The snowflake, star or sparkle symbol on a Samsung dishwasher is the rinse-aid indicator. When it lights up, rinse aid is low: refill the dispenser with liquid dishwasher rinse aid, following the instructions for your exact model.

What the snowflake indicator means

Samsung identifies a star, snowflake or sparkle icon as the rinse-aid indicator. When illuminated, it signals that the dishwasher needs more rinse aid; it is not, by itself, an error code. Icon designs can differ, so if the symbol does not match your model’s manual, check the manual’s icon guide. Samsung Canada’s dishwasher icon guide

How to refill the rinse-aid dispenser

  1. Find the reservoir. It is generally inside the dishwasher door, but its location and cap design vary. Use the instructions for your model. Samsung Australia’s indicator instructions
  2. Fill it with liquid rinse aid. Samsung’s US and Australian guidance specifies liquid rinse aid. Do not use powder: it can clog the reservoir opening. Avoid overfilling.
  3. Close the cap securely. Follow the manual’s refill steps and any guidance it gives for checking the level.

For example, Samsung’s US detergent and rinse-aid instructions explain that rinse aid helps dishes dry by reducing water’s surface tension, allowing water spots to evaporate. Exact dispenser details and instructions vary by model and market.

Why there is no universal rinse-aid setting

Some Samsung dishwashers use a dial, while others have electronic settings; available controls and ranges depend on the model. Do not apply a setting value or button sequence from another dishwasher. Check your model’s manual for its specific adjustment method. Samsung Canada’s rinse-aid setting guidance and Samsung Ireland’s refill-indicator instructions describe model-dependent controls.

If the indicator stays on after refilling

Samsung’s guidance does not establish one fix that applies across all models. Confirm that you refilled the correct reservoir as instructed in your model’s manual. If the dispenser is correctly filled and the light remains on, consult that manual or contact Samsung support for help with your model. Samsung also notes that product details and procedures vary by market; the Australian instructions apply to Australian products.
