Industrial washing systems are production-grade equipment and processes that remove soil, oil, residue or other contamination from items in commercial and manufacturing settings, to a defined cleanliness level and at a required throughput. The term covers several different jobs rather than one machine: cleaning metal and mechanical parts, washing linens and workwear for businesses, and washing crates, moulds, plates and racks in food production. A parts washer and an industrial laundry washer solve different problems, so the first question is always what is being cleaned and why.

Three applications that share one name

The phrase describes equipment built around an item and a soil, not a single standard category. The table below separates the three main applications.

Application Items cleaned Typical contaminants Common equipment
Industrial parts washing Machined, fabricated or assembled metal and mechanical parts Cutting oils, grease, machining fines, residues from processing Batch immersion tanks, spray cabinets, ultrasonic washers, filtration and reuse units
Industrial and on-premises laundry Linens, towels, uniforms and other textiles Soil, body oils, stains and laundry chemistry residues Multi-load washers, washer-extractors, tunnel washers in very large facilities
Food and confectionery washing Chocolate moulds, baking plates, crates, racks and trolleys Product residue and sugar, fat or process soils Crate washers, tunnel washers for moulds and plates, rack and trolley washers, drying modules

Across all three, a system typically combines a cleaning action, a rinse, and in many cases a drying stage. Depending on the operation, it may run in batches or continuously, recycle water or cleaning solution, and stand alone or sit inside a production line.

Industrial parts washing

Parts washers are the most varied group. Guidance from Nebraska’s parts-washer resources and from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) describes three aqueous cleaning methods as the core of most installations, with additional systems for managing the cleaning solution itself.

Immersion tanks

Immersion washers dip parts into a tank of cleaning solution. Agitation, heat or both are often added to speed removal of soil, and the method suits parts with complex shapes that need full coverage. Batch washers commonly use immersion tanks or spray cabinets.

Spray cabinets

Spray washers combine cleaning chemistry with physical spray action directed at the part. They are used where soil must be pushed off surfaces rather than dissolved, and they are a common choice for batch work. Spray systems do not reach internal cavities or blind passages as reliably as immersion, so part geometry matters when choosing between the two.

Ultrasonic cleaning

Ultrasonic washers use a transducer to create bubbles in the solution that expand and collapse, producing a scrubbing action at the part surface. The Wisconsin DNR guidance describes ultrasonic cleaning as effective for very small parts. For production volumes, ultrasonic units are one option among several, and a small benchtop unit is not a substitute for production-scale equipment.

Filtration and solution reuse

Filtration systems remove contaminants from the cleaning solution so it can be reused rather than replaced on every cycle. This reduces spent-solution volume and chemical purchases, but it does not remove the need to test and manage what leaves the system.

Bioremediation

Bioremediation washers use enzymes and microbes in an aqueous solution to break down oils and grease. They are a niche approach rather than a universal one, and they should be matched to the specific oils involved and the cleanliness target.

Solvent recovery and reuse

Solvent-based washers may be paired with distillation recovery or spent-solvent reuse systems, which recover solvent from the used liquid. These setups change the waste profile considerably, which is why solvent work carries the strictest handling and disposal obligations discussed later in this article.

Batch and continuous operation

Whatever the cleaning method, a parts washer runs in one of two modes, and the choice affects throughput and layout more than cleaning quality.

  • Batch systems clean a set of parts at a time. Wisconsin DNR guidance indicates batch handling is efficient for smaller quantities.
  • Continuous systems load parts steadily and move them through the washer, commonly on a conveyor. The same guidance indicates continuous handling is more efficient for larger quantities.

Neither mode is better in general. Volume, cycle-time requirements and the amount of automated handling in the surrounding process decide which one fits.

Industrial and on-premises laundry

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) distinguishes three kinds of laundry operations. Laundromats serve the public. On-premises laundries wash a facility’s own linens and textiles, as in hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and universities. Industrial laundries are typically centralized contract operations that wash items for other businesses. Industrial and on-premises laundries both rely on large machines, but the scale and the machine mix differ.

Multi-load washers and washer-extractors

Industrial and on-premises facilities commonly use large multi-load washers and washer-extractors. A washer-extractor washes and spins out water in one machine, and EPA notes that water recycling can be added to these machines as a way to reduce water use.

