CFLs have not vanished, but they have largely been displaced by LED bulbs in U.S. homes. LEDs use less electricity, last longer and contain no mercury, while federal efficiency standards now set levels that widely available LEDs can meet but CFLs cannot. If you still have a CFL, it is generally safe to use while intact; when it burns out, an appropriate LED is the straightforward replacement.
What happened to CFL bulbs?
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were an important step beyond incandescent bulbs: they used less electricity, and their bent fluorescent tubing made the technology fit common household fixtures. The spiral CFL was invented in 1976, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Some CFLs have a ballast built into the bulb; others use a separate ballast.
CFLs did not all perform alike. Earlier models could take time to reach full brightness, and fit, performance and quality varied by product and fixture. Those drawbacks should not be assumed to describe every CFL. The larger change was that LEDs improved and became widely available, offering lower electricity use, longer service life and no mercury.
How far have U.S. households moved from CFLs?
U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) figures from the 2024 Residential Energy Consumption Survey show the shift. The figures describe household use, not exclusive use unless the wording says “all indoor lighting.”

| Measure | Finding |
|---|---|
| Households reporting LED use for indoor lighting in 2024 | 90% (EIA, published March 23, 2026) |
| Households using LEDs for all indoor lighting in 2024 | 37% (EIA, published March 23, 2026) |
| Households using CFLs for all indoor lighting in 2024 | 2% (EIA, published March 23, 2026) |
| Households mostly using CFLs for indoor lighting | 32% in 2015; 7% in 2024 (EIA, published March 23, 2026) |
So the 90% LED figure does not mean nine in ten households used LEDs exclusively. Many households use a mix of bulb types.
Did the government ban CFL bulbs?
No single U.S. law required households to switch to CFLs, and the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act did not require compact fluorescent use. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that the law established efficiency requirements for certain common household bulbs; it did not ban every incandescent bulb, and some specialty categories can be exempt.

A separate, more recent federal development concerns DOE general service lamp efficiency standards. DOE says the standards set efficiency levels that widely available LEDs can meet but CFLs cannot, and describes the market as already transitioning away from CFLs. The standards discussed in DOE’s announcement take effect for newly produced bulbs in July 2028. This is not a claim that every CFL disappeared on one date or that consumers are prohibited from using bulbs they already own.
Are CFL bulbs still sold, and can you keep using one?
The available evidence establishes that CFLs remain in use in some U.S. homes, but it does not establish current retail availability for every model or location. If you have an intact CFL, EPA says it does not release mercury while in use. You can continue using it unless the bulb or fixture is damaged or you have another reason to replace it.

- LONG LASTING PERFORMANCE: These LED bulbs offer a 10,000 hour lifespan, providing lasting illumination for over 9 years (based on 3 hours of use each day), helping minimize replacements
- GREAT ATMOSPHERE: Enjoy daylight white light bulbs that create a bright, crisp atmosphere for any room
- STANDARD FIT: The E26 standard base provides compatibility with most fixtures, making it easy to install these LED bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting
For a common household fixture, replace a burned-out CFL with a suitable LED. Check the bulb base and shape, compare brightness by lumens rather than watts alone, confirm dimmer compatibility where relevant, and select a color temperature you prefer. A bulb described as an A19 LED, 60-watt incandescent equivalent is a common replacement category, not a guarantee that a particular bulb fits every fixture.
What should you do if a CFL breaks?
CFL tubing contains a small amount of mercury sealed inside the glass. EPA gives an average of about four milligrams per CFL. A broken lamp can release mercury vapor and small beads, so follow EPA’s full cleanup directions rather than treating the fragments like ordinary glass. One of EPA’s first steps is to air out the room for 5–10 minutes.

How should you dispose of a burned-out CFL?
Use local or state disposal guidance for a spent, unbroken CFL; collection routes and waste rules differ by location. EPA’s CFL page, last updated January 29, 2026, links to recycling and disposal guidance as well as broken-bulb instructions. Do not assume that curbside recycling accepts CFLs.
