Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is a large evergreen conifer native to the Pacific Coast and parts of the northern Rocky Mountains. It is recognizable by its short, flat needles of varying lengths and small, hanging cones. Its wood is used for construction lumber, pulp and paper, and interior finish work.

What is western hemlock?

Western hemlock, also called Pacific hemlock or west coast hemlock, is a member of the pine family, Pinaceae. Its scientific name is Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg. It is a forest tree as well as a commercially used timber species.

How to identify western hemlock

Look for a combination of foliage and cone traits rather than relying on one feature alone. The USDA NRCS plant guide describes a large evergreen tree, with needles typically 5–20 mm long and a guide-described height of 90–200 feet; these are reference ranges, not guaranteed dimensions for an individual tree. The guide’s publication year is not established in the retrieved source.

  • Needles: Short, flat, finely toothed, and attached by short stalks. Their lengths are unequal, giving the foliage a varied appearance.
  • Cones: Small, brown, and hanging, with thin, papery scales.
  • Overall form: A large evergreen tree; size varies with site and growing conditions.

These traits can help distinguish western hemlock in the field, but a reliable identification should consider the whole tree and its setting.

Where western hemlock grows

Western hemlock grows in humid forests along the Pacific Coast, from California north to Alaska, and inland through parts of the Cascades and northern Rocky Mountains. The US Forest Service’s 1990 Silvics account describes a coastal range of 3,200 km (2,000 mi), from central California to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. The FEIS account places the southern coastal endpoint in Sonoma County, California, reflecting a difference in how the sources describe the range boundary.

Inland, the species occurs along the western and upper eastern Cascades, and west of the Continental Divide in parts of Montana and Idaho, extending north into British Columbia. The US Forest Service reports an elevational range from sea level to 2,130 m (7,000 ft), varying by latitude and mountain range.

Forest habitat and ecological role

Western hemlock is associated with moist environments and appears in a variety of forest communities. Depending on the location and site, it may establish on disturbed ground or regenerate beneath forest cover; it commonly becomes a dominant, late-successional species in suitable forests. It is not limited to old-growth stands, nor is it invariably the dominant tree.

Western hemlock forests provide cover and habitat for wildlife. The species is associated with use by cavity-nesting birds, and deer and elk browse it. The USDA guide also identifies western hemlock for use in riparian buffers.

What is western hemlock wood used for?

Western hemlock wood serves as a versatile commercial material. The US Forest Service lists construction lumber, poles, railway ties, and several grades of pulp among its uses. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory also identifies roof decking, laminating stock, moldings, and architectural trim.

For a construction project, the species name alone does not determine whether a board is suitable. Compare the lumber’s grade, drying, dimensions, and intended application. The cited sources document broad uses and wood characteristics, but do not establish current retail prices or performance specifications for a particular board.

Planting western hemlock

Western hemlock is used in restoration planting and as an ornamental. For a planting project, confirm that the species is suitable for the site and that seed or seedlings have appropriate native provenance. A general description of the species does not establish local planting suitability or the availability and reliability of a particular supplier.
