To get water from a Samsung refrigerator, make sure the dispenser is unlocked, select Water, and press the correct lever or control for your model. If water does not flow—or the stream is weak—check the water supply line, filter, and trapped air in that order. Controls and procedures vary by model, so use your refrigerator’s manual for model-specific instructions.
How to dispense water
- Unlock the controls. If Control Lock is on, turn it off using the control panel instructions in your model’s manual.
- Select Water. Some refrigerators have separate ice and water controls; confirm Water is selected.
- Use the correct dispenser control. Press the lever or button as directed for your model. On some models, an external dispenser will not work while the refrigerator door is open. Samsung Canada notes that its guidance applies to refrigerators sold in Canada and that settings may differ in other markets; check your local model’s manual. If your Samsung refrigerator is not dispensing water
Check the water supply line
Confirm that the line is connected, the supply valve is open, and the line is not kinked or pinched. If the refrigerator doors were recently removed, the water-line coupling may not have been reconnected correctly; check the manual for its location and connection instructions. Samsung recommends having the water line installed by a professional. Samsung Canada’s troubleshooting guidance
Check for a restricted filter
Samsung US gives different advice depending on when the refrigerator was manufactured. For models made during or before 2024, its troubleshooting page says to remove the filter and try dispensing; if flow returns, replace the filter. For models made during or after 2025, the page directs users to check the line, valve, and door coupling instead—not to use the filter-removal test. This year-based advice is specific to Samsung’s US guidance; consult the manual for your model and market. Samsung US refrigerator water-dispenser troubleshooting
Purge air after a filter change or line connection
Air introduced during recent work on the water system can cause sputtering or interrupted flow. Samsung Canada advises holding the dispenser lever and attempting to dispense for five minutes after a filter replacement or water-line connection. If water begins flowing, continue until the stream is steady and sputtering stops. The process can take up to two to three gallons; follow your model’s manual if its instructions differ. If the water flow is weaker than normal
Check that the supply line is open and unobstructed, then consider whether the filter may be restricting flow. Use the model-year distinction in Samsung’s US guidance before attempting a filter-removal check. Samsung Australia lists a general operating pressure range of 206–861 kPa (30–125 psi), but the page does not state a publication year and notes that refrigerator designs vary. Treat that as general guidance, not a specification for every model; the manual is the authority for your refrigerator. Samsung Australia dispenser troubleshooting
Choose and replace the right water filter
Filter location, cartridge type, and replacement steps differ across Samsung refrigerators. Find the refrigerator’s model number or read the identifier on the installed cartridge before buying a replacement. Samsung Canada’s guide covers HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 cartridges; do not assume one fits every Samsung refrigerator. Confirm compatibility in the model manual or Samsung’s support information. Replacement procedure depends on cartridge type
For HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN, Samsung Canada’s instructions say to shut off the water supply, dispense water until flow stops to relieve pressure, unlock and remove the old filter, install the replacement, reset the filter indicator as directed for the model, and flush the system. For HAFCU1, the guide describes a separate installation procedure. Its guidance for these procedures is to flush for about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses. These are cartridge-specific directions, not universal steps; use the instructions for your refrigerator and filter.
Understand the replacement indicator
Samsung UK recommends replacing a water filter every six months. Samsung Canada describes the indicator as a timer guideline and notes that water quality and dispenser use can affect when replacement is needed. Treat six months as general maintenance guidance, not a guarantee that every filter needs replacement at exactly that interval. Samsung UK guidance on refrigerator maintenance

When to call for help
If unlocking the controls, checking the supply, and following the applicable filter and air-purge guidance do not restore flow, consult the refrigerator’s manual or contact a qualified installer or service provider. A disconnected or damaged line and a coupling that needs repair are reasons to get professional help rather than force a connection.
