The right number depends on the surface you are cleaning, the nozzle and distance you use, and the instructions for both the washer and the material. Consumer Reports’ guidance, updated June 9, 2026, gives task-specific ranges: 800 to 1,000 PSI for decks, 1,200 to 1,500 PSI for siding, and 1,500 to 3,000 PSI for concrete. Those ranges are a starting point for judging a machine, not a target to maximize.
Good PSI by task
Pressure rating is a measure of how hard the water hits the surface. Higher pressure can loosen stubborn grime faster, but it also raises the risk of etching wood, denting metal, or forcing water where it does not belong. The table below uses Consumer Reports’ ranges and the cautions that accompany them.
| Task or surface | Consumer Reports guidance | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Deck | 800–1,000 PSI | Check the decking maker’s and the washer’s instructions. Test an inconspicuous area first and start low, especially on softer wood, because pressure can raise grain or leave marks. |
| Siding | 1,200–1,500 PSI | The right setting depends on the material. Aluminum siding can dent. Keep the spray from being driven behind the siding or into seams and gaps. |
| Concrete | 1,500–3,000 PSI | The higher end can speed up cleaning on heavily soiled slabs, but nozzle choice and technique still control the result. |
| Roof | Do not pressure-wash | Consumer Reports describes pressure washing a roof as dangerous and potentially damaging. |
| Car | Consumer Reports advises against it | Consumer Reports points to a garden hose with a soapy sponge or a commercial car wash as safer options. |

Why PSI alone does not settle the purchase
A washer’s PSI tells you how hard the water strikes. It does not tell you how much water reaches the surface each minute, and that second number, gallons per minute (GPM), determines how quickly loosened dirt is rinsed away. SIMPSON Cleaning, a manufacturer, describes pressure as the scrubbing action and flow as the rinsing action. In its May 28, 2019 explainer, the company states: “When choosing a pressure washer, PSI and GPM are both equally important.”
#1 Best Overall
- Delivers 2500 max PSI and 1.76 max GPM (at lowest pressure), and 2000 rated PSI and 1.2 rated GPM of water flow; Pro-style steel extendable 17.5” wand with quick-connect nozzles (0°, 15°, 25°, turbo and soap applicator)
- Super compact and lightweight at 16.5” tall and 19 pounds for convenient storage and portability; Four quick-lock wheels with 360° steering design and low center of gravity engineered for anti-tipping design
- Easy-coil nylon braided 25' hose; 20 ounce onboard soap tank to add detergents/chemicals for heavy duty cleaning power on decks, driveways, garage floors, stairs, fencing, patio furniture and vehicles
- Pump automatically stops when trigger is not engaged to conserve energy and promote pump and motor life
- Backed by a 3-Year limited service, labor and parts coverage with nationwide customer service and support network
Many packages advertise a “cleaning units” figure, which multiplies PSI by GPM. That combined number is a rough marketing comparison. It does not tell you whether a machine suits a deck, a fence, or a driveway, so compare the PSI and GPM figures separately at the settings you will actually use.
How to compare two machines
- Match the PSI range to the heaviest surface you plan to clean, not the largest number on the box.
- Look for a GPM figure that gives reasonable rinsing on that job, especially on large flat areas such as driveways and decks where flow carries dirt away.
- Check the included nozzles. A machine with several spray tips gives you more control over the same PSI than one with a single fixed tip.
- Read the owner’s manual for the maximum pressure, recommended detergent use, and the nozzle and distance it specifies for each surface.
This article does not rank specific models or quote current prices. The guidance it draws on addresses task ranges and buying considerations, not a comparison of individual machines.
Rank #2
- HIGH PRESSURE WASHER: LWQ power washer with deep cleaning high pressure up to 2.5 GPM of water flow. It's saving water and energy, it also ensures high cleaning efficiency and the ability to clean objects with complex shapes and structures, which makes it ideal for cleaning various surfaces in your home, such as driveways, patio furniture, and cars.

The detergent bottle can be filled with chemicals such as bleach, the cleaner will not pass through the pump.
- CONVENIENT TO USE: LWQ Pressure Washer designs of 2 rollers for easy movement and operation, while the bottom of the body adds an anti-tipping design for overall stability when not in motion. Simple assembly + dual-roller design + anti-tipping base + faucet/bucket water collection system - making it more convenient to use anywhere.
- EASY TO STORAGE: With power cord hook and nozzle holders, it is easy to access or to store in a garage/pantry after use. In addition, its compact design for easy to store in a garage or pantry when not in use. The LWQ pressure washer is perfect for cleaning concrete, pavement, driveways, patios, decks, sidewalks, RVs, cars, boats, homes, fencing, and more.
- USER-FRIENDLY & SAFETY: The LWQ pressure washer using high-pressure water flow to clean up the dirt, for saving water and energy and ensuring high cleaning efficiency. Tip: Before turning on the pressure washer, exhaust the air in the high pressure hose as well as the inlet hose, this will ensure that the machine can spray high pressure water stream properly.
Nozzle, distance and technique
The nozzle often matters more than the rated pressure, because it sets how concentrated the stream is. A zero-degree nozzle focuses the entire flow into a narrow jet. Consumer Reports advises against using it, since the concentrated stream can injure people or damage surfaces. For vulnerable materials, use a wider spray pattern.
- Install the widest spray tip the job allows, and confirm the nozzle is securely attached before you pressurize the wand.
- Start at the low end of the surface’s recommended range. Step up only if the dirt does not come off.
- Keep the wand the distance the washer manual and surface maker specify. Moving closer raises the force on the surface quickly.
- Test an inconspicuous spot first, if the manufacturer permits it, and wait to see whether the finish or grain changes before cleaning the whole area.
- Work in consistent, overlapping passes instead of holding the wand in one place.
Surfaces to keep off
Consumer Reports warns that high pressure can damage paint, can nick or etch wood, and can harm some stone. Those warnings are general, so check the material before you use the machine on a painted or older surface. Roofs and cars are the two categories the guidance tells you to avoid with a pressure washer altogether. Its test engineer, Dave Trezza, puts it this way: “You might be inclined to pressure-wash just about everything around the house, but that’s not always a great idea.”

Safety gear
Consumer Reports advises wearing protective footwear, eye protection, gloves, and hearing protection when operating a pressure washer. A stream at high pressure can cut skin and drive debris, and the engine can be loud over long sessions.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated 6,057 emergency-room visits related to pressure-washer injuries in 2014, as reported by Consumer Reports in a March 8, 2016 safety article. That figure is older context rather than a current annual injury count, but it shows why nozzle choice and protective gear matter.

What the guidance does and does not cover
The ranges above come from a single consumer testing organization’s June 2026 guidance and a manufacturer’s explainer from 2019. Neither source offers a head-to-head test of every washer on the market. Pressure recommendations are guidance, so the washer manual, the surface maker’s instructions, the nozzle you choose, the distance you hold it, and the condition of the material should control the final setting.
Consumer Reports’ guidance is also aimed at U.S. consumers who use electric or gas washers for household cleaning. Commercial equipment, industrial coatings, and specialized surfaces fall outside this discussion.

Before purchase, consider the specific task you need to do. Whether the washer delivers the right result depends on the surface, and no PSI number answers that question alone.
