Soda-lime silica is common in architectural, automotive and container glass; borosilicate is typically used when greater temperature resistance is needed. For buildings, tempered and laminated glass are performance constructions—not competing glass recipes.
Start with what the glass needs to do
Glass choices are not one-dimensional rankings of “best” or “strongest.” The base composition, the way a product is processed or assembled, and the requirements of its application all matter. ASTM International describes soda-lime silica as the most common glass type, used in architectural, automotive and container applications. It says borosilicate is typically used where higher temperature resistance is needed, including cookware and laboratory ware. Read ASTM’s overview of glass standards and applications.
For a construction project, first identify the intended use and applicable specification. A window, door, partition or other architectural glazing may have safety and performance requirements that a kitchen glass comparison does not address.
Soda-lime silica and borosilicate: when each is used

These are broad application patterns, not a universal pass/fail rule. ASTM’s description does not make every borosilicate product appropriate for building glazing, nor does the prevalence of soda-lime silica mean it meets every project’s requirements.

For building glass, distinguish composition from construction
“Tempered” and “laminated” describe important architectural flat-glass products and performance requirements; they are not simply alternative chemical compositions in a ranking against borosilicate. ASTM’s standards overview identifies specifications for heat-strengthened and fully tempered flat glass, as well as laminated architectural flat glass. Which specification applies depends on the project and the glazing’s intended use. See ASTM’s glass and glazing standards catalog.
When reviewing a construction specification or product submittal, check the named glass product and the standard or performance requirement it must satisfy. Do not substitute advice about cookware, drinking glasses or generic “strongest glass” claims for a project-specific glazing requirement.

Kitchenware illustrates why labels are not enough
Even within consumer products, “glass” does not identify a single composition. Anchor Hocking says its U.S.-manufactured glass bakeware is tempered soda-lime-silicate. That manufacturer-specific example shows why a buyer should verify the exact product material rather than assume all glass bakeware is borosilicate. See Anchor Hocking’s bakeware information.
For cookware or bakeware, use the product’s stated temperature limits and handling directions, including instructions about temperature changes. Do not infer oven, stovetop or thermal-shock suitability from the word “borosilicate” alone.

Pharmaceutical glass has a different set of requirements
Medicine containers are assessed for pharmaceutical use, not chosen by borrowing kitchenware advice. United States Pharmacopeia describes borosilicate glass as Type I and soda-lime-silica glass as Types II or III, depending on treatment and classification, with hydrolytic resistance among the relevant considerations. These classifications concern pharmaceutical containers; they are not a consumer ranking for windows, dishes or cookware. Read USP General Chapter 〈660〉 (2023).

A practical way to make the choice
- Define the application. Identify whether the glass is for architectural glazing, cookware, storage, a container or another use.
- Check the governing requirement. For building work, consult the project specification and applicable glass or glazing standard; for a consumer product, consult its labeling and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Verify the actual product. Confirm its stated material and construction rather than inferring them from a broad label such as “glass,” “tempered” or “heat resistant.”
- Match performance to conditions. Consider the relevant demands—such as the architectural performance requirement or, for cookware, temperature and handling—without assuming one glass type answers every need.
