The best finish depends on what the window frame is made of. For paintable exterior wood, a compatible exterior primer followed by two coats of all-acrylic latex house paint is a well-supported default. For vinyl, fiberglass, Fibrex, aluminum cladding, or another factory-finished surface, don’t assume paint or stain is suitable: check the instructions and warranty for the exact window. If you’re replacing windows and want less exterior wood to refinish, compare aluminum-clad wood options.
Identify the frame material and existing finish first
Before choosing a coating, establish whether the frame is bare wood, previously painted wood, or a factory-finished component. Window units can combine materials, so the exterior frame, sash, trim, and cladding may not all accept the same finish. Follow the care instructions for the specific unit rather than treating the whole assembly as ordinary wood trim.
- Bare or previously painted exterior wood: a primer-and-paint system is a practical default when the surface is sound and the product is intended for exterior wood.
- Vinyl, fiberglass, Fibrex, or aluminum-clad parts: check the window maker’s instructions before painting or staining. Some factory-finished surfaces should not be refinished.
- Wood with an existing coating: identify whether the coating is sound or failing; new paint will not correct loose paint, failed caulk, or deteriorated wood.
For paintable exterior wood, use a compatible primer and paint system
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s residential durability guide recommends acrylic latex stain-blocking primer on untreated exterior wood trim, followed by two coats of all-acrylic latex house paint. This is a sourced recommendation for exterior wood trim, not a guarantee that the same products suit every window material or every existing coating. Check the coating label for surface preparation and application conditions.
Opaque latex stain can also be an option, particularly on rough wood. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s wood-finishing handbook cautions that solid-color stains generally are not recommended for flat wood surfaces such as window sills. Consider the wood’s texture, exposure, desired appearance, and upkeep before choosing stain instead of paint.

Paint versus stain on wood: what changes?
| Choice | Where the guidance supports it | Appearance and decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Primer and exterior paint | HUD recommends acrylic latex stain-blocking primer and two coats of all-acrylic latex house paint for untreated exterior wood trim. | An opaque finish; choose it when covering the wood grain is acceptable and the coating is compatible with the substrate. |
| Opaque latex stain | HUD describes it as an option, particularly for rough surfaces; USDA cautions against solid-color stain on flat surfaces such as window sills. | Consider the surface texture and exposure. The cited guidance does not establish a universal service-life or maintenance advantage over paint. |
Prepare the whole wood window, not just the visible peeling spot
When paint fails, the trouble may involve the surrounding coating and joints as well as the sill. Sherwin-Williams’ window-sill troubleshooting guidance recommends removing loose coating and old caulk, sanding to sound wood, priming with attention to end grain and the underside, then recaulking joints after priming.
- Remove loose or failing paint and old caulk; sand until the remaining wood and coating are sound.
- Apply a compatible primer, giving particular attention to exposed end grain and the underside of the sill.
- Recaulk the joints after priming, using a product suitable for the materials and location.
- Apply the finish coats according to the product label, including its weather and surface-condition requirements.
For application, BEHR’s exterior window-frame guide suggests a higher-sheen trim paint and lists a nylon/polyester brush and painter’s tape among its supplies. It also gives brand-specific advice about sunlight, temperature, and humidity. Treat those conditions as product guidance, not universal rules: use the current label for the coating you select.

Do not paint factory-finished vinyl, fiberglass, or cladding without approval
Andersen says its products use different materials and finishes and warns against finishing certain factory-finished surfaces, including fiberglass, Flexacron, vinyl cladding, Fibrex, and aluminum cladding. It also notes that applying a finish to those components can affect warranty coverage. These restrictions are specific to Andersen products; they do not establish the rules for every manufacturer. Consult the care instructions and warranty for your exact window before applying paint or stain.

Aluminum-clad wood has an exterior protective layer over the wood, which can reduce the need to refinish the exterior wood. Pella describes its own wood windows as having aluminum-clad exteriors and says its EnduraClad finish resists chalking and fading. Its clad-window explainer describes cladding as a way to reduce exterior maintenance. Those are claims about Pella’s offerings, not a universal performance guarantee for every clad window or finish.
