Some hums, buzzes, gurgles, pops, and ice-maker sounds are normal, but a very loud, persistent, or disruptive noise deserves attention. Identify when it happens, try only safe basic checks, and contact Samsung support or a qualified appliance technician if it sounds unusually loud, stops when a door opens, or comes with cooling trouble.
What Samsung refrigerator noises can be normal?
Samsung says a refrigerator is never completely quiet: compressor hum or buzz, refrigerant gurgling, water dripping onto the defrost heater, plastic expanding and contracting, and ice-maker operation can all make noise. The sound’s volume and timing help distinguish routine operation from a problem. See Samsung’s noise guide for model-specific guidance.
Identify the noise and what is happening

Safe checks to try first
- Note the timing. Listen for whether the noise occurs during compressor operation, ice making or dispensing, defrost, or when a door opens. For an intermittent sound, record a short sample to help support staff understand the issue.
- Check for contact and leveling. For a rattle, look for objects touching the appliance and move it forward about an inch to see whether the sound changes. Check that it is level. Do not strain water lines or electrical connections while moving it.
- Check the ice maker and water supply. If buzzing seems to come from the ice maker and no water line is connected, switch the ice maker off. When a line is connected, Samsung US says water-fill noise may be louder if pressure is too high. Its guidance describes a flow check: dispensing three-quarters of a cup in under ten seconds. Follow your model manual; do not adjust plumbing beyond your competence.
- Escalate loud or concerning symptoms. Contact Samsung support or a qualified technician if the sound stops when a door opens, is very loud or continuous, or accompanies cooling trouble. A sound alone does not establish that a fan, compressor, or ice-maker component needs replacement.
Why a fan noise that stops at the door needs attention
If fan-like noise stops when a refrigerator door opens, ice or another obstruction around a fan may be involved. Samsung recommends service for a fan-on-ice problem; a manual defrost may only stop the noise temporarily, leaving its underlying cause unresolved.
Samsung describes manual defrost as an option, but recommends service. If you choose to follow its procedure, unplug the refrigerator, remove perishables, leave the doors open, use towels, and allow up to 24 hours. Cooling will be interrupted, so protect food and follow current model-specific Samsung guidance. Never use a hair dryer or another heat source; Samsung warns that doing so can damage the refrigerator.

When to request service
- The noise is so loud that it interrupts conversation, or it remains loud and persistent.
- Grinding happens when you are not dispensing ice.
- A consistent loud thump is unrelated to ice dropping.
- Fan noise stops when you open a door.
- The noise comes with a cooling problem.
Use local Samsung support or a qualified appliance technician.
