An unused wheelbarrow can become a distinctive outdoor feature—and a container planter is the most practical way to give it new life. Add drainage, choose plants for the spot’s light and watering needs, then arrange them in layers of height, fullness and trailing foliage. For extra impact, set the finished display on a stable stump or platform.
Choose a wheelbarrow and a place for it
Check the wheelbarrow’s material, shape and condition before choosing a use. A sound, intact barrow can become a planter; a barrow that is unsuitable for planting can still be styled as a non-plant display. Do not assume an old finish or unknown past contents are safe for growing edible plants. Virginia Tech Extension advises against using containers that held toxic substances in its vegetable container gardening guidance.
Think about the location before filling the barrow. Light, exposure and access to water should guide your plant choices. Leave room for drainage to run off without pooling or staining the surface below. An example from Mississippi State University Extension uses a dark green wheelbarrow on a recycled tree stump, showing how a simple support can turn a planter into a focal point.
Prepare the wheelbarrow for planting
Make drainage the first step
Drill drainage holes through the bottom of the wheelbarrow before adding soil. Excess water can collect in a container without an outlet and contribute to root rot. Drainage is also a core recommendation in Virginia Tech Extension’s container guidance and West Virginia University Extension’s container gardening advice.

Use a drill and a bit suited to the barrow’s material, and take appropriate precautions while drilling. If you cannot make drainage holes, use the wheelbarrow as a decorative display rather than treating it as a conventional planted container.
Decide whether to paint
Painting is optional. Mississippi State Extension’s wheelbarrow planter example notes that painting a metal barrow can help preserve it and personalize its appearance. Choose a coating appropriate to the wheelbarrow material and follow its label; the extension guidance does not compare specific paints.

Add potting mix
Use a suitable bagged potting mix rather than filling the barrow with garden soil. Mississippi State Extension recommends a good bagged potting soil mix and leaving the surface about an inch below the rim. The space helps keep the mix in place when watering and leaves room for the planting arrangement.
Build a layered planting
Arrange plants by their role in the composition: an upright “thriller” for height, fuller “fillers” through the middle, and “spillers” near the edges to trail over the lip. The wheelbarrow-specific planting guide gives hibiscus or papyrus as upright examples, coleus as a filler, and creeping Jenny, potato vine or verbena as spillers. These are examples, not a universal recipe.

- Filler: Use fuller plants to cover the soil and connect the upright plants with the edges.
- Spiller: Place trailing plants near the rim so their foliage can cascade over the sides.
For a cottage-style cascade, trailing foliage around the lip and bright flowers through the middle can soften the barrow’s shape. Mississippi State Extension illustrates creeping Jenny with Rio purslane; treat that pairing as one example and check that both plants suit your conditions before copying it.
Match plants to the site, not just the picture
Choose plants according to the light at the wheelbarrow’s location, your local climate and how often you can water. A plant that looks right in a photograph may not suit your exposure. The Extension example discusses creeping Jenny foliage in both sun and shade, but that does not make every plant in a mixed display equally adaptable. University of Maryland Extension also notes that container plants can differ in their watering needs in its container growing guidance.

If you want an edible display, herbs or compact vegetables are possible variations, but select crops only after checking the barrow’s capacity, the plants’ mature size and their exposure requirements. Virginia Tech Extension emphasizes adequate drainage and enough container space for plants at maturity; its advice is a useful starting point, not a crop-specific plan for every wheelbarrow.

Raise the planter carefully
A stump or platform can lift the plants into view from a path or patio. Mississippi State Extension shows a wheelbarrow set on a recycled stump. Before placing a soil-filled barrow on any raised support, check that the base is level, stable and suitable for the loaded weight.

Use color to connect it to the garden
A painted metal barrow can become a color-blocked focal point. One simple design approach is to repeat its chosen color in flowers or nearby containers, so the wheelbarrow feels connected to the rest of the space. This is a styling option rather than a planting requirement.
Plan for weight and upkeep
An empty wheelbarrow may be movable, but a planted one filled with potting mix can be heavy. If you expect to reposition it, choose its location before filling it. Container plantings also need attention to watering; group plants with compatible needs where possible and check the mix regularly rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
Quick Recap
A simple project checklist
- Inspect the wheelbarrow and choose a location based on light, runoff and access.
- If planting, drill drainage holes in the bottom and place the barrow where excess water can drain safely.
- Optionally paint the exterior with a product suited to the wheelbarrow material, following the label.
- Add bagged potting mix, stopping about an inch below the rim.
- Arrange suitable plants in upright, fuller and trailing layers.
- If raising the display, verify that the stump or platform is stable before setting the loaded barrow on it.
