tight or obstructed room: Choose the placement that keeps a clear path between each speaker and the main unit where the system requires it. Sonos specifies line of sight for its portable surround setup. For the Sony systems discussed below, keep the speakers away from nearby walls and wireless routers when addressing signal interruptions.
- Mostly stereo or two-channel material on a soundbar: If the soundbar is set to a two-channel processing mode, side placement may suit the content better than placement behind the listener, according to Samsung’s explanation of its own system.
Keeping the wireless link stable
Distance from routers and walls
For the Sony systems named in its wireless surround troubleshooting guidance, Sony recommends keeping the control box and speakers at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from a wireless LAN router. The same guidance warns that walls blocking two sides of a wireless speaker can degrade communication. Where a speaker sits near a wall, Sony’s examples suggest moving it away from the wall or turning it about 45 degrees when it sits near a corner. These steps apply to the models named in that article, not to every wireless speaker.

Line of sight
Sonos portable surrounds need to be in the same room as the home-theater product and within line of sight of it. The same Sonos system uses positioning technology that detects and assigns left and right placement when the speakers return to surround position, so keep the speakers in place once they are set up and avoid moving them into a different room.
Wi-Fi band and connection settings
Sony also describes a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band and a stable-connection setting for the systems named in its article. Use these only as the manufacturer describes them for your model. They are troubleshooting options, not universal setup requirements.

What kind of wireless link your kit uses
“Wireless rear speakers” can describe several different link arrangements, so check which one your kit uses before deciding where to place the speakers. The table compares the three arrangements covered by the manufacturer documents reviewed.
| System | How the rear speakers connect | Placement requirement stated | Scope of the statement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony wireless surround (BRAVIA Theatre / HT-A9 family) | Wireless link to the control box; the configuration requires two speakers of the same model | Position the pair as the rear pair; keep at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from a wireless LAN router; avoid walls on two sides | Named Sony families in Sony’s current support guidance |
| Samsung wireless rear kit for a compatible soundbar | Receiver module connects wirelessly to the soundbar; the two rear speakers connect to the module by wire | Side placement may feel more immersive for 2.0 processing or two-channel content | Samsung’s explanation for products sold in Canada; kit compatibility depends on the soundbar model |
| Sonos portable surrounds | Wireless link to a supported Sonos home-theater product | Same room as the home-theater product; line of sight; positioned behind and to the left and right of the listening position | Supported Sonos configurations only; the documents do not say whether the same rules apply to other Sonos models |
The Samsung kit shows why the word “wireless” needs care. Only the link between the soundbar and the receiver module is wireless; the speaker wires still run from the module to the rear speakers, so the cable routing matters even in a wireless kit.

When the surround effect is weak
If the rear speakers seem quiet or the effect is hard to notice, the material may not contain distinct rear-channel sound. A two-channel source can remain two-channel depending on the soundbar’s processing. Work through the following checks before moving the speakers again:
- Play a known multichannel test track or a film with clear surround cues, rather than stereo music.
- Check the audio format and processing settings on the soundbar or main unit, since these affect what reaches the rear speakers.
- Confirm in the product manual that the rear speakers are paired and assigned to the rear position.
- Only then move the speakers, and make one change at a time so you can tell which change helped.
If sound skips or becomes noisy, first relocate the speakers and the control unit to reduce obstacles and distance. Where a manufacturer names an interference source, such as a router or a device that causes electromagnetic interference, move that device as well.
Before buying a rear speaker kit
Confirm that a rear kit is compatible with your exact soundbar model before purchase. Samsung states that the compatible rear speaker kit depends on the soundbar model and recommends checking the manual. A kit that suits one soundbar may not work with another, even from the same brand.
What these recommendations cover
The guidance in this article comes from manufacturer support documents rather than a controlled listening test. Samsung’s height figure is from its Hong Kong home-theater page, whose body text shows an older update date. Samsung’s rear-kit explanation applies to products sold in Canada. Sony’s distance and interference figures apply to the named families in its article, and Sonos guidance applies to supported Sonos configurations. For final placement and pairing, use the manual for your exact rear-speaker and soundbar models.
