The documented route is specialist, made-to-order shielding. BriTec’s Radiation Protection Equipment catalogue, in its Nuclear Medicine section, lists a custom lead-lined refrigerator and freezer shield that is built to fit an appliance the customer specifies. You supply the fridge or freezer size and specification, and the supplier builds the shield around it. The catalogue does not give prices, lead times, delivery areas or ordering terms, so a quote request is the only way to get those details.
What the BriTec listing actually offers
The catalogue entry describes the product as a lead-lined shield designed to accommodate fridges and freezers to the customer’s requirements. Its wording is: “Lead lined shield to accommodate fridges and freezers to customers requirements.” The same listing states that lead shielding is “Available from 3mm to 50mm lead shielding” and that cooling fans are incorporated “to assist cooling and reduce potential overheating.”
Read those statements carefully. They describe a shield for a refrigerator or freezer that the customer supplies, not a finished appliance with lead built into its walls. The 3 mm to 50 mm range is a product specification, and the listing does not say which thickness suits a particular source, room or facility.
Why this is a made-to-order product
A standard fridge is designed for food storage and domestic use. A radiation shield for a fridge has to account for the appliance’s dimensions, the weight of the lead, the airflow the compressor needs, and the location where the unit will sit. Because the catalogue asks the customer to specify the appliance, the shield is effectively fitted to a particular unit rather than picked from a shelf.

That is why the search for “lead-lined fridges” usually leads to a specialist supplier rather than a retailer. It also means the purchase is a specification exercise. The listing does not establish that BriTec sells a complete, pre-lined refrigerator as a consumer appliance.
How to request a quote
- Measure the refrigerator or freezer you intend to shield, including external height, width and depth, and note the door swing and clearance needed for ventilation and access.
- Write down the radiation context: the type of source, the intended use, and the room or facility where the unit will be installed. Your radiation protection adviser or the facility’s radiation protection supervisor should confirm this.
- Contact BriTec through its Radiation Protection Equipment catalogue to request a quote for a custom refrigerator or freezer shield, and state the appliance dimensions and the shielding specification you need.
- Ask the supplier, in writing, for the price, lead time, delivery coverage, installation requirements and any conditions on ordering. These terms are not in the catalogue entry.
- Before you accept a design, have a qualified radiation protection professional confirm that the lead thickness and layout suit your actual application.
Questions to settle before ordering
- Fit and installation: Will the shield be fitted around a separately supplied appliance, and what installation work does it need?
- Thickness: Which value within the 3 mm to 50 mm range is appropriate for your source and use? Do not choose a thickness from the catalogue range alone.
- Cooling: The listing notes cooling fans. Confirm how much airflow, clearance and power the configuration needs, and what happens if the fans fail.
- Access and maintenance: Check how the unit will be serviced, cleaned and opened, and whether the shield limits access to the compressor or door seal.
- Facility requirements: Confirm any local rules that apply to storing or using shielded equipment in a controlled area.
What a lead-lined fridge does not do
Do not treat a lead-lined refrigerator as a shelter from a nuclear explosion. The supplier material describes radiation-protection equipment for housing a fridge or freezer. It does not claim blast or fallout shelter performance, and it should not be used for that purpose.

The fridge scene in the 2008 film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a popular reference point for the idea, but a film scene is not evidence that such a unit is safe or suitable for any real use.

The catalogue entry does not state prices, lead times, shipping areas or whether BriTec ships outside a particular country. It also does not show a checkout route, stock status or a delivery promise. Treat any of those details as something to confirm directly with the supplier.

The catalogue entry does not give a publication date in the material available, so ask BriTec to confirm that the specification you are reading is current.