Tunnel washers

Very large on-premises laundries and large commercial or industrial laundries may use tunnel washers. A tunnel washer moves linen through a sequence of compartments, and it uses counter-flow water, beginning with the final rinse and reusing that water across wash stages. EPA describes tunnel washers as costly to install, but able to save more water than washer-extractors, with less operation and maintenance labor. The EPA’s WaterSense guidance of May 2023 gives the following figures. They describe guidance-level performance context, not guaranteed results for a particular machine or site.

Figure What EPA states Source and date
Throughput Up to 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of laundry per hour EPA WaterSense guidance, May 2023
Water-use reduction potential for tunnel washers 30 to 60 percent EPA WaterSense guidance, May 2023
Typical tunnel-washer water use 2 gallons (about 17 liters) or less per pound (per kg) of laundry EPA WaterSense guidance, May 2023

EPA advises considering tunnel washers for large commercial or industrial laundries that process large volumes, and notes that washer-extractors with water recycling are a second option. Efficient equipment, water recycling and ozone technologies all offer ways to cut water use, but the actual savings depend on the existing equipment and how it is used.

Food-processing and confectionery washing

Food-processing washing equipment is designed around specific items. Cretel, a manufacturer of confectionery washing and drying installations, describes systems for chocolate moulds, baking plates and moulds, crates, racks and trolleys. Its product descriptions say these installations can run as standalone machines or be built into high-capacity automated processing lines. The following categories are manufacturer descriptions, useful for showing what types of equipment exist, but not independent comparisons of performance.

Crate washers

Crate washers clean the transport crates used to move product through the plant.

Tunnel washers for moulds and plates

Tunnel-style washers handle moulds and baking plates as they pass through wash and rinse zones, usually as part of a continuous line.

Rack and trolley washers

Rack and trolley washers use rotating cages or moving spray systems to clean racks and trolleys. Items of this kind should not be assumed to clean equally well in every machine.

Drying modules

Drying modules follow the wash stage to remove water before items return to production. Hygiene and cleanability requirements apply at every stage, so drying should be specified with the wash, not after it.

Parts washers: a buyer’s checklist

Wisconsin DNR guidance gives a practical sequence for buyers of parts washers:

  • Record the part’s configuration, dimensions, grooves or cavities, material and susceptibility to damage.
  • Identify the contaminants, the required volume, the cycle-time constraint and the cleanliness standard.
  • Note what happens immediately after cleaning, such as coating, assembly or inspection.
  • Decide whether immersion, spray or ultrasonic action is needed, and whether heating, agitation, multiple stages, rinsing, drying, oil separation or automatic handling are required.
  • Confirm that the cleaning solution suits the washer and check whether contaminants will stay suspended or settle out.
  • Ask the supplier to run a test clean using the actual parts.
  • Check utility and energy needs, then confirm local wastewater, health, safety and environmental rules.

Laundry

Match machine type and capacity to the facility, the quantity and kind of textiles, and how often they are washed. Compare throughput, water and energy requirements, whether water recycling is available, installation needs, labor and maintenance. A washer-extractor line may suit a facility with moderate volumes, while tunnel washers become worth considering only when volumes are large enough to justify their installation cost.

Food processing

Specify the exact items, the hygiene and cleanability requirements, throughput, loading and unloading method, line integration, drying, water and chemical management, and access for maintenance. Equipment chosen for crates may not suit moulds or racks, so each item type should be tested against the candidate machine.

Wastewater, waste and safety

Discharge is where many washing systems carry the most regulatory weight. The guidance consulted for this article points to the following requirements, which vary by jurisdiction and process, so check current local rules before acting on any of them.

  • Test parts-washer waste to determine whether it exhibits hazardous-waste characteristics, keep the test records, and retest after relevant process or solvent changes.
  • Do not drain spent organic solvents to a sanitary sewer or septic system, and do not empty spent aqueous parts-washer wastewater into a septic system.
  • Check pretreatment requirements before discharging to a publicly owned treatment works.
  • Determine the wastewater treatment and permit requirements for the specific discharge, as Wisconsin DNR directs businesses to do.

Laundry and food-processing operations face their own discharge rules, so the same checks apply to any system that sends water or chemicals to a drain.
