An induction motor can power both agitation and spin, but the washer uses those phases for different jobs: agitation moves laundry to wash it, while spin turns the basket or drum faster to remove water. How the motor’s motion reaches the wash mechanism depends on the washer’s design, so there is no single drive sequence that applies to every model.
What agitation and spin do
| Phase | Purpose | Typical motion |
|---|---|---|
| Agitation or wash | Moves laundry through water and detergent to loosen soil. | A top-load agitator may twist back and forth; an impeller may rotate to move clothes against one another; a front-load washer tumbles laundry. Motion varies by design and cycle. |
| Spin | Removes much of the water left in laundry after washing and draining. | The basket or drum turns faster to extract water. The speed profile varies by washer and selected cycle. |
These are distinct operating phases, not necessarily two separate motors. In some washers, one motor and its controls provide different motions; in others, the drive arrangement differs.
How an induction motor can switch between the phases
In a documented GE washer design, a three-phase induction motor is controlled by an inverter. A belt connects the motor to a shaft and mode-shifter assembly. The motor can reverse direction to produce agitation, while the mode shifter changes which part of the drive is engaged for agitation or spin. The description applies to specific GE designs, not every induction-motor washer (GE service literature).
For the documented GE WCRE6270K family, the service description says the mode-shifter coil is energized at the start of agitation, moving a cam so the agitator shaft is driven. During spin, the coil is not energized and a spring-loaded cam engages the drive pulley. Transitions in that design can include metal-to-metal clunks described as normal in its service guide; that does not establish that a clunk is normal on other washers (GE service literature).

Motor control may change direction without a full stop between agitation strokes. Texas Instruments’ September 2014 Washing Machine Control Reference Design User’s Guide explains that its example changes the speed reference from positive to negative repeatedly during closed-loop agitation control. That is an explanation of the reference design, not a universal description of washer controls (Texas Instruments reference design guide).
Does the tub move during agitation?
Not always in the same way. Some washers primarily move an agitator or impeller while the basket remains comparatively still; other designs include tub motion during washing. LG says certain direct-drive top-load models spin the tub during wash and rinse motions, with movement varying by course and option (LG support guidance). Avoid treating “agitation” as proof that the tub never rotates.

Why agitation and spin speeds vary
Agitation must move clothes through the wash action; spin must extract water. Neither phase has one fixed speed that describes every washer. GE Appliances says variable-speed motor speed can adjust through a cycle according to the selected cycle, load size, and torque resistance from the load (GE Appliances guidance on variable-speed motors). A washer’s exact manual is the authority for its motions and cycle behavior.
What motor sounds can—and cannot—tell you
Whirlpool’s guidance for the washer types it covers describes intermittent motor humming or whirring during agitation, a motor winding up during spin, and separate pump humming during draining (Whirlpool washer-noise guidance). Sound alone does not identify a failed induction motor: the phase, the washer’s design, and its manual all matter.

- Note whether the sound occurs during wash/agitation, draining, or spin.
- Compare it with the sound descriptions in the manual for the exact model.
- If the sound is new, unusually loud, or accompanied by a change in operation, use the model-specific troubleshooting guidance or seek qualified service rather than diagnosing the motor from sound alone.
What to check before replacing a motor
An induction motor is only one part of a washer’s drive system. A symptom during agitation or spin may involve the motor, its controller, the transmission or drive arrangement, or another component; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal fault signature. If repair is being considered, identify the full washer model and confirm the exact part number and compatibility before ordering a replacement assembly.
