For a small nick in a finished woodworking project, use a color-matched wax or lacquer burn-in filler stick. Melt a little filler with a narrow blade, work it into the nick, let it cool for about a minute, then level it carefully. This method is intended for finished wood—not every surface or every kind of repair.

Choose a repair method for the surface and finish

First decide whether you are preserving the existing finish or preparing the piece for a new coat. Burn-in filler is suited to small nicks in finished wood when you can match the visible color. For a cabinet, follow guidance for its finish; for furniture that will be repainted, use wood filler before primer and paint.

Situation Repair approach Key consideration
Small nick in finished wood Wax or lacquer burn-in filler stick Match the surface or choose a slightly darker shade; control heat and level the patch carefully.
Small cosmetic nick in a cabinet Soft cabinet fill stick Remove excess gently; restore grain marks if needed and seal if desired.
Small painted scuff or scratch on a cabinet Finish-compatible touch-up pen or paint Apply lightly. Larger damage may need repainting or professional help.
Nick in furniture being repainted Wood filler, followed by primer and paint Smooth the repair as part of surface preparation.

These approaches are not interchangeable: a filler intended to blend into an existing finish may not be the right preparation for repainting.

How to fill a small nick with burn-in filler

Gather the materials

  • A wax or lacquer burn-in filler stick, matched to the finish or slightly darker
  • A narrow, thin-blade knife
  • An alcohol lamp for warming the blade
  • A cabinet scraper or razor blade for leveling
  • 220-grit sandpaper and compatible touch-up finish, if needed

Apply and level the filler

  1. Choose the shade. Test the color against the finished surface. WOOD Magazine notes that scrapings from two sticks can be mixed to create an intermediate shade.
  2. Warm the blade. Heat the knife over an alcohol lamp only enough to melt the filler. Avoid overheating the surrounding finish.
  3. Fill the nick promptly. Once the filler liquefies, place it into the nick and smooth it with the blade.
  4. Let it cool. Wait about one minute before leveling the repair.
  5. Level the patch. Carefully scrape the excess with a cabinet scraper or razor blade, taking care not to damage the surrounding finish.
  6. Finish only if needed. WOOD Magazine describes a quick pass with 220-grit paper and optional touch-up finish as follow-up steps.

WOOD Magazine Staff describes the technique as easy to learn and best suited to finished surfaces where the final color can be matched. Its guidance appears in an answer published March 17, 2021: WOOD Magazine’s instructions for filling nicks.

For cabinet nicks and painted marks

KraftMaid recommends soft fill sticks for cabinet nicks, gouges, nail holes, and small scratches. Gently remove excess filler with a plastic card or dry cloth, add grain marks if needed, and seal if desired. For small painted scuffs and scratches, it describes touch-up pens; larger damage may require repainting or professional help. See KraftMaid’s care and cleaning guidance.

If you plan to repaint the furniture

For a piece receiving a new coat of paint, treat the nick as a surface-preparation issue rather than a color-matching repair: apply wood filler with a putty knife, smooth the repair, then prime and paint. Sherwin-Williams illustrates this sequence in its dresser repainting instructions.
